PSA: Klingons and "New Mechanics" for "The Renegade's Regret"

where2r1where2r1 Member Posts: 6,054 Arc User
This is very exciting getting something new to STO....finally....even if it is a copy from Champions.

Just want to send a warning to players....especially those who will be playing this mission with KDF characters....to walk on the side of caution.

Reminder: When "Sphere of Influence" first came out... it bugged out a lot of people's costume slots, especially on KDF toons. Work around: switch your character's "costumes" to the default uniform in costume slot #1, before adventuring out as Neth Parr.

As an EXTRA precaution, may I suggest making a written note of Traits you have slotted on your Captains (unless you have those icons memorized and a screen shot is OK), take a screen shot of the BOFF seating on your ship (I assume you have those BOFF ability icons memorized, otherwise write those down, too).

And take a screen shot of the ship status/configuration page. Only because there are still posts where people are having problems with that load out system and gear being unslotted.

I know my Armada Leader got downvoted on reddit for posting something similar...to me, better being safe, than sorry.

I, too, am wary of any new code that automatically changes your costume, ship, equipment, or power trays. I'm going to wait a few days before playing the new mission to see if any bugs turn up.

I started looking into the "Sphere of Influence" costume bug and fell down a rabbit hole: Investigating it turned out to be a lot more work than I anticipated. I discovered that the bug is actually older than "Sphere of Influence"; it just became a lot more prevalent with that mission. It's at least as old as Legacy of Romulus and maybe even older than that. And some people were still having issues even after the bug was supposedly fixed. Here are the threads I've found so far:

    2013-05-02: KDF Tailor/Costume Slots
2013-05-23: Bug: Romulan additional outfit slots locking and becoming unusable
    2013-05-23: Klingon Uniform Slot Bug
2013-05-29: Costume Slot Bug Out of Control
2013-06-16: Can't change costume on Klingon
    2013-08-13: Kingon Costume crash
2013-06-21: Costume Bug Still Not Fixed
2013-10-30: New KDF Bug with Costumes *team is investigating*
2013-11-04: Sphere of Influence costume bug
    2013-11-20: Outfits bugged
2013-12-10: Various tailor bugs on my Klingon since Winterland started
2013-12-26: KDF tailor: utterly broken now!
    2014-01-03: KDF Costume Issue
2014-02-02: Clothing bug with Kingon Char.
2014-03-06: Kdf tailor still broken *Mar 1th team investigating, see post #58*
2014-03-22: KDF costume bug not fixed (although march 6th patch said it was)
2014-03-28: Things stated as fixed are not...
    2014-04-24: Kdf Costumes "still" Broken
2014-06-06: Bought 2 costume slots, only recieved 1. Accidentally fixed KDF costume slot lock?
    2014-06-12: Invalid Costumes
    2015-09-28: Bugged/Broken Costumes Slots since 2013

I suspect an investigation into "loadout" bug will turn up a similar list.

I asked my Fleet Leader: What is Champions Online's Onslaught mechanics?

He responded: "I" should download Champions Online and play it myself. I refused. Uh...politely. I hope???

SO...... I looked up "Champions Online" "Onslaught mechanics"

Found these articles that were helpful:

    https://www.mmorpg.com/champions-online/interviews/get-ready-to-unleash-your-inner-villain-1000010007

https://create.piktochart.com/output/7991688-champions-online-supervillain-onslaught <-- I had to open this one in Firefox.

It does not SOUND like it works in STO mission, at all.

In Champions you activate a "device" BEFORE you enter the Onslaught as a Super Villain, which basically is a pre-set character. It is NOT like changing into the Super Villain right in the middle of a mission.

Read the articles....what do you think, @frtoaster ???

We can not BE IN a mission clicking a console because that defeats the mechanic...because we would be in the mission as our character clicking on a console. We would have to interact with "something" that sits in for a device (in Champions) that allows them to "pick the Super Villain character" to turn into.

It has to be something Star-Trekky, though.... Holodeck? Maybe?

This sounds like it could be used to create pre-set ships for PvP....I wonder if they are looking into that, too?

OH... BTW.... the "Champions Onslaught mechanics" is the "new mechanics" the Devs are porting over to STO to get this Neth Parr mission to work. Though I am not sure HOW it will be implemented.

I believe Borticus mentioned this on Reddit.
"I should clarify -- "completely new" to STO. The tech in question is an evolution of what Champions uses for some of its Onslaught mechanics"

How the user activates it is probably much less important than what happens in the back-end. I'm more worried about bugs in the underlying code than what the user clicks on to start it. Anyway, I guess we'll see when the mission comes out.

It won't matter if I download Champions or not. We will never be able to tell "what happens in the back end", nor, more importantly, HOW they "evolved" it for STO.

