I'm really grateful for the new fresh of air brought to PVP. However, would you please (DEVs/MrEP) consider making this
Player Potential System that in a nutshell calculates your PvP (competitive PvE) ranking in matches OPTIONAL?
http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/10434053-the-player-potential-system
If you take current PvEs as a basis can you see how many of those are empty now or made useless. I can't imagine the number of players who would be waiting for a match to start to the same rank you have. Probably won't ever happen.
If this is optional why not divide it as "ranked PvP" and "UNRANKED PvP" matches and give the player the choice to opt in/out. You are limiting the playerbase into slots that probably will be detrimental so some degree.
See SWTOR's model for rank vs unranked. I know lots of peeps hate PvPs but their unranked matches are always fun and a crowd pleaser in the PvP community.

We don't know 100% how the Player Potentail system will be like so let's see how it plays out first.
Most matchmade games I know (mostly on the console side) will still use a skill-based ranking system behind the scenes even if a visible rank isn't displayed. Incidentally, those are often based on simpler statistics [ex. XP] than the system's matchmaking parameters. Halo a while back tried to directly tie rank to their truskill matchmaking system. It turned out being quite obtuse and they moved onto other kinds of ranking/experience systems (while matchmaking's evolved in less visible ways.)

Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
Plus, if this system were opt-out, you'd just get people at the top of the skill range who'd opt out to try and get in matches with people they could curb-stomp. The alternative to that, if it were opt-out, would be to say that anybody who opts out gets put into the same pool and we'd have what we have now, which isn't exactly welcoming to new pvper's.
Exactly. There's a huge gap between a hardcore PvP and an average STO player. The unprepared player would last about as long as a Probe in Khitomer Space Advanced. People would be dying before they knew what was happening, which is not fun for anyone. Well, fun for some people who don't want a challenge.

And if you want to play with particular people regardless of ranking, I figure that least the PvP matches that already have a private queue will keep having that option.
So there is no need for it to be disabled. And since no one can see your ranking, it won't really matter for your ego or public standing either where you are. Ideally, the only thing you see is that you see more close matches in the long run.
If if does make people wait even longer than they already have to wait for the queue to fill, the system will fail hard.
Try SWTOR and see how it works (ranked vs unranked) I'm very sure other MMOs have similar options well. It has been done before and not impossible.
Those who are PvP hardcores in SWTOR do have the option to enter either maps and also get some bragging rights.
You cannot expect the same from STO since it has always been lacking in every sense and have no money to present better solutions to its playerbase.
Possible yes...Doable is another story since they just see $$$ and not quality.

Space combat and the F2P System in STO is far superior to SWTOR.
First off, I don't think STO is truly ready for such a system with it's player base, but the flip side, it may NEVER be ready for such a system, considering how many players it requires to become meaningful, and that would be quite a lot of players.
I think the devs have decided to make a gambit here, a do or die moment for PVP. They are putting up this system because they want PVP to either float and swim strong, or sink like a rock to Davey Jones locker and say "Sorry, we tried our best, PVP isn't popular enough to be our focus". I think they want a decisive outcome so they can say one way or the other what the future for PVP is.
SWTOR is awful if you want gameplay, mostly because their engine is completely terrible. Best storytelling though.
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
To be fair, TOR has the backing of a major videogame company, namely EA, so their budget is MUCH larger, hence why EVERYTHING has VO, and each class has its own unique story. STO has had to make due with a smaller budget, and is still one of the better F2P models out there.
As for EVE... that game is not a good comparison as that one has no story. Its an MMO sandbox. You want to be a miner, be a miner. Want to shoot things? Go shoot things. Want to gank players without warning? Go gank players without warning. Want to get into a massive war that costs people real money for losing their nice ships? You can do that. Hell... I heard a story where someone spent LOTS of money making this awesome top tier dreadnought... and it lasted only a few minutes because so many people were waiting for it to launch... so they could instantly destroy it. All that money... wasted.

Exactly. There is no balance in EVE's PvP. Its just a free-for-all. So saying EVE's superior to STO is misleading.

Probably
We are NOT talking Space combat nor F2P. This is about PvP/PvE competitive. Shall we stay focus? MILES away from STO dead PvP format.

I love PvP and I want the system to come down hard on anyone that tries to cheat the system or faceroll players by using broken and overpowered gear and/or abilities (because cryptic hasn't bothered to test in tribble).
1-trick-pony builds (like some of the builds infamous PvPers has before DR) should have the same consequences they used to have.
Those builds were hugely powerful, but could be 1-shotted by a BO2 and they were forced to spend most of their time running away from ships and having to wait around for 2 minutes because they could only kill when APA was active and didn't have the skill or equipment to take on a balanced escort or handle the pressure damage from a tank.
At least people spending the value of a SMALL country's economy on Eve's PvP...while in STO perhaps analogous to a 3rd world slum infested with the black plague. Right "NO" comparison whatsoever!

Uh... no... STO has an actual story and PvE content. EVE just has things to do and Players hunting other players. I'm not talking about the budget of the game. I'm talking about the substance of the game itself. STO is more of a traditional MMO, with a structured story. EVE is literally a sandbox where anything goes and you make your own story with no story content whatsoever. As for "spending" money on EVE's PvP... that's basically all the game is! Its all pretty much just PvP and PvP only! You could stick to core sectors that have a higher NPC police force to counter marauding players... but outside of that, its open season on anyone! Two completely different games. It would be better to compare STO to TOR or even WoW as at least those games have story content.

Again...are we talking about story/PvE content/money spent or PvP/Competitive PvE?
If you hate the other MMOS up to you but my point being JUST on what OP brought about in terms of mechanics. The upcoming system is a DISASTER to come. Just wait and I will write back..."Best Season Ever and Players really Love It"
Original STO beta tester.
It will be a disaster not because of the system itself, but due to STO's PvP reputation. Why would any PvPer come back just because they are matched with equally skilled players? There has to be new, exciting, and balanced PvP content to bring back PvPers. The Player Potential System will likely have more of an effect on the War Games, but that is competitive PvE not PvP.
