I'm pretty sure if I turn down the graphics this particular problem will go away, I'm just not sure which setting to turn down. My computer only gets hot playing STO, every other game I have works great and doesn't get very hot.
Yes, my graphics card fan kick into overdrive when I'm playing STO.

Me too. Other games and functions are fine; STO makes the laptop shut down it gets so hot. Put a cooling tray under it, but that just delays it for a bit. What ever thay did about a month ago is the culprit.
Or else try upgrading, I hear that Yoyotech's XDNA Aurum 24K can run STO with max settings and very few problems.

[Serious] Not sure if you are on a laptop or PC, but definitely worth physically cleaning graphics card, I'm running a GT630, which used to run at 100-105C!!! when trying to run STO on even half graphics on DX9. So I took the bugger out and gave it a total clean, dropped a couple of silica gel packs in the bottom of the PC case to deal with any moisture and now I hit 75C max on max graphics and DX11. Cleaning clogged fans and dust-covered heatsinks can make a difference. I used to get a noticeable fan speed-up in sector space, but only around the exploration clusters with all of the nebula gas effects.

That's a lot of what I'm getting. I guess I will have to try cleaning my fan.
Had the heat issue as well on this laptop. I added a 1/2 inch spacer made of those felt feet you put on chair legs over the microscopic feet on the case. Since I did that I have not had heat issues since. IMHO the clearence between the bottom of a laptop and the surface the sit on is way to narrow to let an adequete airflow into the cooling fan and vents.
I would sympathize--but I'm running on a full tower with lots of fans and it's about 80% air in there already. That being said, compressed air rules, like @smeeinn1t said.
Have you used anything to measure the heat? It's not unusual for video cards to get hot during gaming sessions, but if it's getting unusually hot then you might have an issue with either your GPU fan or one or more of your system fans. There are tons of free software programs you can install to monitor you GPU temperature.
Normally, GPU's can get up to 80-85c (185 degrees) and still be in the 'safe zone.' If you're seeing temps upward of 90c+ then you might have a problem.

mine barely gets above 130F on most games i play; i must have above average cooling then

I've got a laptop with switchable graphics. I've got something to monitor the CPU but no the GPU. Last time it got hot and I quit I checked my cpus and 2 of 4 cores were running over 90c. Compressed air seems to work for a little while but I think it just treats the symptoms.

You're right there in that normal range. My temps are about the same (GTX 1080) even under full load. Most of the time, if you have even descent cooling and aren't overclocking then you're just fine. Sounds like your system is right where it should be.

Laptops are a bit tougher, gaming laptops especially can get very hot. I haven't really looked at my temps when playing STO on my laptop. I'm not sure if it's more CPU intensive or GPU intensive, but now that I think of it, my Laptop gets hotter on STO then on most other games. Even games like GTA V or Witcher Wild Hunt don't get my laptop as warm as STO. Unfortunately, when it comes to laptops, there isn't really much you can do. If you feel it's getting too hot, you might just want to try and lower the settings a little bit and see if that helps. It could also just need a good cleaning, you might want to see if you can remove any of the panels on the bottom so you can make sure all the fans are working. I know some people use the Laptop cooling pads, but in my personal experience, those don't do much of anything at all.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

STO is the only game that causes my computer to shut down instantly once in a while. All the other games I run on it seem to not have the problems I notice STO causes.

Good idea. I'll try that. Thanks for the tip.

I don't have any temperature problems running STO on my desktop or my 3 laptops.
