Title is the question.
I have the galor and both Jem ships that are getting an upgrade.
Will the ones i own be upgraded? Or in another great Cryptic money grab, am i required to re acquire the same ships again should i so want?

Ergo, you're not getting one for free because you own the old one.

No?
There's your answer.
If you bought Windows 7/8 should you get Windows 10 for free just because you bought it before? Actually, yes and that turned out to be a pretty nice thing indeed.
It's digital merchandise. Cryptic can chose to apply whatever economic model they want. Regardless of which way they go, there is sense behind asking for an upgrade. See. these ships' automatic upgrade to T5-U. Free bumps have happened before, they're simply not happening with this transition.

Here's the relevant blog announcement (just for the sake of topic clarity, I'm personally fine with this outcome.)
You'll note that the topic of existing T5 ships is not addressed. You can infer that T6 versions will not be replacing their commissioned T5 counterparts but you cannot conclude that from the announcement. There is simply no information, which is very suggestive but that's all you can logically say. Hence why someone asked specifically. It's fine.

Your T5Us are still very capable ships. Keep that in mind.
Companies can choose to do this or not (in this case: no, that's fine), but the difference is very well established in modern business.
And this is something to strongly keep in mind. The difference is 1 boff seat and the option for specs. That puts you down when it comes to a min-maxed playstyle but it doesn't stop you from enjoying any piece of content (even elite difficulty) in STO.
If someone cares enough, the option to rebuy the ship is available but I don't think it's a huge expectation for players (the mechanics certainly aren't pushing for it.)

I suspect the T5's on the exchange will be devalued?
Take note of that bolded and italic part of the announcement, in which it mentioned that the tier six versions are replacing the tier five version of the ships in the infinity box. Where as if it was replacing all tier five versions they would not make that distinction in the announcement.

T5 and T5-U aren't the same thing either but you saw how Crpytic handled that. Whatever the specific justifications are, people are justified in asking about a similar (but, IMO, smaller scale) upgrade this time. It happens, fact, just not in this case.
And as pointed out, T5-U is perfectly fine to use in game. People don't need to upgrade to T6 in order to use these ships well. The amount of revenue then from rebuys is probably going to be pretty trivial. It's a niche of a niche (unlike the sum-total of all ship owners, which Cryptic lost out on when they offered all lockbox/lobi ships a free T5-U upgrade). Ie. it's something you can easily exaggerate for the sake of a forum argument. However, when it comes to justification this group is probably going to be very difficult to detect in-game (as a significant thing across the scale of the population).
Which may be why Cryptic didn't bother with the free T6 upgrade. The prospective benefit may not have justified the technical/logistic work involved (which may be significant, considering that the all important +1 boff seat wasn't part of the original T5-U upgade.)
I should also probably point out that I'm not arguing for free T6 ship upgrades. It's a little late now. What I'm pointing out is just the logic behind the question (which you seem to still have problems with. Take a step back and just think about the problem as a general, rather than a specific, thing. You might then see how it might look from another person's POV, leading them to pose the question.)

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how much you time you can spend thinking about the question. :P

For further examples of "own the original and get nothing when a new version comes out" I direct you to the T5 and T6 flagships.
Would I LIKE a new ship? Sure. Would I be happier to pay 10 bucks in fleet modules to upgrade my current T5 grand prize to T6? Oh yes. Am I willing to pursue the new ships from even footing as everybody else? Yes, I am. Because I know first hand how much fun the three T6-rereleases I want will be. If profit motive makes them move on it faster, great. T6 Tal Shiar Destroyer/Battlecruiser and Narcine Dreadnought Carrier nao plz.
Maybe the shield visuals will make you ship look like its made from sand. And the deflector look like a waterfall.
Another huge MONEYGRAB!

No mate. Lets be honest. Its the same ship, with slightly different boff seating and a console. Thats it. Its not a new ship, its an old ship, that got what lockbox ships should have got.
Do you think its a worthy lockbox ship, which are supposed to be the most expensive ships in the game? If someone already owns one of the old ones, that they paid good money for, you think its reasonable they have to pay for it again, because "command seat" and a crappy console?
And for all that, they cant even get the Jem Dread to work properly as a reskin. Cryptic's balls know no limit. They are shameless. They used the console launch as a platform to push this through with minimal attention.
And what does /thread mean? Are we on reddit now?
Thats a c-store ship, which is not even in the same ball park as a lockbox ship, but good try.
I asked a question, a perfectly reasonable question.
You didn't have to answer it.
But you did.
Why?
Because you are an STO forum TRIBBLE.
Same applies to anyone else that did the same. Quite a few of you weirdos, by all accounts.
So no, it is not the same ship. No, your current ships will not get a free upgrade, and yes, this is a money grab.

I know what it has and hasn't got mate, i owned a Galor since when it was still current.
Keep telling yourself its not the same ship if it makes you feel better about the game.
No matter to me.