I have not been on STO at all, yet...I am not even sure if maintenance is done. I rarely sign on the day new stuff gets added to the game. Plus I want to sit back and read what people have to say in the Forums, first. LOL!

P.S. The way the user ACTIVATES it is extremely important.

The player character with all the settings needs to be left behind to take on the separate "Super Villain"/Neth Parr character in the "Onslaught"/mission. I read somewhere that one has to go to DS9 and talk to Neth Parr. So....that takes care of that "unlock with tokens" thing.

it's up, I ran though it on my AoY fed since at this point I don't care what happens to him, I got the main thing I care about.

a few traits were unsloted but that could be from season 13 or really anything. I don't log into this character much.

Thanks Nightken....that was fast. Responded while I was living dangerously and editing my post. LOL!

Wow, an AOY character without problems with this mission? That is a plus point.

I am going to assume: no one has tried switching costumes, yet.

But I am seeing far too many weird things going on here today. And on STO Reddit.
So, I am going to wait until Thursday to bother downloading anything.

I don't know. I am not playing it until next patch. LOL!

Only thing I SEE complaint wise so far:

Ground and Space trays are missing abilities.

Some people's STO program is crashing when they enter the mission...but that may be associated to another problem with the STO program crashing on map changes.

OF all things hellish or holy.... this Renegade's Reret mission is REALLY BAD!! LOL!
They DO NOT have this set up right. In all sorts of ways.

I am NOT seeing the crashes reported yesterday.

Ground tray is OK after the mission.....

BUT the Space Tray is screwed up in strange ways. Wrong rows were up? Some BOFF abilities were gone, others were there, but in the wrong places. Like Torpedo High Yield was off the tray. I can not figure out what all was going on with it.....

I just ended up starting from top of the list and going straight down the list to make sure it was all there.

Thank Goodness I played this game on a character I don't care about and doesn't have the full spread of special consoles, etc.... Because I would be HOT if I had to redo all that.

After reading about this, I decided to play the mission. As soon as the mission was over, I looked at my Space tray. It was no longer set up the way I liked and had worked out. I clicked on the button under Loadouts which I labelled as "DiscDisruptorPrime". My Space Tray, Traits and other things which are part of this Loadout immediately reappeared. They were set just exactly the way I had them set up prior to playing the mission.

I do not comprehend all of the fuss and bother over this issue.

Oh, it is simply because: not everyone uses Loadouts.

If Loadouts work is not the point. If this system works correctly, and it does not, players characters shouldn't be touched.

In other words, players should not have to make up for failure of Cryptic's mission mechanics by using a second system to correct it.

If the program was working properly, players should not have to activate "Work Arounds" to fix anything.

Especially, because they introduced the "Onslaught" mechanics to STO for the express purpose of alleviating the problem of trays, traits, loadouts...etc. But it did not.

I read that on Reddit...Borticus used that exact term: alleviating the issues. That was as a direct response to a Reddit Poster worried about the trays.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/87t3a4/new_featured_episode_the_renegades_regret/dwfekp9/

Has this mess ported itself over to the other missions where players switch ships, now?? Don't quote me on this. I just read this in an e-mail I have yet to go verify this in the Bug Forums. But may not have time to tonight...

@frtoaster DON'T fall down a rabbit hole, again!!! I will get to it sometime tomorrow. LOL!

I am just getting around to patching the game from this morning and I have more writing to get to.
I may blow off STO tonight all together....darn it, I want to visit Bozeman, MT. Still have not been there.

All I can tell you about the costumes: no one is making complaints in the Forums about glitchy costumes after the Neth Parr mission....that I have seen. Though some folks are having strange things going on with stances like "Twitchy".

Edit: most folks use Fed characters and not sure they use anything but Uniform 1 slot.

Anyone on the KDF side switch to a different costume slot (not a costume in Uniform 1 slot) and come out unscathed after the Neth Parr mission???

    ++++++++++++++

I am just bringing up the game for the first time today. I have a few more testing scenarios I have outlined in my brain that I am going to be trying with this Neth Parr mission...including using my WW costume instead of Uniform 1.

I am sorry, I don't play this game constantly...and I have other objectives in the game I want to do, too. I mean, I love DOFFing so it will be done today. I still have not seen that Bozeman, MT map.... I would like to visit it before it is gone this year. Totally missed it last year.

I will try to get back tonight with some update on testing I am doing here...but it may be over the weekend.

ONE thing I did notice: my ground tray did not change. BUT I believe it is because I use Rows 1-2-3 for ground and I believe that is what the STO program sees as default and it tries to set things back into those rows.

Space tray is a big yikes since I use Rows 2-3-4-5 as I don't need to look at Row 1. <-- that is another test I am going to try...shifting the visible Rows to 1-2-3-4-5 before going into the mission, see if it fixes it.

