So finally got the little triangle today and have been using it extensivley , and so far its an alright sci ship for a sci captain on a budget, but for more serious sci captains you might wanna look elsewhere.
The good the bad and the ugly
The good :
Its console layout isnt that bad 5 sci , 4 engi and 2 tac
gives the little ship some good flexibility.
the 4 engi consoles makes it a much more survivable sci ship compared to some other sci ships out there.
Its a quick little ship almost as manuverable as a BoP almost but not quite.
The bad :
The boff seating is what starts letting this little ship down
1 :
Intel seat is on the LtC engineer boff seat, that alone takes it out of play as usable unless you live dangerously, the second sci seat is only a Lt which takes away from alot of flexibility with boff abilities vs other sci ships, the uni is again another Lt and no specialty to boot so again another disadvantage vs other sci ships of the same tier, tac station is the usual Lt so no harm no foul there.
The ugly :
The real ugly business is the protomatter console thats part of a multi part set that unlocks its multi mission capabilities, however you have to buy the new multi mission bundle to get those consoles , the fact the ho'kunns' true potential can only be tapped by buying the bundle is just sad.
In review
Not a bad little ship but compared to let say last years krenim sci ship its woefully lacking, the krenim sci is a far better ship the ho'kunn is a good ship comparable to the d'kyr at T5U with a trait and console and an extra eng console slot.
Imo if you need a sci ship and cant aford one? then by all means use it , but if you can get a better sci ship do it get the trait dry dock it and fly something better.
Edited : For saying temporal opperative seating when its Intelligence seat, highlighted in gold is the correction

I just claim it and immediately discharge it. If you're hard up for a capable Science Ship though, it's not a bad choice. Not great, not terrible either.
Scratch that point because the dorito can't use those consoles. Same deal as with the older anniversary ships, their console is free for all but the sets are restricted to the mega-bundle.
Also, the bar in front of the bridge officers gets really annoying

Plus sides to me include the amazing looking bridge and the fact the players chose the design, so at least some people will be happy with the design aesthetic.
I think whilst the hybrid seats are not too flexible I think if you ignored that aspect of it you could still run a very potent little ship there.
Only think I miss from it really is a lack of space barbie options, something they don't seem to bother with for event ships nowadays.
Thats what im driving at in this review its a good and serviceable sci ship for the sci captain on a budget.
Then that just makes that point even worse.
I don't think anyone is arguing that the ship isn't good. Guys like Timberwolf can pull 100k in anything. There are a number of videos out there of people pulling 100k+ in the T6 Resolute, a ship that's widely accepted as the worst cruiser in the game.
The OP's point is that it's good, but not great and he's spot on. It's a 'good' ship.. it's an excellent reward for the Omega Event and it can certainly be a useful ship. There just isn't anything that makes it a 'must have' ship. Given enough effort, you can do 100k in any T6 ship and probably quite a few T5-U ships.
True enough. He just did an Avenger T5U (that they had given away for free) budget build and did 55k. As someone who doesn't keep up with all this stuff I find these sorts of "reviews" confusing. On one hand I see a review saying it's not great and then I see someone do over 100k. So no idea what to believe. Even when the Nandi came out ppl said it was "ok". Then I hear someone was ranking 3rd or something in the sto-league with a Nandi build... Really confusing lol
If you haven't put money into the game to fly something souped up, the Illuminati eye-in-the-pyramid science ship seems like a serviceable introductory craft for learning the joys of space magic. It also completes the Braydon 4 piece set which I didn't see mentioned in the review. Even if you don't fly it, unlocking it creates some potential that goes beyond just this hull.
I agree
Also, yeah the Eternal is an amazing science ship and it's probably still the best. I did, however, scrounge up all of my dilithium and put in a few bucks to fill in the rest to get the vesta 9 pack. The ships are great! The consoles do amazing damage and the shield stripping one can strip shields even in elite content. Also, the Charge Particle Burst trait is really strong against grouped NPCs and I haven't tested the Heavy Tachyon mine trait much, but I did get a 30k hit with really bad gear on an alt. I can see these ships in better hands doing some really great DPS in a EPG/Drain build.
Ive only slapped on the FE set and some basics I had laying around and run a few normal things and I agree... 'solid but not great'
Now that said, I did give my eng her specialty powers, and structural integrity I, and used the uni seat for a second engineer with Eng Team and Ep2S. This takes a little of the "Danger" out of using the specialty seating for some specialty powers imo. My Lt seating has sci team and hazard emitters, to back up the Engineer. Less space magic but makes a workable PvE build for most situations imo
They have "given" you a Chevette when people were hoping for a Corvette.
Business as usual.
I hope everyone enjoyed all the "work" they didn't have to do to get one because it was "free."
Edit: Almost forgot, excellent review. I was working for the ship card & trait, which means I still have to get back in there & work some more!
not like I wasn't gonna farm omega for money anyway
If I was good at that, I would have too.
you need you 3 eng abilities to keep you flying , the univesal shouldve been a LtC and temp op slotted, as it is the boff seating is rigid with little flexibility.
What.. umm.. no you don't.. eng team and reverse shield polarity is all that you should be needing..
Depends on what flying you do. And the seat on mine is Intel, not temporal. Maybe you got a special version
For the normal queues and missions there are other options. Sure I slotted emergency power to weapons, but used Intel abilities for the other two Boff powers. My won't set records, but it flies just the same.
Ive taken the ho'kunn into tzenkethi front advanced and polarity only goes so far , you will need eng team or EPtS 1-2 plus polarity, just to keep you alive because most your sci stuff will be taken up with attacking space magics, unless your a heal wagon then sure it would work.
Im not saying its a bad ship what i am saying is its comparable to the vulcan D'kyr as in its good for the captain on a budget , but if you can get better do it.
I was thinking more like expecting a 2017 ford mustang and getting a ford pinto instead lol
But nice analogy and spot on
yeah i did get that wrong sorry
I forgot to proof read it will fix it though thanks for the catch
Pretty much only time I die is do to one hit wonders.. like being the last hit in a chain of isometric charges or being caught to close to warp core breaches.. as the last hit on those isometric charges can hit well over 100k on the fourth hit.
Really the only thing lacking on that ship is the weak trait and console
Im surprised you were not expecting this, the Kobali console set is the same
