If we got an actual Romulan Faction, I'd delete my 5 existing Romulan/Reman alts and relevel them w/o batting an eye....
ok... maybe 4 of em... one's a delta recruit....

make them independent after level 10 and not force us to choose side.

This choice is mostly development time driven. You're not actually choosing that faction. You're choosing ships, costumes, and duty officer assignments. This is all that choice is about.

I would rather there not be any more factions, as Cryptic have trouble supporting one, let alone the other 1.5...

Well a mini-faction shouldn't require too much additional work. In the sense that you don't need to keep developing separate ships and powers and such.

Take AoY as an example: they only needed to develop separate maps once, and that was mainly for episodes too. All their ships could be used by regular Feds so no big loss there either.

If they did something like that with the Cooperative, Voth, Undine and all others that have been mentioned, you could still have something like 10-20 unique episodes with new environments, new species and cultures and develop some species that currently have less background information. After that, they join Federation or Klingon fleets.

So no need for additional separate fleet holdings, at most a few maps that you could also open up to the existing factions to warrant the development costs. No need to keep developing separate ships or anything like that. So it shouldn't be too costly, but it would still allow for new playable species with unique episodes and interesting locations.

@party popper: thank you - carefully, you craft uncanny representations of actual Lukari ships (so small yet so real) so that I may shoot them annoyingly in the face of my main rival (in his faaacceee)

Finally going to give up that chair, Quinn? Hm?
  • fleetcaptain5#1134 fleetcaptain5 Member Posts: 1,041 Arc User
I'd find that interesting. Even if they don't become fully independent factions with their own holdings and multiple separate maps that can only be accessed by them, you'd still end up with many more playable species with their own unique story arcs and official background story.

There seem to be enough players that are interested in playing as a Romulan - even when many players apparently don't consider it a full faction. Romulans didn't have that many ships to choose from just after launch either so a mini-faction with something like 10 different ships could work even if they don't receive much attention from the developers afterwards and if they just, eventually, join one of the other major factions with respect to fleet holdings etc.

This was said by Al Riviera, aka Geko, the lead designer for STO, during one of the podcasts. To paraphrase, "Any new faction that we put out, would be like the Romulans or Agents of Yestdary, a mini-faction."

The Romulans and AoY are their own faction, with their own introduction story. The Romulans just have the added benefit of choosing either the Federation or the KDF. This doesn't mean they're now part of that faction. They are still the Romulan faction. They just have access to the ships, costumes, story, duty officer assignments and starbases of their chosen faction.

So at level 10, they would still choose one or the other. But also like the Romulans, they will likely only have one faction ship to choose from as they level. Giving them a T1 ship, a T2 ship, a T3 ship and a T4 ship. To cover the standard promotion ship up to level 40. Then any ships they developed for this faction would be as we have now.

^This is to cut back on production time and costs.^

Also remember, while STO does try to base things on Star Trek canon. STO itself is not canon. With STO not being canon, this gives them the ability to keep it more action oriented. Which is understandable for an MMO. If they stuck to Star trek canon, then STO would be a lot like Black Desert or Archeage.

While I would enjoy seeing more factions and playable races appear in game. I also understand that it would be a mini-faction and that the story STO makes for it may, or may not, be concurrent with the canon of said species. This is just ones thing we have to take with a grain of salt.

    Romulans, the real ones.

Cardassians as playable race for Federation. They are a fed protectorate and might as well join starfleet. Their signature ships are lockboxed... so no faction for them.

This ignores the fact that CBS has to approve every single thing Cryptic adds to STO, and, much like the novel series, CBS has been largely forcing everyone who makes any sort of licensed Trek merch to follow screen canon(not that they can't add new things or w/e, but they do have to follow established canon when making them)

No, this accounts for that. "Does try to base things on canon." If the game were fully based on canon. It would not be the action oriented game that we have. Remember the onscreen canon here is 80% talking on ship/planet, 20% combat. This would make the game, "MOAR Talk, less pew.", instead of, "MOAR Pew, less talk." This wouldn't draw a very big player base.

For that matter TOS was very much an action show for the 60s.

    Cardassian
    Dominion
    Ferengi
    Borg
    Terran Empire
    Other (please state)

Can this please go into FCT's!!!

This is a common post and the answers are always the same. Not going to happen!

All the factions stated have ships in either Lockbox or Events, with the exception of Borg, for which there is no chance of it being a faction. You can't have an individual in the collective unless you are a Queen!

Cryptic has stated several times that the only species with enough of a fanbase ty warrant even a mini-faction like AoY are
    -Cardassians
    -Ferengi
    -Jem'Hadar
    -Borg Cooperative

^ Yeah I agree with this. There are so many races that look human from the first few series. I would defiantly want something that looks not human.
    -Borg Cooperative
    -Cardassians
    -Ferengi

    These would be interesting:
    -Xindi
    -Species 8472

My reservation is that I would only play the character though the content and then bench them like I did with my ToS toon because I have too many toons as it is. I can't get them to the level of special gear, upgrades, special doffs, accolades, and lobi clothes that my 7 mains are at. For that reason, I would only play for the novelty storyline and dump them.