I know I am probably losing some people with this tray stuff....
I am going to go in the Neth Parr mission set up like this at start:

Makhai is going to be wearing the Winter Wonderland costume....not default Uniform 1.

With this tray set up on ground...only thing on Row 1 is the weapon attack and melee...Row 2-3-4 in sight (on HUD):

    vnm9TWy.jpg

Space tray is going to be similar with weapons on Row 1....Row 2-3-4 with Row 5 vertical in sight (on HUD):

    if3JuML.jpg

I am doing this to force STO program to change my trays....or at least, that is what I think is going to happen. I am also looking to see what "powers" will disappear when I come back to my character.

Makhai is in his Tier 5 Hegh'ta BoP...so not a lot of consoles slots, not a lot of BOFF seats...
He has Commando Specialization filled out...but that is it. No Rep.

Only has basic traits...but those are filled up, only because I want to see if anything gets lost.

Ground: Acute Senses, Aggressive, Creative, Peak Health, Sturdy, Sure Footed, Telekinesis, Field Technician, Pistol Training.

Space: Accurate, Efficient Captain, Elusive, Techie, Bulkhead Technician, Cannon Training, Impact Defense Specialist, Operative, Projectile Training.

    Ok...I turned into Neth Parr....

You can see, right off the bat I am already having issues with the space tray....
The program sees my HUD set up as being on Row 2-3-4....
BUT the mission's HUD defaults to set up on Row 1-2-3.
I do not see most of Neth Parr's ship abilities.

Row 5 vertical tray is empty. But still shows up on my screen...
that is the way the program reads my HUD set up.

The other thing... Hegh'ta has four forward weapons... Shuk-din Escort (T-6) has five.
The ability tray is being over lapped by the weapons tray...not alot, at least not on my set up.
Who knows what other people have.

    lNm6Rvx.jpg

Corrected so I can run this mission:

    3uc8VJ5.jpg

So, this will mess up my tray and HUD when I get back to my normal character.

Looking at ship stats: All of Makhai's gear is still intact...but the BoP picture is replaced by the picture of the ship is of the Shuk-din. Obviously, the ship is NOT using the gear Makhai has on his ship...because it is all disruptor cannons and a couple of torps....that is not the weapon type that Shuk-din uses during the battles. And it has a mix of beams and cannons.

All my BOFFs are in their regular ship stations...but none of their abilities are in Neth Parr's space tray.
All of Makhai's traits are gone in the selection boxes...but the check marks are still marked off the traits listing properly.

Obviously, the program is using whatever is being specified by the mission...can not see it other than what is observed while playing.

Edit: also note that Shuk-din is a Pilot ship and is using Lock Trajectory 3...where as Makhai Boffs does not have any specialty training at all.

Mission over....back in the universe as Makhai....

Space Tray AFTER: (oops sorry, was in Sector space)
    zgHID1y.jpg

    Space Tray BEFORE:
    if3JuML.jpg

Just like the first time I ran the mission...just weird oddball changes. I did not feel like analyzing it the last time...but I took a closer look this time.

Row 1: Do not know why the dual cannon has moved over from slot 1 to slot 9 after the mission. Weird.
Row 2: There are 2 Experimental Weapons firing buttons, one of the Rapid Fire 1 is missing.

Last time, I was missing the High Yield Torpedo button, and one of the Rapid Fire 1, I think.

Of course, alignment is off on the weapons interface there.
Of course, I had to fix Rows, again...from 1-2-3 to 2-3-4.

    ++++++++++++++++

After the change from Neth Parr character back into Makhai, while I was still inside the mission, I took a picture of the Ground Tray...

    Ground Tray AFTER:
    JxcsuaI.jpg

    Ground Tray BEFORE:
    vnm9TWy.jpg

This is just the program getting confused in a weird way. But I was expecting this....that is why I scrambled the rows in the first place. The program is confused because my character was using was not Rows 1-2-3.

Scrolling everything to the rows I started with...fixes it. Nothing is missing here.

Ground Tray on DS9 with Rows corrected:
    8AauyN6.jpg

AS FOR THE COSTUMES: NO PROBLEMS switching from his WW Outfit back into Uniform after the mission. Both in the Tailor and with the quick switch on the picture. He only has the two outfits.

TRAITS: No problems with those. Gear is all present.

Problem is: this isn't a bug. It is the programming set up wrong for a subset of players who do not follow the default settings.

So, the complaints are going to be pouring in from people who say use different tray rows for different key binds and stuff like that. NOT from people who use what the program gives them.

Yech. And this is true. Usually the first thing I do when getting behind the wheel of a new character is rip out the old keybinds and rows, and configure new ones. Then I mess around with the outfits.
