Well after the patching today, I logged in and it patched very quickly, went through the loading bar, then to the Bridge Screen and immediately went to the Select Character Screen. That is the first time that has happened in over a year. I usually wait at the loading bar screen, sometimes for almost an hour, but normally over 15 minutes. Then it states that the Connection to the Account Server has timed out.
No more. I did see some message during the actual patch that looked like it said something about mirroring some DX driver. Maybe it is not rebuilding Shaders or some such graphics objects that it was doing before.

Also, if you're having issues with it crashing before getting to character select. Double check to make sure you have "maximized" turned off in the launcher options. In my case that's why it kept crashing on my old computer. That computer CAN'T use maximized.

i've put the graphics settings to minimum, i log into the game and can only do so much before the screen goes black. the game keeps running but i can't see what i'm doing. i'm on a laptop with intel(r) hd graphics it is an old laptop and graphics are integrated. this is basically the only game i play and now it is unplayable, thanks.

initially I found that switching to the DX11 option still wouldn't allow me to to use the new lighting. However, I found this over on reddit that fixed the problem:
1) Go to your "Star Trek Online\Live\Localdata" folder and open Gameprefs.Pref (edit: in Notepad)
2) Find the line "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType Direct3D9"
3) Delete Direct3D9, so the line now reads "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType"
4) Relaunch the game, see if it's fixed.
I just used the find option in notepad for the "PrefEntry GfxSettings.DeviceType" part and deleted whatever was after it on the same line, which was the DX11 option I had set it to in-game. If you do this make sure you don't associate the file with notepad when opening.
Additional info for those who might still be having problems if the above doesn't work:
Logging in to find my game an ugly pixellated mess wasn't a good experience.
It took a lot of fiddling, two crashes to desktop before finally one of my friends discovered the renderscale fix and taught me how to apply it. *Sigh.* One day Cryptic is going to install or add something new to the game and its not going to cause widespread problems for lots of players, and the whole world will come to an end.
Some reason when I launched the game, it started reinstalling it... Anyone else get this?
Just to confirm; reinstalling, not patching?

When I use Renderscale 1.0 on DX9, I tend to get image trailing issues. I have tried to set my screen to Full Screen, but it doesn't seem to work. The only thing that works is Window Maximized. I don't know if this may be causing the issue. At the moment, I have dropped my Renderscale to 0.8 to keep things stable. I do hope this is fixed so that I can return to Renderscale 1.0. Please keep us updated. Thanks.

Thank you for this fix. I was doing the same.
One thing I noticed is that turning down the renderscale doesn't make the echoes go away, it just hides them....
If you've loaded up on Holodeck today to see the new graphics and think everything looks like a pixelated mess, it's probably just a settings issue.
Please enter the following in you chatbox:
/renderscale 1
You can also find this on the Display options panel under "Resolution Scale." 1 should be default, but there is a known issue that has caused many people's to be set to 0.4 or other lower numbers.
If you would like to see the new lighting, and think your card is capable, but "Lighting 2.0" is greyed out, ensure that your settings (on the Display Panel) are set to DirectX 11. DX9 can't run the new lighting.
Nice this worked nicely on my older Computers Video card. Had me worried there for a little bit

Yes. right clicking. Neither notepad or word come up as options to open it with. it just says i don't have the required software to open it. Running windows 7.

Idem. A nice addition!
However I want to ask developers when they will be able to adjust the maps now they agreed in release notes with people saying Lightining 2.0 it's too bright on same maps.
ESD is ruined by the flashing light and it's one of the main locations of the game.
Just asking for others because anyway my system cannot run such a graphical upgrade (it was at ten+ fps) and I had to pass willing or not.
And here we came to what matters for me since when I reverted back to good old lightning system I find it does not work properly as it did prior to the update.
Seems like the Lightning 2.0 update messed with the base old lightning system creating a mix of the two.
Even now maps don't look quite right, Starfleet Academy is more dark than it was before, like it is always in a cloudy day.
Seems like the extra brightness of Lightning 2.0 caused the old lightning system to look darker than it was.
Please do something, it seems like they moved Starfleet Academy from San Francisco to London complete with the bridge...
I still dream from time to time about using the Gateway to doff off-game in spare minutes as we were told
I'm using the new lighting but I always run sto in windowed mode so I can access my task bar and do other things during the loading screens.
The latest problem after the lighting was introduced is whenever I start sto the window is slightly off centered on my computer screen and I have to drag it an inch or so to the side and up to center it never had this problem before the lighting addition.

That's a temporal anomaly if I ever saw one. You appear to be experiencing a rather extreme version of the Manheim Effect.

keep getting the blank screen sometimes it just goes blank and I can still hear the game running in the background, other times it just crashes to desktop with a direct3d error.
I have tried just about every setting I can think to change but nothing helps totally though some settings just cause it to happen more frequently.
even tried uninstalling and reinstalling + force verify, safe mode, full screen and windowed max, sometimes it happens every few minutes and sometimes it goes ages and I think I have fixed it then it goes blank again.
I have been playing sto for 5 years and never had any problems like this but since the lighting update I've had nothing but problems, it even took me twice as long to complete my daily crystalline missions over my characters during the last event because it kept crashing during a mission forcing me to start over.
BTW cant do the Gameprefs.Pref edit that has been suggested as it says "Access is denied".
this is really putting me off playing any story mission as I fear I will get half way through and have to start over and I am on a nice long break from work and was hoping to get some done.
if it starts blanking out during the winter race for the ship that will just be the limit.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Just looking at 'Access Denied' part has got me thinking. Have you tried giving it the permission to 'Run as Administrator'? If you don't know how to do this, Right Click the StartrekOnline.exe, Click on Properties-Advanced to get to it.

After Friday's patch my laptop keeps crashing after a few minutes in QWW. I've been adjusting my settings, but no go so far. I'll keep trying though, unless someone other than the Devs has a solution other than deleting then re-installing the game...
There is an important announcement in the Galactic News Network section about upcoming changes to requirements for STO that may make a lot of the discussion here obsolete.
i see on loading launcher directx9 won't be supported in feb so will have to change to directx11 so all advice here is mute. on my laptop directx11 makes game look like 80's 8bit pacman game.

Exactly the same deal here.
This didn't work for me so I tried to put in -d3d11enable 1 and that seemed to do the trick for me.

Anyone here know how to get my Warp flash back? I see other ship's superluminal "boom" but not my own.
