Yes I can honestly say as I am entirely grateful for all the freebies I have received from Cryptic down the line. I am free to play, but spent an awful lot over the years, my justification being that its a free game, so as long as I get as much enjoyment out of it as a game I would pay for then I'm happy to spend cash when I have it. I have tried to get a few RL mates of mine to play this game, and they've given it a go but ultimately left saying "dont want to spend cash, too much grind to get it free etc". What irks me with this is that if you stick with the game and keep an eye out, you get so much for free. It really is a game that rewards long term play, I have so much free stuff, purely from being active ingame and clicking "claim". Grateful and happy camper in this regard.
"If this will be our end, then I will have them make SUCH an end as to be worthy of rememberance! Out of torpedos you say?! Find me the ferengi!".
I find it hypocritical that when some players protest over things like P2W, monetization, time gating, grinding, etc. etc. there is no shortage of other posters rushing in to defend the company on their business practices as totally legit.
The mistake you've made is in thinking it's the game and the company that bothers me when it's really not that at all. It's people posting who don't waste a chance to try and smoke another poster for having an opinion that differs from theirs, especially if it goes "against" the game and/or the company in their opinion.
If I didn't enjoy STO, I wouldn't be here. But I don't think there's a need to get all gushy over what they do to recruit and retain players. And there's no need for you to resort to name calling. Grow up.
I must've missed out on it because I had already had it. I ground out the dil when it first debuted & traded for zen, buying it in the c-store. I guess that's still "free" according to your definition though isn't it? I also upgraded it to a fleet ship & then got to T5-U when that went down & then even later bought the fleet T6 version as well for the intel seat. I did get a few "free" upgrade tokens, and bought some others for all the ones that didn't qualify (don't even ask about the mirror ships...). I don't yet have the Arbiter, but that's where this trail ends...5 ships later.
Business folks call this planned obsolescence, and while it may not make the thing you bought totally useless, it does tend to encourage you to buy a new one of whatever they are selling...which goes back to my original point.

I share a basic mindset with you, at least so far that I do not feel "gratitude" towards a company. The reason why some of us got all those things for free is because it was a promotion from Cryptic, we didn't get "rewarded" or "honoured" or whatever, it serves to increase their player numbers and encourages players to spend. However in reaction to players like you who constantly call Cryptic and STO a scam (in those exact words or others) and work (your own fault entirely) @artan42 's (should it be artan42nd then? Hey, are you a clone?) listing is a nice counterweight to the self created agony some players like to suffer through, namely some self created satisfaction of simply enjoying the game and a few free gifts. Also, I'm no economist but I'm fairly certain you used "planned obsolecence" wrong since it would imply the T5 they gave away (they did give away T6 ships as well, but meh) would become "unfashionable or no-longer useful", both of which doesn't apply to T5 store ships - it applies to non store T5 ships since they lack the upgrade and as such are objectively obsolete, but upgraded (fleet) T5 are literally on the same level performance wise as non-fleet T6, they might have one less BOFF but have more HP and shield as well as unique visuals.

"Planned obsolescence" is if something actually stops to work, either by design or by intentional lack of quality to cut costs. It is not "something shinier will come along".
And all T5 ships, notwithstanding that there may be one or two with a horrible layout, are capable of handling every content the game throws as us. Not the DPS leagues, sure. But they still work, and will probably do so for a while, so they are not "obsolete".

I never doubted that. And I am prone to fall for shiny stuff myself. And the new shiny stuff also is (on average) better than the old stuff. But the fact is that these older ships are only obsolete in the way that yesteryear's fashion is obsolete. Many people moved on, maybe there are better materials now, but the old stuff still covers your body well enough to last through winter. In other words: not obsolete at all. They can do whatever is asked of them, and thus giveaways like this one are not worthless.

I used that as a convenience. However, like a used car, it is essentially worthless to the manufacturer; to those who already own it, and to those who never cared for it.
Think of it as a free keychain given away by a used car dealer. Any cost is offset by the advertising, and it just might get you to want something slightly better. Yes, a 2007 Impala gets you where you want to go (hopefully) but wouldn't you rather have this 2015 Camaro? Here's a free keychain to have while you think about it.

It is free since you did notpay currency for it. As much as "time is money" is thrown around in a fundamental capitalist society it doesn't apply here even if you follow that backwards logic since you "pay" your time to be entertained, not to get a ship. If the game is no entertainment to you and you consider it work that has to pay off in forms of a new ship it's entirely your fault and a self created dilemma; it's a entertainment product which inherently has no monetary value. Your opportunity costs are derived from the value of entertainment gained spending time in the game, not getting a prize out of it.

Those twenty-two seconds cost you 500 zen!
Sarcasm, yes - yet maybe not as far off as you think depending on what your time is actually worth. It's why zen exists - for people that have more money than time.
Last month I purchased an Arbiter. Last week they gave me a T5 Avenger. I got the complete set without having to pay the price for one of the ships. Since I didn't steal it, it was given to me free.
Was it for promotional purposes yes? Was it also a gratuity as thanks for playing the game? Also yes. As asserted when they did the first week long giveaway (that I was here for) several years ago after the initial Risa event.
You can call it what you want giveaway, promotion, advertising, sweet deal, bribery, kickbacks, clearance, punishment for people who don't log in daily or check the news, whatever. I got a nice little addition to my Admiralty fleet and a console, and a few times some outfits without any additional effort and allowing me to use the resources that I have to get something else. I appreciate the gesture.
If I go into a store and buy something, I say thank you, the person selling it says thank you. Cryptic lets me get some of the in game stuff without coughing up something except the effort to log in and press claim, I also say thank you. Basic courtesy.
And it's pretty cool to see it all tabulated like that, so thanks to the OP.

I would go with Artans. Artanite could be stylish.
