From the PoV of Europeans or Chinese or even Indians, the Mongols were barbarians. From the Mongol perspective, everyone else was the uncivilized culture. It's all in where you were bofn as to who is what.
The other reason I went KDF with my Rommie is I prefer playing Klingon in STO. My KDF Tac, Crell of the House of Jev, was created way back when a player had to level to 25 on the Fed side for the KDF to unlock. So when I created T'Cael Aelhollis, my Rommie Engineer, it felt right he would align with the Empire.
