You have been assigned by Starfleet / Republic / KDF for a deep exploration mission that will take your far away from the safe borders of your sovereign. They estimate that you will be away for a long time and return to the Alpha Quadrant in 5 years.
You will be able to handpick your crew, get all the resources needed to make this missions successful, but most important of all:
You will have the honor to handpick the vessel that will make this journey possible.
This might be a bit of RP in a way, and might not be fit in the General Discussion. But as the prologue says; You are going away for a deep exploration mission for 5 years and will be able to pick the ship that will take you there and back again.
You can choose any ship that is currently available in STO and write a small explanation why you choose that ship.
I will go first:
Since Odyssey is the excellent choice, I will not choose that just for the fun of it.
I would choose the Guardian Cruiser.
It is designated as a exploration vessel and it his quite fresh from the shipyards.
I don't want to stand out as a warship, but instead use large ship with a design that' will not (over) intimidate strangers to believe that you are hostile.
It has the latest Starfleet technology, and it has intelligence seating that could be good for observation without interaction with unknown species.

It's design is proven for survivability tried and tested in the delta quadrant and against the Iconians. It has a balanced layout with more then enough tactical power to handle any possible threat and has enough science capability to study most things we could encounter. The ship has a decent flight deck and a larger/verstitile contingent of small craft for short term projects and support. While the ship is classed as a battlecruiser it has all the features that an exploration ship would need including a high powered communication system which can send and recieve data from starfleet command to advise on the progress, the power of this communcations array could be amplified with the use of relay satelites which could be placed on the flight deck till needed.
'Cloak >> All' when it comes to not making a mess that violates the Prime Directive or leads some new slavering horde straight back to the Federation's doorstep. Because all evidence is the entire galaxy has been HEAVILY seeded with warp capable and frequently belligerent races.
A small fleet of old bird of prey and K'tinga were choosen for the long journey
They are old models which were returned to service during the Iconian war.
Most of the crews were drafted from the military disciplinary barracks
Council arranged transfers of prisioners from Rura Penthe,
those with background in science and research were thrilled by the commute of their sentences
Wounded veterans of the Iconian war are offered positions as officers,
disfigured and crippled, most of them were discharged from their former posts.
May they find death and glorry in the journey ahead.
Several captains are potential political rivals of the counsellor
bourn on this journey to the undiscovered country.
A seat of the highcouncil is offered to the one who returned with the greatest treasure for the empire.
The option to have up to four frigate class vessels that can operate independently from the main ship is just too good to pass up.
With five vessels doing research and exploration one could cover so much more ground than with just one ship.
Furthermore the Sarr Theln is just a very well balanced ship that should be suited for long missions.
Second choice would be the Vo'Quv
Durable, science-oriented and up to four battle-cloaking scouts more than make up for its short-comings.
It should be noted, I run it with a white hull and not the default black. In this configuration, it looks more 'Starfleet' but it's also a large and armored ship. The fact of the matter is, combat effectiveness has to be a consideration in deep space exploration. While Starfleet doesn't advocate violence as a primary option, you never know who or what will be encountered in deep space and you have to be prepared for those that wish you harm. The ship isn't massively over intimidating when made to look less 'war like' but is still powerful enough to make people think twice before attacking it. Also, the cloaking device can help to avoid unpleasant engagements all together. It's a large ship but also designed to run with a minimal crew which can be helpful when using several landing parties to explore a large ground area or if space is needed to transport colonists or take on additional supplies. Of course, this would assume that I could allocate space on the ship for things like an Astrometrics lab and other stations that the default 'war ship' probably doesn't have.
If we're not considering ships from the 'JJ Verse' or not allowed to alter configurations, then my pick would be the Odyssey for the obvious reasons. Outside of the cloak it can pretty much match the strong points of the Intel Dreadnought. If I'm taking my crew out into the vast unknown for five years, I want a ship that's designed to make sure everyone comes back alive.
Every playable ship in STO is valid
Personally I believe that the only Starfleet ship built to do that would be the Galaxy and it's offspring.
For the Romulan's it would have to be a D'D class since it's a nice clean design and doesn't look that threatening, compared to say a Scimitar or a Mogai, unless of course it decloaks when your not expecting it
For the KDF, Vo'Quv / VoD'leh as already mentioned or one of the Bortasqu line for the 'oh hell what is that thing?' when it decloaks, plus the idea of the Klingon's NOT getting into a brawl is kinda hard to see happening.
Am I the only one who has a hard time telling how big a ship is when it's between an enormous dreadnought and a tiny pilot escort?
That makes it an ideal choice

^ Same.

which is bogus cause they had no way to resupply as they pointed out when the show started... then reality hit and they quickly disregarded all that and the ship and it's stores magically reset after each episode...
Android with photonic and pet cat... with an uppity computer ai
Thinking about it though, the Regent would be more ideal. It can dish out almost as much as it can take. This allows the captain to engage in the "why are they firing? hail them again" maneuver without being blown up. And, its a nice looking ship.
Structurally, the space frame is solid, just look at the beating it took in year of hell

So I figure I'll stick with that: a (slightly modified) Nimbus-class vessel, boldly going where no Saurian has gone before.
A balance of decent speed, sensor capability, crew capacity and defensive/offensive capabilities. Also, shes a beautiful looking ship
However, I cannot go on the 5 year mission. My ship just returned from a 6 month exploration of unknown space and she is back at Earth at the moment for a 4 month tenure assisting Starfleet Academy. Gotta give the cadets a chance to see a working starship as well as putting them through the ringer before they graduate
It's large enough for the crew, family and any visitors. Has a large area of either forest or islands, with a large view outside. Dos not look something that's here to conquer or look hostile.
Plus I got mine looking all psychedelic with the big color palette available for it! ^^
