I know the story is fictitious but set during the Meij Restoration, The Last Samurai.
Beautiful movie, the ending is enough to make anyone shed a tear.
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Throwing out another movie that actually fits my personal standards for a 'war' movie.
"The Blood of Heroes"
Plus, if any of you have not seen it, I think this film speaks well to a Klingon heart.
I guess full disclosure requires me to say that for me a war movie can be set to any scale, and any code of conduct. A war need not be between nations, or even tribes. It can be between any group or group vs another, and it can use any weapons that fit the battlefield. The wisdom of Sun Tzu is not only applicable to armies.
If you liked the original 'Road Warrior' film, you can see maybe why I consider that to be a great war movie. I hope I still on topic.
If you want a few against the many war movie, I recommend Zulu. It's the story of around 100 british soldiers defending a mission station against 4000 Zulu.

Dr. Miranda Jones: I understand, Mr. Spock. The glory of creation is in its infinite diversity.
Mr. Spock: And the ways our differences combine, to create meaning and beauty.
- Platoon
- Apocalypse Now
- Kingdom of Heaven
- Blackhawk Down
- Saving Private Ryan
- Glory
- Gettysburg
- Gods and Generals
- Flags of My Fathers
- Starship Troopers
We Were Soldiers is another one in my top 20 war movies. It showed both realities of war, you saw how it affected their families back home and the hell the soldiers went through just to stay alive in that landing zone.

Dang it, I forgot about Gettysburg. Man I haven't seen that in years...
Haven't watched too many war movies, but I caught part of The Longest Day and enjoyed it. Very fond of The Hunt for Red October, Flyboys, and Red Tails, too. Another interesting one is K-19: The Widowmaker, about a reactor accident aboard the Soviet Navy's first nuclear-powered ballistic missile sub.
"Great War! / And I cannot take more! / Great tour! / I keep on marching on / I play the great score / There will be no encore / Great War! / The War to End All Wars"
— Sabaton, "Great War"
1. Red Dawn (( the 1984 version! ))
2. Band of Brothers (( Yes, as another poster said, it's a mini series, but well worth watching. ))
3. Full Metal Jacket
4. Saving Private Ryan
5. Rambo/First Blood series
6. Top Gun
7. Operation: Petticoat (( I also enjoy comedies. ))
8. 1941
9. Where Eagles Dare
10. American Sniper
Additionally, I also enjoy older military sitcoms, such as McHale's Navy, Gomer Pyle USMC, Hogan's Heroes and F Troop.
Resident TOS, G.I. Joe, Transformers and hair metal fangirl.
@jamieblanchard: Don't get me wrong, I like Top Gun, but I don't consider it a war movie as much as a romance drama with F-14s. Not knocking your choice, just seems odd to me.
Oh, one I forgot: the full 5-hour version of Gods and Generals (with the caveat that I don't like the Confederate apologism it expresses sometimes: for the record, the Civil War was entirely about slavery, the CSA vice president admitted as much publicly, as did all the secession resolutions).

Yeah, I like Denzel. He is actually in two movies on my list; the other being Crimson Tide.
He was a good villain in Training Day.
