All day today, it seems at around Round 6, something like Tholians or Vaddwaar will come up and then the round is over in an instant. Sometimes it's the entire team being wiped out simultaneously. Sometimes there's still a person or two still alive but the match just ends.
Anyone else been experiencing this?

Tholians can cause total party wipes if everyone is together, particularly with their mines, but I've never seen Vaadwaur do it. Only the Overseers are really much danger among Vaadwaur in early rounds, and they can only be dangerous to 1 player at a time.
As far as 1 person standing goes, it takes a bit for someone who has respawned to count as active, perhaps not until they hit the ground after being released from their pen, so if someone just respawned as the last person died, it will fail the group, even though someone was technically still alive.
I can't say that I saw anything odd in my runs today.
Edit: Odd that we don't get Hirogen, or at least I've never seen them. I can understand not using the relative pushovers like most beasts and the Kentari, but Hirogen are at least as capable in a fight as most of the others in there.
I have got the Hirogen on nearly every run.... The Alphas are pretty great!

Tholians do an aoe radiation "bottom-burp" that ignores line of sight and that can be a game over moment. Same way skippy the bush kethi can spam the leap attack and effectively stun lock even if you happen to break LoS to them.
Vaadwaar overseers have always had a stupidly large range for the melee punchy things they do.
Most annoying thing with the leapy enemies though is some ability combos can and will punt them airborne or lodge them in walls where they can only be hit from very specific angles or upclose (summer seisimic thing and temporal bubble being one)
No doubt.. It happened to me a couple times on my last run... I cant understand it... Our being alive does not instantly count for the win but it counts for damage - seems really unfair..

I've been on some Sompek pugs where I was killing probably at least 90% of the enemies because no one else on the team could do any damage. I've seen players more useless than security team. And then there's the people who show up with no heals, no hypos, no nothing, and spend most of the time face down on the ground. Git gud.
I know people will say you should go with a premade but with the current state of the game, it's very hard to get 5 people together. Almost no one is online. Fleets and armadas are dead.
Truly odd, but then I've gone several runs in a row of untimed with no Heralds into the 20s, too, so I guess it can be really streaky about which enemies it throws at you.
I've dropped from my holding pen right onto overlapping red circles of death from a Harbinger Herald. Sometimes you just get dropped in a really bad place. Oh, and I've died in the energy beam in the hazard round, then hit the respawn button just as it went off again only to end up instantly dead on the ground below the nearest holding pen with a respawn button that doesn't work.
I know what you mean when you say that many people who show up for it in PUGs are quite obviously under-geared, and have little understanding of the ground buff mechanics ; i'm pretty much experiencing the same thing myself : while i have only minor difficulties staying alive and taking down tougher foes, some players in the team practically spend 50% of the running time flat on their face...
The problem is, Sompek is a temporary event, many new players want the new shiny that goes along, and they don't necessarily all have a 3-pieces mk XIV Ultra Rare Iconian set yet <.<
I think there is a problem with the Universal Translator as well. Sometimes I get a message that states "Please do not rez me", rather than "Thanks for rez'ing me". Seems like a very odd translation bug...
Which is nice, even if the weapon model is one of the several which makes me wish weapon skinning actually existed as a mechanic. Other worthies include:
If this is happening at around Round 6, are you sure your Teammates are not trying to deliberately die? Catching Tholians or Vaadwaur then would make it easier to take a dive.
l don't know.
l really don't know what l'm about to say, except l have a feeling about it.
That l must repeat the words that come without my knowledge.'
No doubt... My primary toon is [fire] team support focused so I use the RIN set for the great team shield heal along with using all the team buff traits in addition to inventory consumables and of course the IDIC tribble for that extra special somethin' somethin'...

Sure, you can make it work. But it is not a first choice or recommended pick.
My character Tsin'xing
5 and die.
It was merely a sarcastic post.
