Necromancy Threads...why close them? New players want to know things!

grimoaldus1701grimoaldus1701 Member Posts: 79 Arc User
Hi all,
I was wondering why people are opposed to threads that are old? I guess some people call them necromancy threads. Why are they closed? If the people that are involved are happy talking about it, why not let them continue? Maybe a new player would like to talk about it and you as a veteran player don't. So just don't chime in and leave it alone. Older players can ignore the revived thread. There are certain players that call it out so fast. Why? It's not hurting you in any way. It's not like this forum has tons of new stuff to discuss. Why close them? I'm on the Reddit forum, but things really should be asked here instead of there, especially for new players that know nothing about some of the STO topics. After all we do want to be a welcoming community right? And be the official forum. Right? As always thank you and live long and may the game prosper.

Answer off the top of my head: the replies to the thread may have out of date answers and give someone bad info that they act on. If a thread is old and you have the same question, just post a new thread and make sure you are getting current answers.

I appreciate the heart felt information. I do want it to be a welcoming community. I appreciate the truth and factual information about the "rules" here. I enjoy the game and Star Trek. And I want to spread my enjoyment to others. Thank you both for answering with your truth. Anyone else?

Thank you both for answering with your truth.

Just to be clear, what I said in my previous reply is not "my truth" (aka "my opinion"). It is literally a fact that old threads will have old replies with outdated info answers. That is not an opinion, it is a fact.

I just wanted to make sure you understand the difference between the phrase "your truth" and something that is actually a fact :)

Yes, I appreciate the facts and factual, current information as I stated. Thank you. But we should always make time to hear others out and their truth, their feelings. It's sad that censoring happened just as it did in this thread. Live long and may the game prosper. I love this game.

An example of outdated information is how Beam Overload functions. Years ago it was a single shot off whichever beam array fired first. Now its a duration effect on all beam arrays. Someone could look up the Beam Overload threads, see that they're supposed to be single shot guaranteed crit, and wonder what happened since that's not how they behave now.

It keeps the forums from being overrun by way old posts

In some cases though, it's a bit pointless to close a thread.

There have been ones from a couple of months old where nothing hadn't changed that much. In such cases it is a bit silly to close a still fairly recently created thread and expect people to create another one on the exact same thing.

I understand the mods have to follow the rules - but those rules were created for a certain purpose (whatever that may be, I doubt the person who actually came up with it, is still here). And in some cases, that purpose means it makes more sense to keep a thread open. Instead of just closing it because the rules demand it...

    Example:

    https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/startrekonline#/discussion/1239692/where-are-all-the-ground-patrols

The original question was never answered - as noted by the necromancer - and the situation hasn't changed much. And that one is rather old, there have been threads that were just over two months old.

The big problem with this is new posters. A lot of new posters don't have permission to start threads (not sure why) and so if they have a specific question, they search for a thread on that topic and post in it. Then they get the thread locked for necromancy.

The policy really makes it difficult for new users to ask a question. That's something that should be looked into. I noticed some new members can post threads, others can't.. not sure what's up with that.

I agree with you on that, but you'd be surprised how many people out there try and twist things to favor their views.

It has to do with metrics. The higher the number of Forum Threads, the better for meeting the metric. ;)

When I was young only "alternative facts" that weren't lies were things that open to interpretation and thus there was no single objective fact, for objective fact there was just the facts, no "my facts" 1+1=2 no matter who you ask and if someone claimed otherwise the universe quickly corrected them as physics don't care about your feelings.

    2 + 2 = 5, for moderately large values of 2. . . o:)

But yeah. Subjective "truth" is a serious problem these days.
