Do you need a T6 ?

I played a year back and there was some kind of xp bonus going on that lasted forever , so I got to level 50 quickly... .... and then I couldn't play. Everything trounced my T4 ships and there wasn't much I could do about it. So I"m wondering, do you have to buy T6 ships to get past that hump ? Am I just a terrible player…
