Right after you follow the scent trail with the friendly NPC through the tunnels, a cinematic plays in which you encounter another NPC, this one an enemy. After the cinematic plays, you fight this enemy alongside your friend.
The bug is this: after the cinematic plays, everyone is invisible. Not cloaked, but some kind of problem loading in. Hits and such still register, and the fight can still be won if you can keep track of where the enemy is on the minimap - because that still works, too. After the fight is over and the cinematic plays, everyone reappears, and all of the damage numbers that would have appeared during the fight suddenly display all at once on everyone.
It's similar to the bug that happens in space when you're fighting and you warp in after a death or to another system mid-mission, but your ship never appears. You can still fly and such, but you can't see yourself.
