Visuals overwhelming.

For some time now ive been hoping to find a way to disable alot of the visuals in the game, ESP in space, when ur in battle and you start clicking off your abilities and then thats it u get blinded by all this millions of visuals that never stop, its a real pain, esp when flying such a small ship, u just cant see the ship anymore. It would be good if the devs gave us a option to dial down, or select what visuals to be shown, some people may love em, thats fine they can keep em selected and some may want just a couple, but like for me i want none i like to see my ship going in the for the kill lol.

I agree, but I don't think this is going to happen. For some reason, somewhere somehow someone is convinced that this unbearable clutter of colourful animations carries any kind of information value.

While Chinese firework displays are nice and all. On a battlefield such as the running Breach event, seizure inducing displays kind of impede my ability to play, this is while arguing with the camera and the usual other things.

Guess I'm one of the few function over form type people given the amount of Barbie enthusiasts there are.

Totally agree. It's impossible to see what's going on with all the powers firing off these days.

We have been complaining about the mess of buff effects for years, nothing has ever come out of it.
  • alcyoneserenealcyoneserene Member Posts: 2,414 Arc User
Yep, gave the feedback, made the complaints, but, it seems it is supposed to carry informational value. Game artists said to give more feedback, but that hasn't worked.

Destabilizing resonance beam is my 'favorite' of them, a strobe light covering almost the entire screen has got to be the most insidious game visual ever.

When enemy players in planetside2 flash bang a room, your screen turns white for a few short seconds, which hurts a bit especially in night time fights on bright monitors in dim rooms. In STO, I guess it's supposed to induce seizures in your opponents too, and it's on a fairly short cool-down.

    +1

Only visual effects I want on my screen are weapons and hazards, I don't want or need anything else. Imo these effects actually have the opposite affect on gameplay from what their intended to do, as they make large battles visually overwhelming and difficult to understand.

what the point is being made that whilst some people are ok with ALL the constant visual effects, there are those that would rather have the option to disable them

Its not about getting rid of visuals. Its about re-design em with common sense. Most of the visuals are crappy designed , most of em are even broken, showing weird shapes and broken graphics, some of em produce lag, and a million of things.

Some visuals are not required, but others are. Because they are essential to let you know what effect is applied in your ship or whatever.
No, they are not essential. People don't even know what all the magic lights mean. There have been threads here asking what some effect is and many times no definitive answer has been found at all. And most of the time there are so many overlapping ones it's impossible to even see individual effects. For example, I don't know what that eye-searing green glow on the borg command ship in the previously posted screenshot is supposed to let me know. Much less why I should care.

A real starship captain has a crew who tell him when something relevant happens. And if the captain doesn't want to be distracted over some insignificant effect, he can order his crew not to report it. Looking at a chaotic mess of flashing magic lights on the outside of the ship is as ridiculously immersion-breaking as it is uninformative.

It's been an issue for such a long time that I really doubt that it'll get fixed without a dev making it a personal project done during non-work hours. :/ Even then, it seems that the issue is so deeply rooted that devs, not art department, have talked saying in effect that there's no other way to get info to the player, nevermind that there's so many effects now that the average player has no idea what any particular effect is supposed to mean.

On top of that, the Buff and Debuff icons on PC (consoles don't even show these AFAIK) have gotten so long that they don't help either, to the point that the only icons I actually know what they are and look out for are the ones for OSS ability and Competitive Wargames engine procs to keep things up. Everything else is constantly appearing and disappearing to where it's exceedingly difficult to hover over to get a tooltip, and when I do manage to see the tooltip, most of the time I still don't know what a thing is even with the tooltip being a unhelpful, probably intended to be a cool-sounding, name.

I don't have bloom on and it's still like playing in a kaleidoscope at times.

Turn flashy stuff down and make the chuffing icons showing said buffs bigger. I hate having to use zoom mode (leaning forward) to see what procced or debuffed me.

I've got bloom off and the ONLY thing that blinds me is when I get hit with Destabilizing Resonance Beam.

There are a large number of folks who play this game who seem to put a top priority on putting on a light show, using toy consoles, doing fancy maneuvers, and stringing visual effects together in ways they feel are compelling enough to share with their space friends as epic space stories about epic space captainry. That is their immersion, that is their "fun". Who are we to tell them they're wrong?

Let them have their visual FX, I say.

No one is telling them they are wrong, we are requesting an option to turn it off on our screens only. Just like they did with the disco balls that the trolls spam.

And what would be the qualifying criterion for effects that need to be invisible? It's not like you can turn them all off. Cannon Scatter Volley greates a special cannon animation to show that you're covering an area. Gravity Well or Warp Plasma needs to be visible. Plasma Fires are probably very important to know about.

The base effects caused by active abilities that came with the original game are fine. But the constant wiggling of passive abilities like spinning crosshairs, seemingly a dozen incarnation of floating arrows that point at me, away from me, at each other, up down leftnand right. All the green, yellow or purple glows or rings that appear out of nowhere - the game doesn't explain these effects, I still have no idea what half of them mean but they can completely cover a small star ship. Then there are the screen obstructing glowy effects.

A beam overload or attack pattern aren't the problem.

As I said above, the only FX I want to see are weapons and hazards. Everything else I can get by looking at the buff and debuff lists on myself and my target. I also just thought of a name they could give to a setting like this:

I'd like it to be robocop style... no ship vfx (damage vfx is expected) when you target a mob/enemy, it displays alongside it the buffs in words; turning to a rotating list of the buffs so you can see [epte active], [a2d active] and so on without all the distractions (and make it easier for people to learn what the status tags under the target mean!)
