Unable to get STO to use DX11 even though card supports it

Hi Folks

Figured I'd throw this out incase anyone else has encountered a similar issue (and more importantly figured out how to fix it!)

I'm on Win 7 and running a Radeon Saphire HD 7850 GPU which is more than capable of running DX11. Except on the display page of the options I have no choice to select between DX9 and DX11; it just goes straight to a choice between full screen, windowed etc. The lighting 2.0 option is greyed out and when moused over says about it not being supported by my GPU. When loading I also get a message about tesselation not being supported which I assume is due to the game launching in DX9.

Am running latest AMD drivers (16.4) and use DX11 without issue in other games so as far as I can tell it's *probably* not a driver issue.

Any ideas?

Under OPTIONS : DISPLAY your Video card may be set to Auto. If you select the drop down you may then see options for Direct3D 11, Direct3D 9Ex, or Direct3D 9.

Yeah; problem is that option does not show up *at all* on the display page of the options menu so far as I can tell (see screenshot below of the relevant page of the options screen)

The first thing I would check myself it to make sure Windows 7 has been receiving regular updates and those are up-to-date.

Then you may want to try under Display options to: Reset all Options to Default Values, changing only graphic options would not include those. Still use this with caution as you may have to update some information you've customized upon login again--especially if you've updated key bindings. You are the best person to know what options you've customized or if you feel comfortable with this.

I would then click OK and logout, then exit the program and then re-launch the application. When the launcher load's you'll see an option text display near the upper right corner of the screen. Click Options, then select force verify and select OK as this will ensure all game files have been fully downloaded.

If you've never done this you can google / bing "STO force verify for a video". Note it may take a few minutes to perform this step, upon completion you can then try to login and see if any new display options are available.

This may be preferable to re-installing the game but does not guarantee a different outcome. Most video features or options are presented to the operating system by the driver who then provides those to the application layer.

okay so I am still having this issue (and now getting the launcher popup saying my pc doesn't support dx11 etc etc). Except for the minor detail of being able to run Final Fantasy XIV in DX11 mode without any problems.

For reference I am running Windows 7 (fully patched including KB 2670838 which is the update enabling dx11.1 support on win 7), a Radeon Sapphire HD7850 GPU with the latest drivers (16.12.1) on a fresh driver install and even tried a fresh install of STO which I have subsequently force verified. I've also manually deleted the gameprefs file from the localdata folder incase it was something in there causing the issue.

    Unfortunately the problem persists.

Anyone have any ideas at this point?

Video card drivers have been a problem for gamers for as long as they've existed. Sometimes you have to use an older version to get "all" games to run fine. You should also try completely uninstalling the drivers and then reinstall as sometimes stuff gets left over and can mess things up. I think using this tool and then reinstalling might help. http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Clean-Uninstall-Utility.aspx. There's some other tools out there that will do the same thing.

    This might be another one

Yeah, as mentioned above (though perhaps not particularly clearly) I did try a completely fresh driver install using the amd driver remover and still no luck.

Force DX11 in the launcher and forget about STO on AMD cards, they constantly TRIBBLE up with drivers: look around this section of the forums and you will be dreaded. The game can't detect a DX11 capable AMD GPU and it happens a lot.
You are not missing out much, though, except for annoying crashes.

Okay to update; with the aid of some lovely folks at Cryptic we found the problem; for some reason it appears that the game client .exe in the STO folder on my harddrive had apparently set itself to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP. If anyone is experiencing similar problems it might be worth checking incase you have the same issue.

I had a bit of a problem when Nvidia "GeForce Experience" offered a new "game ready" driver for my graphics card. For two days afterwards it was a total nightmare with the game giving me a black screen and then shutting off. Then after two days everything started working fine again (although the launcher just puts me into game without me pressing the "engage" button).

I suppose the game developers get the same notice ahead of time from Nvidia and Raedon when there is a new driver coming out, or in some cases they get the news late and so there must be a mad scramble to prepare the game for the new driver which is why in this case was the reason for the two days of difficulties. Maybe some drivers are easier to integrate into the system than others but that's just my theory since I'm not a game developer.

If anyone could shed some light on how this works it may be helpful to the rest of us not to hit the panic button when the game gets a little crazy after a new driver is introduced.

    Whitewarlock1,

Could you elaborate for me as to how you checked your .exe file for compatibility?

    Thanks!

    Assuming you have Windows 10...

    1. Locate the Star Trek Online.exe file
    2. Right click and select Properties
    3. Click the Compatibility tab
    4. Look at the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box.

If the box is checked, then it will be set to run in whatever version of Windows is being displayed under it.
