A new exploration system wil likely have its own bugs, initially. But it will still be worth it. A lot.
Of course, that goes wihout saying. But we have a lot of game mechanics in STO these days that weren't around back then, so it could be very rewarding. For example, back then the missions were all separate. If you got a "helpt he planet" mission you warped in, gave them commodities and warped out, mission complete. These missions could now be expanded with varying objectives, like escorting a freighter to get the required commodities, or investigating a distress signal. Upon completion the aliens we just helped are friendly - and maybe come back helping us in a later random mission where we face trouble. The system could keep track of the aliengen aliens we meet and create our own personal stories.

"That pig smelled horrid. A sweet-sour, extremely pungent odor. I showered and showered, and it took me a week to get rid of it!" - Robert Justman, appreciating Emmy-Lou
i'd also hope to see some more...aggressive random missions against aliengen species in a revamped exploration system for those who like to play pirate
only starfleet explores for the sake of discovery; most everyone else explores for resources, technology, territory and plunder
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
