I think it's very odd indeed that when in the Azura episode u can only heal the downed crew member if ur a Science office, yet u have a completely competent science officer in ur away team that have a healing ability and tricorder. also u can only release the plasma gas to kill the 1st group of Orions at the end in the hall if ur a tactical officer. WAIT! wouldn't that be a Engineering task? A tactical officer should get to beam in an extra team of 5 security officers. And if 1 of ur crew is a tact (ie Elisa Flores) would it be nice if you had her call the team in? Then ofc if Ur a Tactical officer I think it would be excelleent to be able to have ur Engineering Officer (ie Zarva) fix the warp core. It really simple. If ur an Engineer Ur space team should have tact - HYT, Engi - EPtS, Sci-TB. Only diff would be is for Tacts and Scis captains to have Zarva equipped with ET so they can heal the Azura and it can safely warp out completely healed. I do understand that this type of change would take weeks of Dev work for just this small change. But the concept of making ur crew much more interactive and vital to a MUCH MORE successful outcome of the missions would be soo immensely kul !! To think, ur crew actually contributing to the greater outcome of a mission ... hmmmmm. indeed.

Not a mistake. Working as intended. Team with other players to get the accolades.

Ignoring the clumsy sarcasm, this is a game not real life. It is a game design element that in some episodes there are different activities for different captain professions.

You'll see this again in Mine Enemy so brace yourself for the tormentous infliction of design choices that you disagree with.

Yeah, this is a Gameplay and Story Segregation deal. Not like the Science one even works half the time...

It hails from a time when the captains profession actually meant something, or at least tried to adhere to the unholy trinity of MMO's of tank, heal and dps.

I too would rather such tasks to be dependent on having the right class of officer in your away team. I always try to keep a variety the way the shows did and it makes sense that we should need to do the same for the same reason --to have the right people for the job when the need arises.
Well, given how these objectives work, That'd be a waste of time. The point to them is to give people reasons to team up.

If you need an in-universe reason, well, two things... several of them are missions where you don't HAVE boffs. Also your captain is presumably more awesome at being tactical or whatever than a boff.

The solution would be to give the option to let a Boff do the task but leave the accolade attached to the captain doing the action.

EX: Tac captain beams aboard the S.S. Azura and finds the injured crew. Menu options are:
    [Heal Crew - (Science Optional)]
    [Call for Medical Support]

The tac captain can not select the heal crew option as he/she is not a science captain but he can get the crew healed for immersion. No accolade is given for this.

Personally, I think it is fine the way it is. Why? Because a captain in his right mind would not allow a medical team to beam in without first securing the ship. At the end of the mission, your captain's ship beams all the survivors out anyways.

Moreover, the Captain is virtually -never- the best at any one specialty, that's what Department Heads and other ecxperts are for. A Captain is supposed to be conversant in virtually everything, enough to communicate with / understand advice from / delegate responsibility to the specialists under their command. Those specialists are always the best there is on that vessel in their specialty, or else they wouldn't hold the position they do.

Well... Captain Janeway had a background as a Science Officer aboard the Al-Batani before earning command of Voyager.

Each of the captains in the series had a specialty though, and it was quite rare for the bridge officers to outdo them at that. Riker was a conn officer. Picard was apparently a science officer who specialized in things like linguistics, archaeology and botany, with a side order of diplomat. Kirk's was least clear, but some variant of tactical seems most likely as his defining ability was military strategy. Janeway was science. I mean there was an episode dedicated to her studying wormhole theory with the alien of the week. The Sisko was an engineer. He was actually one of the designers of the Defiant. Archer was a pilot/navigator.
