I stay lore-friendly with my names but with a bias towards Norwegian history, mostly as a protest against the lack of the Norway class (the only canon Federation ship class missing at this point I believe) in STO

Various notable towns/ places in Norway:
    • USS Narvik (site of Hitler's first land battle loss of WW2, and the biggest battles of Norwegian theatre - used for escorts and carriers, maybe in the future also battlecruisers - anything rugged and military)
    • USS Trondheim or Nidaros (first capital of Norway - I use these for cruisers)
    • USS Nordland (the objectively best district of Norway, location of the best nature and national parks - used for small craft)
    • USS Finnmark (the wildest/ most untouched district of Norway and home of indigenous people, the Sápmi, used for small craft)

    People:
    • USS Longyear (named after the founder of polar community Longyearbyen, where the global seed vault is today; this one is for science vessels)
    • USS Olav Trygvasson (christener by sword of Norway at the end of viking age, used only for Ambassador class cruiser)
    • USS Roald Amundsen (Polar explorer, used for science vessels)
    • USS Nansen (another polar explorer - science)
    • USS Bouvet (Norwegian island in south atlantic sea and most remote island on Earth - small craft)
    • USS Jagland (Norwegian diplomat, former PM, and head of Nobel foundation today)

Ah interesting thread! I admit I tend to use themes for my ship names.

For example my science captains use elements from the periodic table to name their ships. Tungsten, Zinc, Argon, Helium, Silver, Sodium ect.

One of my captains uses variations of fire/sun. Solar Flare, Super Nova, Firestrike, Firestorm ect.

And of course the T6 ship I use on my main character is called the USS Taggart, in remembrance of a certain npc many players know.

I do this to, to an extent. All my Assault cruisers have names related to Robin hood stories. My Pirate KDF his ships are named after those captained by Black Bart, My Caitian has ships named after the actresses that played Cat Woman over the years.

    U.S.S. Adelbert Ames (NCC-103135-E) - Tactical Star Cruiser (T6)
Odyssey configuration. Named for the Maine-born Civil War general and Reconstruction governor of Mississippi. I used to live up the street where he's buried, in Lowell, Massachusetts.

    U.S.S. Aurora (NCC-86725-A) - Tactical Command Battlecruiser (T6)
Presidio configuration. Named for a ship of a design based on the Sovereign (Kelvin-class refit, no relation to the Kelvin Timeline) destroyed in a roleplaying timeline set in the 2380s.

    U.S.S. California (NCC-91850) - Intel Assault Cruiser (T6)
    Sovereign configuration. My home state!

U.S.S. Skyrider (NCC-1831) - Kelvin Timeline Heavy Command Cruiser (T6)
An old ship that's been rattling in my headcanon for close to two decades. Originally used by my AoY main for his TOS Constitution, now used for this - on the same character, no less.

Venture-X configuration. Named for Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg.

I'll play! I'll only post my main's ships - otherwise it'll get silly (it may already be silly - I have too many ships).

RXS Afterburner - Risian Corvette - Taken from the Transformers (Technobot) character.

USS Aegis - Guardian Class - The name seemed to fit the class name, so I went with it.

USS Aquila - Tempest Fleet Patrol Escort - Taken from the ship in Assassin's Creed 3

USS Aurora - Reliant Class Light Cruiser - Named for the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

USS Axalon - Mercury Class Pilot Escort - Taken from the name of the Maximals' ship in Transformers - Beast Wars

USS Borealis - Scryer Class Intel Science Vessel - Also named for the Aurora Borealis

USS Defender - Eclipse Class Intel Cruiser - Named for a Star Trek ship in a roleplaying game I used to play.

USS Draconis - Thunderchild Class Heavy Escort Carrier - Named for the Draconis Combine, from Mechwarrior

USS Elysium - Eternal Class Temporal Science Vessel - Named for the 'safe zones' in Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines

USS Eon - Ouroboros Class Temporal Raider - Just a time based name that seemed to fit.

USS Europa - Odyssey Tactical Cruiser - Named for a ship in a roleplaying game I used to run.

USS Helios - Venture Class Fleet Exploration Cruiser (T6) - Named for the computer sentience in Deus Ex

USS Horizon - Paladin Class Temporal Battlecruiser - Named for an Event Horizon, and also the colony from Mass Effect 2

USS Hyron - Fleet Aquarius Class Light Escort - Named for the 'living computer' in Deus Ex - Human Revolution

USS Invictus - Regent Class Cruiser - Named for the Ultramarines Captain from the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

USS Logos - Fleet Gladius Class Retrofit - Named for the ship of the same name in The Matrix Reloaded

USS Maelstrom - Fleet Avenger Class Battlecruiser (T6) - It just sounded cool.

USS Mako - Fleet Phantom Intel Escort - Named for the tank from Mass Effect

USS Mithras - Dyson Science Destroyer - Named for the Roman god.

USS Navras - Fleet Bellerephon Long Range Science Vessel (T6) - Named for the song by Juno Reactor & Don Davis from The Matrix Revolutions

USS Osiris - Named for the capital ship in the game Freelancer

USS Outrider - Chronos Class Temporal Dreadnought - Named for a team of Starfleet Marines in a roleplaying game I used to play

USS Parallax - Paradox Class Temporal Dreadnought - The parallax effect seems to suit a temporal ship, so I went with it.

USS Parthenax - Jupiter Class Fleet Carrier - Named for the dragon in Elder Scrolls - Skyrim

USS Proteus - Fleet Perseus Temporal Escort - I was watching the South African cricket team, who are nicknamed the Proteas, which I quite liked, but wanted something a bit more 'Latin' sounding. As it turns out, Proteus is a Greek sea god.

USS Proximus - Fleet Prometheus Class Escort (T6) - I'd love to claim that this was named for the Latin word for 'nearest' (as in Proxima), but it's actually another song by Mauro Picotto.

USS Solaris - Wells Class Temporal Science Vessel - Named for the Lorecircle of Solaris from the Lone Wolf series of Adventure Gamebooks.

USS Solstice - Fleet Venture Advanced Research Vessel - Named for the winter/summer solstices.

USS Tempest - Fleet Manticore Heavy Destroyer - Named for the submachine gun in Mass Effect 2 & 3.
