My friend is a huge fan of Discovery and went ahead and opened 50 lockboxes. There was the understanding that the odds of the "big prizes" is really low, but there is other stuff in it. Problem is, most of that other stuff is garbage.
Most of the contents were R&D packs. Some of those have value that you can sell on the exchange, but with the impending "slotto upgrade system", the market has declined on most of them. Then there were the Commendation XP boosts and the Research XP boosts. They have not done anything with the DOFF system in years. What value does CXP have? They have not added any new research schools in some time either, which devalues the Research XP boosts. Also, nice to get a SINGLE "salvage tech" (the item you get FOR FREE for completing an Elite queue). Finally, there is the new "mini tech". You get ONE single use item that is a watered-down version some some T5 clicky console. It reminds me of some game I heard (World of Tanks, maybe?) that you could buy a round of ammunition for actual cash. 125 Zen for a one time use of "ablative armor"? Maybe, possibly, if this game had a healthy PvP population, someone might want a few of these for an edge. For PvE? Not a chance in Grethor.
I get that you don't expect the "uber prize", but they really should examine the consolation stuff. The stuff in the lobi store is character bound (or bind on equip vs account bound) and is priced to "entice" you into opening huge numbers of boxes. 900 lobi for a ship when the average is 5 lobi per box? End of the day, it just does not seem worth it to open lock boxes. I'm not seeing much value here.
The new traits will probably be interesting considering the tactics of our new enemies.
Traits are "upper end" and thus rare. My friend got one "Honored Dead" from 50 keys.
I'm talking about the majority of the stuff you get from the box. Which, seems to be XP Boosts and R&D packs (and the single "salvage tech" and "mini-tech"). Really isn't much value there.
I normally defend Lockboxes, however, I too believe that this time, they are poor value for money. Getting a single use token of a console is just not right. A 10x use would've been much better.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.
Let some other sucker open those boxes, just buy what you need from the exchange via key selling. Shame those boxes mostly net B.S. items like R&D boxes and XP boosts, with the occasional weapon pack and lame doff packs. It seems since they introduced the Infinity boxes, your chance of obtaining something decent has decreased 10 folds, the numbers are off, way off.
Depends on the box, and what you consider useful. This one's not as good as some for the lesser items IMO (but who opens them hoping for those anyway ).
Value is subjective in this case. You're also making a lot of assumptions from a vet point of view.
Someone collecting Lobi to purchase items in the Lobi store will find the Lobi crystals of value. Someone collecting materials to craft will find value in the R&D packs.
Remember, not everyone is an 8 year vet. To a new player just starting out, stuff like CXP and research boosts will have value.
I am not opening the box for someone else. This is not a charity.
Anyways, since my thread got thrown into the "Discovery suxs!!!" thread, I'll respond further in the "official" feedback thread.

50 keys is half-way to buying it on the exchange, even at first-day super-gouging prices. In a couple of weeks it might have been enough to buy it. It certainly will be when it hits the Infinity boxes.
People should only gamble for fun or for the lobi, not to get a ship.
after failing to get it in 240 boxes i now really don't want it. I've been around for 7 years and this is the first time i've tried to do this. obviously it will be the only time. it just seemed like it would be fun to get the ship for the new show and play like a kid and all. experience totally ruined for me. when i looked it was 700 million and the walker was only 200 million. So I couldn't see paying 500 million for the discovery. I guess I could have sold keys instead of throwing them away but wasnt really expecting such a problem. not sure how or why anyone does this over and over.

It brings me no pleasure in saying this, but you are living proof of what I was preaching on page 1 of this thread.
Buy the keys, sell the keys for EC, then use the EC to buy the ship.
240 keys would have sold for 960 mil (at 4mil per key), and as of an hour ago the Crossfield was down to 450mil(and may be even lower now). You literally could have bought both the Crossfield and Walker if you had just sold the keys.
I'm not saying any of this to make you feel bad; but I hope someone else is reading this post and will learn from your situation.
People should only gamble for fun or for the lobi, not to get a ship.
The ship is not the issue. The consolation stuff is the issue. You get something for your 125 Zen. Problem is, a "random" universal kit module is not worth 125 Zen. Nor is ONE "salvage tech" or ONE "mini-tech".
Let's say you are a long time player who wants to give some money to Cryptic because you want to support the game. You have purchased what you want from the C/Z store. You have the costumes, the ships, the character/bank upgrades. So, you drop 10 or 20 bucks on Keys, because you have everything else.
Why should I actually use the keys instead of just selling them on the Exchange? Sure, if you want something from the lobi store, you have no choice. Grind or open your wallet. However, if you just want to support the game... then why?
hour ago the Crossfield was down to 450mil(and may be even lower now). You literally could have bought both the Crossfield and Walker if you had just sold the keys.
Currently up to 800mil again
And given that there are certain Individuals that buy them out (especially the cheap ones) just to delete them so they don't have to see the Crossfield flying around, this isn't going to change any time soon.
Also you first have to find enough people buying Keys (100 and more) and have to hassle with the limited number of items you can put up.
If the items are going for a fraction of the price of a key on the Exchange, it is not "subjective". It is a net loss in measurable value.
You're still not getting it.
He's not going to. Some folks hang on stubbornly to the concept of Absolute Value. They're the same sort who want to stockpile gold in case of societal collapse, as if a postnuclear hunter-gatherer society has any use for a shiny metal that doesn't even make a good weapon.

