What scares me is the only reason I was able to login yesterday was cause I switched from 11 to 9 cause whatever they did to the patch screwed up 11 for me.
I must admit Ive been lucky and not had manny issues with the new 2.0 lighting. Well, except one really annoying one concerning Fed ship material 2.
My fed main flys the T6 Fleet Galaxy, and I always use ship material 2 as its the most canon like material. However since the new graphics update, the deflector on material 2 looks horrible. Its definitly the new lighting that affects it as its fine when I switch to standard lighting.
The deflector has a horrid black texture around it and almost looks like its burned away. Has anyone had the same issue, and if so, has it been addressed.
keep getting the blank screen sometimes it just goes blank and I can still hear the game running in the background, other times it just crashes to desktop with a direct3d error.
I have tried just about every setting I can think to change but nothing helps totally though some settings just cause it to happen more frequently.
even tried uninstalling and reinstalling + force verify, safe mode, full screen and windowed max, sometimes it happens every few minutes and sometimes it goes ages and I think I have fixed it then it goes blank again.
I have been playing sto for 5 years and never had any problems like this but since the lighting update I've had nothing but problems, it even took me twice as long to complete my daily crystalline missions over my characters during the last event because it kept crashing during a mission forcing me to start over.
BTW cant do the Gameprefs.Pref edit that has been suggested as it says "Access is denied".
this is really putting me off playing any story mission as I fear I will get half way through and have to start over and I am on a nice long break from work and was hoping to get some done.
if it starts blanking out during the winter race for the ship that will just be the limit.
Just looking at 'Access Denied' part has got me thinking. Have you tried giving it the permission to 'Run as Administrator'? If you don't know how to do this, Right Click the StartrekOnline.exe, Click on Properties-Advanced to get to it.
Gameprefs.Pref edit fix that has been suggested that but is causing "Access is denied" is a text file that is suggested you alter with notepad, it would probably not be allowed to be saved if the game was running in normal or as administrator as you would likely get a "file is in use" error.
according to the fix instructions you -
0) Close STO
1) Go to your "Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata" folder and open Gameprefs.Pref (edit: in Notepad)
2) Find the line "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9"
3) Delete Direct3D9, so the line now reads "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType"
4) Relaunch the game, see if it's fixed.
the most important step that they missed out here and the one that is causing the "Access is denied" error is
3.5) save changes to Gameprefs.Pref
without that you would still be using the unaltered Gameprefs.Pref but when I was attempting to save the changes I got the "Access is denied" error.
but all of that is unimportant right now as I solved the problem, the graphics driver I had installed was the most recent version but I found out the best driver was in fact an older version of the driver, installed that no more problems, yay.
just ironic that the problem with the driver only kicked in with the lighting update.

When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
