why is it that I've put 50+ hours into my character and then I go to log on today and my character is named badname100116017 after putting so much time into my character (i'm F2p) and all of a sudden my names bad, why was this not a TRIBBLE thing in the character creator? why did they have to let me play for hours and hours on my toon and then TRIBBLE him. it honestly turns me off this game, I've played tonnes of mmo's and never have I been name changed on anything other than a character creator if you don't want certain words used it VERY EASY to have that in the creator. instead you took a game I was thoroughly enjoying and just TRIBBLE on my experience. thanks...

And it seems, especially if your name is related to your forum handle, enough players reported it, and the GM felt that it was worthy of having the name changed.
I know of at least one other person who had this happen to him, and he went a lot longer than 50 hours before he got "nabbed" by the system.

i'm sorry didn't know star trek a show that hasn't aired new episodes in 10+ years was pandering to 5 year olds. who are afraid of the word d I c k... I mean I have toons with that name on guildwars, eve, WoW, but eh your the TRIBBLE genius napalm. not to mention the fact that there was no warning or anything on the character creator. and then they can just change my name to some TRIBBLE number without giving me the option to change it. that's not how normal people think or work. then again why would I expect an oxymoron like you to understand anything about society.
also I was just testing real quick and it doesn't block anything, and I mean anything! at least not on Xbox one and there's no text what so ever saying anything about names being inappropriate or anything at all just type in your name and your ship name and engage.
Of course you didn't read it, almost no one does, but you did agree to it and now you are mad because Cryptic is actually holding you to the agreement that you made of your own free will ?
Give someone else all your stuff and go play WoW or something..
Also, it's not about people being afraid of a word. It's called covering your corporate a** against potential legal issues from stupid, irrational parents who foolishly shelter their kids and special snowflakes who get offended by everything and anything.
idk if either of you read the TOS but I have them open right now and there is no wording what soever about profanity or inappropriate names all there is is a boilerplate we own all assets paragragh only place character names or names is mentioned at all. so...

> oh srry there is a mention of profanity saying they aren't liable for any profanity you may see in game... in other word people will make badnames and they aren't responsible for it and don't have to do anything about it. in other words there is nothing in the ToS at all about having inappropriate names in fact they cover themselves specifically for profane names.

with that post you just proved their point if you read the bottom 2 lines of it, personally i think your name was hilarious but I understand why it would get remove as some kids will play this game
Well, there's quite the difference between "D i c k" as a shorthand for Richard, and the same as a shorthand for other... generally perceived as offensive... meanings.
Therefore, to allow "legitimate" uses while screening against "illegitimate" ones, there is no primary filter for name creation, it is instead placed on the report system and the discretion of a GM to determine if a change needs to be made.
As to why that name has "escaped" scrutiny on Neverwinter, well, perhaps it hasn't been reported enough times yet to draw scrutiny, or the GM in charge of that check elected to view your name as "inoffensive" while the GM who did it for STO thought otherwise...