In other words, like I said earlier: People should only gamble for fun or for the lobi, not to get a ship (or other contents)
For some people, the opening itself is fun, even if they get a loser box with just the lobi and a crunchy frog.
For some people, the lobi is worth it, because they want a lobi item like a console that is bind-on-pickup.
For some people, they open thousands of boxes so the law of large numbers kicks in and they get the 1-in-250 ships plus the rest of the items.
For the rest of the players, they should sell their keys for EC and buy from the Exchange. Lobi ships are reasonably priced there too.
In other words, like I said earlier: People should only gamble for fun or for the lobi, not to get a ship (or other contents)

Yep. I open some boxes each release for kicks. (Plus, I then can use the lobi for other stuff)
Which is good, because in several thousand lobi worth of lockboxes & promo RnD packs, I've only ever gotten one Big Prize (the Herald cruiser. Ooh. Aah.)
I apparently did better than some people, with my 30 Discovery boxes, in that I only got 2-3 RnD boxes, only one mini-tech (those really do suck), and got three different traits. Still, the more recent boxes haven't been as interesting as the old ones were. I miss the cheap ships that were in the T5 boxes, and I'm not terribly excited by random Kits & boosts.
Never said you were. To you, the items may have no value. Others will find value in what they get from opening a box. As I said, value is subjective.
If the items are going for a fraction of the price of a key on the Exchange, it is not "subjective". It is a net loss in measurable value.
There is little sense trying to be reasonable when the argument is literally, "if you or I believe it to be valuable, its value is self-evident."
Their argument is any quality considered of value at all is good enough to make it worth whatever it may cost to obtain, quantification is totally irrelevant in this type of worldview.

Sorry, but you have been around long enough to know better.
This is 100% on you.
Never open boxes because you want the ship, you know this but you did it anyway. Not sure why you would have possibly expected anything other then exactly what you got. Always buy from the exchange, but generally not on day 1. These ships always hit the market and unreal prices and then drop dramatically inside of a day or two. You only see these insane 700M+ prices when supply is low and everyone wants it.
Wait 2-3 days and buy from the exchange. As said before, you could have bought both with a 100% chance of success for less then what you spent trying to win one single ship and coming away empty.
Again, you have been here long enough to know better. Sorry.

Oh I totally know that. I just thought that it would be fun to play the way they want you to for once. Also posting 150 keys for sale individually was not sounding fun. I was perfectly prepared to clean out my zen on it - and I did with 12 key ring packs. I expected the ship somewhere around 100 boxes. I guess I just got taken aback by the cruelty towards people playing the company's desired way. How about a slaughter rule at 250? For me it costs zero but if someone pays $250 shouldn't they get a ship? Or are people so rich now that that's nothing? I suppose that's probably it.
I was really looking to have fun with the disco as I love the show. And yes I went in expecting to really hate it. and wasn't prepared for the serious depression and backlash on being reminded once again what a loser I am. Life say - No, you can not have a little fun. Go grind out some more misery.

Out of every ten keys I maybe use 5 on boxes, just for the larks. I refuse to buy them for EC as they're largely unflippable for any meaningful return. I'm an occasional flutter type though. The ships seem decent but not several hundred quids worth decent. Or even a few hundred million EC decent for that matter. If they'd been zen ships they may have made a little less dollary doos but they would have put a dent in the dil floating around AS WOULD MAKING DIL BETTER THAN A1:1 RATIO IN FLEET PROJECTS.

I'm not sure if that last part is directed at me, but if said anything that made me sound like I was calling you a 'loser' then I sincerely apologize. Unfortunately, one problem with written words are that they can sound different in my head then they do in the heads of those that read it. I was not trying to pile on you about opening the boxes and if it came across that way then that's on me and I assure you it was not the intent.
I am sorry you didn't get the ship, I hope you're able to get it down the road and that you throughly enjoy it.

No, not at all. I shake my fist at my luck and my life only. it's all on me
Maybe I'll get it for season 2 if I think of it then.

I just wanted to add on that I'm in the exact same boat here. I actually watched the Pilot to make fun of it, I thought it looked awful but I figured I should at least watch it.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I get that people have their issues with it, and to each their own, but personally.. I really like the show. I would like to have the Crossfield as well just because I like the show. I am pretty low on EC right now, but if I get up the motivation to get back into 'the grind' I might just have to pick it up someday.
