STO started out as a subscription only game. When Perfect World Entertainment acquired Cryptic from Atari, the game was modified into a free 2 play game; all PWE games follow the free 2 play model. Since STO went F2P, the monthly subscription became optional.
Subscribing to the game does have some perks. The one that gets most people's attention is the 500 Zen month stipend. That effectively lowers the $15 monthly subscription to $10. Subbing over time can unlock rewards like veteran ships, extra personal and bank inventory slots, and the Account Bank. But all this is optional.
it was free to play for a while yes but not anymore. no reason to lie to me. guess it became subscription only when the xbox one and playstation 4 versions was released in order to make people play them.
I am not currently subscribed and played just fine today.
OP, I won't go so far as to call you a liar, but you're spreading false information and you need to stop. The free model has not gone away, this thread is completely untrue.

I have a free 2 play account that has existed since summer 2015. I have never been required to pay a month subscription in order to log in and play the characters on that account. I logged in as recently as last night. I have never spent any real money to buy anything on that account.
I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
i thought people would actually believe me as i never lie so i did not create a screen shot.
People might believe you....and they might even believe that you never lie....if it weren't for the fact that I just logged in to my sons F2P account 1 minute ago.......
support have already confirmed that free to play is no more.
Then whoever you spoke to or e-mailed to in support is wrong. Or you interpreted what was stated incorrectly. I have no problems with my F2P account.
If you have a problem logging into your account, then contact support and hopefully someone who actually knows what he or she is talking about will be able to help you.
Now if you will excuse me, I need to step into the Arena of Sompek...
i am never trolling or lying. i suspect however that many of the posters here is trolling. i guess i already figured out why free to play is no more. despite your refusal to admit it.
Since the game went Free to Play several years ago, there was still a Monthly Subscription alongside that. It is your choice whether to play for free or to subscribe and get the additional benefits. I have 1 Lifetime Subscription and 2 Free to Play accounts and I can verify that the game is not just for subscribers only.
If you are trying to access the Tribble Server, that is USUALLY open only to subscribers. The Tribble Server is where new content is (supposedly) tested and bugs are (supposed to be) fixed before that content is sent to the Holodeck Server, where the game is normally played. The Holodeck Server is accessible to both subscribers and free to play people.

You're either trolling or lying, you take your pick.
Nowhere else is there any mention of Star Trek Online dropping the free to play model. No other threads on here, nothing on their social media pages, nothing on Reddit, no official announcement.. nothing.
Out of all the thousands of people that play this game and discuss it on some form of social media site.. you are literally the only person that says that the free model is gone. Meanwhile, the rest of us are telling you that it's not.. you're trying to log into tribble, not into hollodeck which is the main server.
You really believe that every other player is wrong and you're the only one that's right?
The game is free to play on the holodeck server. The tribble server for most of the time is an added benefit of the subscription You have to be subscribed to get on the Tribble server not the Holodeck server.
When the launcher for STO appears click on the button that says holodeck before you hit the engage button. Also check that you are in the create content tab.
My guess is that English is not your first language and it is possible that Support did not understand your question. (I'm going to leave any discussion of Supports competence to others, as that is something else to discuss.)
it is not about being a prisoner of federation dogma and human prejudice. is not about lying ,truth is usually just an excuse for a lack of imagination. anyway ^^ just ignore the negative comments !
but there are situations even support can do nothing about ...

Yeah, now you're lying.
@baddmoonrizin can we get this locked or deleted please? It could lead to the spread of false information.
I suspect that the OP has no idea what they're talking about either. That or they're trolling the forums.
That would be wise.
