It's a hefty enough penalty for not playing the event as it was designed.
It already WAS penalized by being changed to the current state
But it's a compromise I'd easily agree on. Spending Lobi on missed-out event-currencies for older Event-ships I'd be okay with.
Uh yeah. Didn't say that there isn't a penalty right now. I just said that my suggestion is a hefty enough penalty. Also the current system is preferable to the old system of grind 1000 thingies for each character anyway. I mean, who wants to do that 8 times in the same year?
When you see "TRIBBLE" in my posts, it's because I manually typed "TRIBBLE" and censored myself.

That was the first incarnation when the events had multiple ships to unlock for the first time - after that it was changed to account-unlocks (also given in reverse to players that had at least one toon with event-unlocked ships).
I think this was done during the Winter Event 2013 or Summer Event 2014, not quite sure right now - at first it was of course not working for everyone due to bugs, but eventually worked fine.
Then they abandoned it after Winter Wonderland 2014 because of their 'right now and nownownow'-metrics.
the problem is when they run an event they want as many players to play as possible, like it or not making past rewards forever slotable would result in many players putting off events with the sure knowledge they can always get the reward next time the event comes around
So? Players would still have to play, and even play more when they have left out multiple events. The amount of time played will eventually be the same, just not "right now". There is a balance here.
Also, it already WAS that way a while back - they changed something nice and fair to the worse.
so if you invited all of your friends to your birthday party and every year no one ever come them five years later they all turned up you would be just as happy, no? surely it was eventually the same?, they all come just not "right now".

It's important for players to play "right now" as cryptic is shooting for revenue "right now." Players playing = money for cryptic. That's why they want you to play this year's event this year and next year's event year. That said, I think that it would be smart for them to open up past projects with the lobi for old currency system as it means more revenue for them. It's a hefty enough penalty for not playing the event as it was designed.
on the face of it that seems like a good idea but look at it from cryptics side, they are giving up players playing the event "right now", for some unknown rewards they may or may not receive in the future, not worth it in my opinion.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
My beef with lock-boxes, is that I've no way of knowing what I might get, so I can't gauge if the cost of a key is actually worth it for me. My situation is that I need to justify said expenses like that, and while I can afford to spend the money, I can't afford to waste it... Equally, I don't want to waste it on an item I might not even want... Will I be getting a ship? A console? A weapon or other component? A BOFF? That matters, to if I'll consider getting a key to use... If I don't want what's in the box, why should I waste my resources opening it to find out if I want it or not? Even if they were to just be color-coded to give an indication of what kind of item is inside, ie ship, console, BOFF, weapons etc, that would allow me (and anyone else) to then make the informed choice of "I want to pick this box up, not that one... I want to open this box today, not that one..." Making sure that something comes out of each box means that technically speaking, the player isn't gambling (because they are getting something for their money, but it is still a gamble, in terms of what that 'something' actually is, and until there is a definite indication, I'm not wasting the resources to open them...
My suggestion for a solution, is to make all items and content freely available via the C Store, that way a player can see what's available, then decide if they want it or not... If they want it, they buy it... If they don't, then they ...don't
Isnt this exactly how the exchange already works, and always has?
I don't know, I've only been playing about 8 weeks, and don't really use the exchange, unless I want something specific, so I don't really understand what you mean... Are you meaning that if I wanted a specific lockbox item, that I look on the exchange and just purchase it? I guess I could do that if the price was right, but it would also require me to know what's actually in the lockboxes to search for the item, and to be honest, that's a little more effort than I really want to spend on a game which I play for fun

I don't think that anyone in their right mind would put off the event so that they can spend 1500ish lobi ($300 in keys) at a later time. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it takes around 1500 lobi ($300 in keys) to get all the necessary old currency through lobi->old event currency conversion assuming you start at 0 old event currencies. I doubt it would cause people to just skip the event en masse.

I've little doubt that a decent suggestion like this from their customer base will do much more than fall on deaf ears at Perfect World/Cryptic. But.
This would be so appreciated by me. While I am more than willing to allow the acquisition of special ships to remain totally at random determined only by an esoteric game mechanic; I see no viable reason why a "choose your own reward" option for lockbox stuff like consoles, etc. can't be incorporated into the various lockboxes - - - similar to what the game already allows in most mission rewards?
Allowing only this would prevent those of us willing to purchase keys from time to time from being forced to receive the same two or three supposedly "random" items DOZENS OF TIMES!!!!

Thanks for the feedback and the appreciation I look at it this way: Current ground equipment drops are color coded white, green or blue (I've seen no puprle ones, but perhaps they exist) which I'm guessing corresponds to the 'rarity' colors of the item. I don't see why lockboxes couldn't use a similar system (either the box itself, or the glowing plume) to designate the type of content up for grabs

No one can help you if you aren't willing to learn.
And given your condescending replies, I doubt you were actually willing to teach, just latching onto an opportunity to make a quip... Bit don't worry, I'm sure I'll manage

Be that as it may, if you aren't willing to do you part, because 'lol its too hard lol' or whatever, you're not going to get as much out of sto as you could.
Well, I'm enjoying myself thus far, which, at the end of the day, is all that matters That's not to say that I'm not prepared to put in the work, I've spent hours going over and comparing ship stats before making a purchase, to make sure I'm getting the best fit for my crew. Had I waited 24 hours, I most likely would have bought the Archon instead of the Guardian, and saved 500Z in the process, but hey, them's the breaks... I've watched days worth of walk-throughs on YouTube to bring myself up to speed on the things which I think will help my progression. I'm quite willing to learn, but if I don't know an option even exists, I can hardly be condemned for not knowing about it, and when I did ask a straightforward honest question, all I got was a smug rhetorical response... Like I said; No worries, I'm sure I'll work it out

crazy people do what crazy people do and I would not put it past anyone who is crazy enough to spend 1500 lobi ($300 in keys) for something that was once free spending just as much to avoid doing an event and probably think they got a bargain.
but then I would baulk at spending $300 on anything virtual anyway.
I spent enough to get lifetime on sale as I play a couple of hours every day and sometimes more that seemed like a good deal with all of the perks and monthly stipend but that is probably all the money I will ever spend on this game or any other.

You don't need to spend real money to get lobi, you can get keys and promo packs on the exchange, or trade dil for zen to get them.
To be fair though, one needs to convert A Lot of dil to get even minimal amounts of Zen... Sure, conversion is possible, but I'd hate to think how much dil someone would have to convert to get the Z3000 for a nice ship, and how long that process would actually take...
You don't need to spend real money to get lobi, you can get keys and promo packs on the exchange, or trade dil for zen to get them.
this is true but at the exchange rate as it is at the moment it will take a lot of playtime to gather the dilithium you would need to buy enough currency to buy an event item, it is unlikely that someone is going to grind that long if they are not prepared to do the same to play an event, far more likely they would just cough up the cash instead.
this might seem ok for income figures but not so good for event metrics, and they need to prove player numbers just as much if not more then income figures.
if all the devs were worried about was financial gain they would likely have put all of the event items in the lobi store a long time ago but they haven't as they would much rather players play the event then cop out and spend money instead.
on the face of it this might seem strange but an event that is not being played is a waste of space and this is likely to lead to less events and less events means less work that leads to less staff required and also less event shinny's to put in the lobi store anyway.
at the end of the day the devs would much rather everyone just play the event and not spend any cash buying event items then they would see more monetary gain from this.
