The End of Gateway

ambassadorkael#6946 ambassadorkael Member, Administrator Posts: 2,679 Community Manager
Captains, the Star Trek Online Gateway system will be shutting down on April 13th. While some members of the community enjoyed it, the system never garnered enough interest to warrant further support. There are no plans for a similar feature at this time, and we apologize for any inconvenience it’s removal may cause.

Not all that surprising, apart from PvP, this was the least supported system in STO since it was released...

Of course it wasn't popular, parts never worked correctly at all and others not consistently. AoY Characters were totally scr*wed up as it did not recognize the Faction.

Shame really, then again, if I recall correctly it wasn't up for more than six months before you declared that support for the 'feature' was being removed.

It had potential really, all those little things that don't involve flying ships, sharing your build with people, although it failed to serve that role when the update to boffs was pushed that allowed them to have more than one ability, then the update system put the final nail in it's coffin as it wasn't updated to account for these factors. Still, this is stuff the company already knows so I'll stop.

*Sigh* Farewell Gateway, twas nice knowing thee.

Was rather useless to begin with. It would have afforded more functionality had we been able to fully utilize the DOFF and Admirality systems completely; based on last logout location of course. Nice idea, poor execution.

More like never garnered enough support to warrant further interest.

Excellent business decision to completely ignore the mobile market. Keep up the good work guys.

It was a great idea, but was never fully developed to the point where it was useful. I would have been nice if Gateway actually matured through development. I am slightly sadden by another feature removal, but that has become the norm with Cryptic--remove to better the product. (Like that actually works.)

IMO, a potentially invaluable resource... (had it been more developed) wasted.

But yes, after hearing of Neverwinter's botters exploiting their system, it does make sense.

It was useful for slotting starbase projects when not logged in, I will miss that utility

    Disappointing.
I would have used it more if it actually worked.
In fact, if it supported reputation projects, I'd use it every day. Since 99% of the time I log in daily, is for reps.

Well considering Cryptic refused to add functionality that players wanted, such as Doffs, it's not surprising it didn't get used. Not to mention it constantly refused to load half the time. You failed to care for it, as a result, nobody used it after a while.

Not to mention if you didn't block it was just a tool for certain bad element type ppl to see what accounts had treasure to plunder. I assume too that with doing anything for pvp it would have just been a bad bad thing to keep around after playing one game where ppl could look up see what you were using lol.

And let's not forget it's a feature that doesn't bring in any revenue, so there's even less of a reason for them to support and update it. But hey, tell me more about the next lockbox ship...

*facepalm* Of course it wasn't used often, it was very limited in its functionality...

A shame it's going away, I would have liked to see it expanded. :'(

So basically you take out the one way to track accolades, and leave no other way to do it easily since no one bothers to order them alphabetically. I'll have to log in tomorrow and copy/paste all the accolades on my main toon before they blow up the gateway.

    Self fulfilling prophecies indeed.

Actually sounds like the Mudd Android, Norman, would have blown up over.

It is not popular so we will not support it, but it cannot be popular because we did not support it. But you cannot... Norman coordinate. Boom.

Indeed. If it had been developed to do anything beyond looking at ships and characters while offline - like the OFTEN-REQUESTED support for Doffing and Admiralty, it WOULD have been more used. I checked in with it periodically in the hope that functionality had been added.

To say that it "never garnered enough interest to warrant further support" is completely disingenuous - unless you mean it never garnered enough interest among the DEVs - because it CERTAINLY garnered a good deal of interest among the players, until your perpetual lack of support for it killed it.

Thanks for the heads up though. It's nice to have advance notice.

It wasn't popular because it didn't work most of the time.
And even when it did it wouldn't always show all the parts it even did try to show, and would show some of those it did show wrong.

It wasn't a lack of interest.
We were just all wondering when it'll get out of pre-alpha.

I never knew this feature existed, and I have been playing for a while!
  • comrademococomrademoco Member Posts: 1,694 Bug Hunter
Yup, we waited forever to see the updates that were supposed to make it great, doffs, Admiralty, mail, exchange etc... But they never got implemented, thus why it was unpopular...

    Shm...

I did enjoy and used the gateway myself

it was good idea. but poorly executed. "The game" never listened what the gamers want / need the gateway to do, as for the other sugjestions (BTW is Defera Invasion zone missions working as they should yet?). And to do it correctly. RIP Gateway.

i can't believe. I have use the gateway so many time to help other members of my armada. it was a nice tool, yes it wasn't perfect but it was nice to have. i hope it will be released a new gateway in the future.

There were a lot of features that were promised for Gateway that never arrived, and so, I hardly used it.
This had great potential to become an app for phones too.
    You've missed a trick, there.

First of all: Sorry to see Gateway going off. :(

I'm an employee as well, so I don't blame the Devs or Designers who might have great ideas how to improve the Gateway and make it more usefull. Their boss defines "priorities".

If Cryptic would've taken a look to Blizzard and their Diablo 3 "Gateway", the STO Gateway would've been used much.
    • Why did I always get asked to login into Gateway when I was send an link to check? O_O No, I don't want to sign in. Just show me what I requested!
    • Why did my Bridge Officers always showed all of their abilities and not the equipped only?
    • Why did the Fleet support never worked well to contribute to Fleet while beeing mobile and accessing over Gateway?
    • Why didn't you use different sites like you do in STO like ground gear, space gear, traits, skilltree, rep, RnD, assignment etc. Each of these sub-sites could be set to "show others YES/NO". If I wanted to share my skilltree public only, all of the other sub-sites' permission would've been set to "NO".
    • Clickable items + mouseover popups to show item's real ingame stats.

Just copying from Blizzard would've been a great idea and there would never been a reason to use the STO Academy Skillplanner to share a build.

There're so many great ideas to make the STO GW really useful. I'm really sorry and sad you never realized one of them. So yes, the STO GW as it was, was just useless for us.

    I hope you'll bring back a STO GW 2.0 later... useful. :)

Happy Easter to you and your families,
    Mark

Would have garnered more support if it was usable with DOFF and Admiralty. That would be a slam dunk way to get activity.

I suspect the experiences with botting abuse on the Neverwinter gateway told them that implementing such a feature could end up being very problematic, and so they never started real work on it. But without it, the Gateway isn't bringing much.

Sad to see it go. Before it got badly bugged with DR, it was very nice tool to check builds of other players and show them yours.

It was a good tool for:

~ slotting and checking on fleet projects while off line or mobile
~ contributing to fleet projects while offline, especially toons pre-loaded with common doffs
~ helping members with their builds
~ keeping track of how many member visits your fleet was getting & seeing your roster organized by last time played*

*not that many fleets would want to really know these days :/

Used it on a regular basis and will miss it.
