Really confused by what a 2013 forum post here, and the wiki, are saying regarding this with regards to the relationship between the two and how to work it out
If you use the formula (perception- stealth)/50 = distance you can see the ship, that doesn't make any sense half the time
If a standard unskilled cruiser has perception of 5010 (5000×(1+(20/10,000) and an escort has stealth of 5100
(5010-5100) ÷ 50 = -1.8km
Unskilled science vessel?
(5030-5100)÷50 = -1.4km
How's it make any sense at all? How on earth are people using that calculation to get +12 etc? Or any positive numbers
Have they just failed to understand maths or have they failed to write the full formula?
And where's the auxiliary power level come in? I get that it does, but where? One post says you add aux power to stealth. Therefore 125 aux is 5125 stealth. Surely high stealth versus low perception means that i can get up close, how on earth is it so bad? High perception should mean i can see them miles off
Really appreciate clarification as to an answer

This will also increase your ships perception range to 3km 5km.

This will also increase you perception (Stealth Detection)
Intel Spec has Perception Bending
Your stealth and perception values are directly increased by your current Auxiliary Power level.
Each point of Auxiliary Power adds to Stealth and Perception.
Currently: +__ Stealth while Cloaked
Currently: +__ Perception

I want to know how do i work out how close i can get to ship npc A or B without detection
You can sit right on top of them with regular cloaks..Battle Cloaks...and Enhanced Battle cloaks...
Haven't tested with Mask E-signature or the Competitive 2 piece.

Its 5000x(1+(sdr/10,000)) that's the perception according to. .. a dev In the forum in 2013?
Once did some in-game testing for foundry project (essentially I wanted the players to just barely indentify the ship before it warped out) and indentification range for an NPC was ~16 km with the targeting range set at 10 km and IIRC the detection range was 20 km or 25 km aka at that range you could say something was there even if couldn't say what.
that was with 100% unbuffed starter cruiser and a standard NPC group (federation one so no cloaks).
Um..They reworked a TRIBBLE ton of stuff in season 11 (2015)..
I would trust no formula from 2013..
If your target is NPCs..It really doesn't matter..Just about anything you can use ..including Mask energy signature will pretty much hide you.. Im flying around in kerrat with MES1 at full impulse and dont worry about any Borg seeing me.

Indeed the important thing to remember is that preception and stealth buffs matter only in PvP, as far as PvE is conserned NPCs have 0 buffs to their preceptions and unless the mission itself gimps your use of stealth by revealing you when you do anything more complext then moving the NPCs won't detect you at all, unless you choose to reveal yourself.
I'm not asking for opinions on whether a thing is good or bad, i just wanna know the mechanic better so i can plan builds
