what would actually jump the shark for STO?

with todays announcement about making the enterprise J a playable ship, i started to wonder:

what would actually jump the shark for STO?

people used to say it would be an end game connie, but we have that now.

other people used to say the enterprise J could never be playable, but here it is.

so what would actually jump the shark for STO?

It's a Star Trek theme park. How exactly can one jump the shark?

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

The moment we get a playable tactical cube is the day STO has well and truly jumped the shark. Playable probe is one thing, but a full on tactical cube is flat out ridiculous.

You can play liberated borg. And there's the adapted cruiser the quasi-Narada.

Only thing that would jump the shark would be crossover ships, so a Star Destroyer, a Basestar, a Whitestar, etc

Tier 6 NX-01 Refits? Tier 6 TOS Constitutions? Space Dinosaurs with Lasers on their Head? Klingon Defense Force being a mixed race service?

So, I think, ultimately very little.

Look, this is a theme park MMO. It isn't a story driven game, it's designed for people to get their Star Trek fix.

Letting fleets fight over control of their respective faction Game of Thrones style. :p Ok, that would be in-character for the KDF, but not for Feds or Romulans.

That has already happened, depending on how you want to look at it.

It started officially with the Jem'hadar attack ship, but you can also look at it that it happened with the Klingons and the Kar'fi since that wasn't one of their ships or an ally ship of theirs.

Absolutely nothing. The avalanche started a while ago and players (for the most part) made it perfectly clear that they were fine with it. The 26th Century Dreadnought promo does not come as a surprise to me, and anyone who hates the idea of them becoming playable but were perfectly fine with a myriad of other starships over the past few years becoming playable have really waived their right to a respectable opinion.

Even if Cryptic came out with playable Borg ships, those of you whining about how it'll be the "last straw" will be right back here the next day to play STO or complain about it on the forums, and you'll still be giving the game your support and money.

I've seen too many threads where "Most Recent Playable Spaceship" is the death knell of STO and the final nail in the coffin, and where the game has finally jumped the shark. But here we are, years later. We have another expansion in the works, and there's absolutely no sign that the game is entering a "maintainance mode". The game has been ported to PS4 and X-Bone within the last year, and devs wouldn't bother devoting the time and money to that kind of project if there wasn't some cash left to milk from this cow.

At this point it's just whining. There's no legitimate concern. No legitimate criticism. It's just fabricated outrage because we have to get internet angry over something.

    ^all of this

As much as I would dislike playable Borg ships, anyone who says anything is the last straw for this game is being an idiot.

I think bendy straws would be the last straw.

some of the people replying are using terms they dont even understand what they mean.

a "theme park" MMO is the opposite of a sandbox MMO. in a sandbox, you are not told where to go next or what to do, where as in a theme park you are "on rails" and are guided through the entire mission chain. that has nothing at all to do witht he concept of jumping the shark.

jumping the shark means basically giving up on what your story is supposed to be, and just doing silly things to get attention or make money.

Nope. I mean it's a Star Trek theme park. It's a mishmash of Star Trek concepts from all Six shows and 12 films. As well as assorted non-canon books and stuff.

As long as it fits it is not 'jumping the shark'. One cannot jump over what little plot there is.

To add to that, I'd go as far as to say the ongoing storyline is just one additional ride you can choose to go on in the "theme park" that is STO, since you can also choose to ignore it entirely.

I assume it will be the midget version since the Enterprise J is supposed to be nearly 5x the length of the Enterprise D.

    Nailed it right there. ^^^
Besides, the notion of "jumping the shark" is more about a desperate and ridiculous attempt at relevance and popularity by a franchise that's failing. Since STO is healthier than it's ever been, it certainly can't be accused of jumping the shark. Regardless of whether a subset of players think a new feature or item is absurd.