TLDR: not enough account unlocks to invest in creating another long-term toon

Instead of a new faction, I could see some more races added in a similar manner to what they did with the Talaxians, Liberated Borg, or the Joined Trill. The only thing unique would probably be a race-specific costume (i.e. Nausicaan, Orion, etc)

Between the barren queue list and the effort Cryptic expects to be put into the new fleet holdings I really wish for no new factions or whatever other reasons there may be to make new characters.

As a faction? Orion Syndicate. Or as mentioned by others: civilian/freelancer/pirate, etc.

More likely? Let us travel BACK to the AOY galactic map/time and throw a handful of Klingon and Romulan ships our way from that time period. STO devs love time travel, and that would be a good expansion to go back to a map they already developed and just create a few new missions, and add a few ships.

The only way I could see them doing a Lor style faction, to a more full on faction in the likes of the Fed/KDF would be to do it in a form of paid expansion set-up., or a kickstarter style funding situation. I think it is a combination of money, and also just man-power, they would need to hire a second team that would work on such faction expansions, while the main team works on pushing the current content forward. The question would be if players would be willing to pay 50-60 dollars for a faction expansion pack an be profitable. That would have a set of new races, new missions, some ships, and maybe some new mechanics possibly.

I could see race expansions though. Like a small pack that you buy to give you the ability to make a character of a new race, as well as potentially maybe a small set of side-missions related to them an maybe a ship related to them. An example of this would be the Cardassians as a race-pack that gives you access to a set of three missions detailing events an why you are leaving Cardassia, at the end of which you would need to ally with one of the three main factions like the Romulans just on a smaller scale.

Well I think you're idea is probably closer on the mark to where they may take Cardassian's at some point. A sort of extension of Garek who lived and worked on a Federation controlled yet Bajoran owned asset albeit separated by most of his own people. Perhaps just like the Federation had the Maquis you find yourself playing a Cardassian who found their borders redrawn inside the Federation borders and we learn that story... :)

    A non aligned group

Basically non aligned group of all the mush mash races. You could have disgruntled ex starfleet officers, mercs, ex tal shiar, freed jem hadar, iconian allies, coop Borg....all bundled together. Throw in a few free state stations which give them their equivalent of ESD or quonos and sorted. Add a half dozen missions like the 23rd c officers and off you go.

Ship wise a mix of race ships with standard versions of some cstore ships...less powerful if course.

It would be well received i reckon. Id certainly pay for extra character slots to get one or two.
  • reyan01reyan01 Member Posts: 12,390 Arc User
    None.

Why? Because it would just suck. They would make these 'new factions' give them 4 or 5 unique missions to start and then make them feds like they do with the Romulans and Klingons.

Illusion of choice is not actual choice. If they could make these as actual factions.. then that would be one thing, but I think we all know they can't/won't. Better off to just not even bother.

    This. Very much.

I honestly wish people would just get over the whole faction thing. There is no way we'll get factions that don't tie into the existing storyline, which means the whole thing ends up being half-baked.

A true cross faction Independent Faction

Basically your merchants, cargo haulers, privateers, mercenaries, soldiers of fortune, etc. You could have Romulan, Klingon, and Federation member species all serving aboard the same ship.

They would have their own standard missions like the other factions, but would also get roped into the crazier missions in order to provide deniability for the people that hire them, be they Federation, KDF, Republic, True Way, or anyone willing to pay the right price.

Oh, and instead of getting a free ship upon attaining a new rank, you would have to "acquire" one from somewhere. The in-game mechanism is already in place, in the form of the KDF mission to steal a runabout and the Fed mission to repel the boarders off the Fed ship.
Mad Science means never stopping to ask "What's the worst that could happen?"

    Things I want in STO:

    1) More character customization options such as more clothing options like rolled sleeves, adding a "thickness" modifier to hair, and letting the complexion affect the entire body, not just the head.
    2) Bridge customization, not bridge packs. Let us pick a general layout and adjust the color palette, console appearance, and chair types, as well as more ready room layout options.
    3) Customizable ground weapons, i.e. The aesthetic look of phaser dual pistols but they shoot antiproton bolts.
    4) Terran Empire event similar to AoY, complete with new Mirrorverse recruits for all factions.
    5) Independent Faction, because yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me!

For me I can see two things happening allowing the Romulan Republic to be a separate faction it is now possible all they have to do is add a actual shipyard to New Romulus and that can be a redo of the Gasko Station itself. As for a new faction I can see the Cardassian's being added but the issue is the company is hot on Sub Factions and if they view there history that was the worse idea ever for the game as LoR had a massive back lash when this happened along with many other issues it caused and didn't fix. IF they want to add another race add the Cardassian's and separate Romulan Republic as its own separate faction, you could even add the Romulan Empire as a cause and effect of the aftermath of the Civil War and victory of the Republic. Helping the New Romulan Empire rebuild and lick its wounds.
