What is "Space Boomer"? I am aware of its usage on ENT, but i take it to be a slang term and disagree with its usage here. Here i understand we are talking about civilians roaming space performing civilian occupations, trader, frieghter, pirate, vagrant, etc.
I disagree that should be in this game, performing work trying to survive like Farmville or Oregon Trail Settler is not fun or entertainment. No space battles, and they would have no reason or motivation to join our causes or adventures. It would be ultra boring. And with all the people complaining how underserved KDF and Roms are why would be want another faction for people to complain about.
Reminds me of the Star Trek Settlers of Catan board game.
A "commercial" faction - say with Ferengi, Tellarites and Orions as core species - would be an excellent idea. (I've said so before. Heck, I said so before the Romulans were rolled out.) It'd be something genuinely different from the other factions - not concerned with exploration or imperial expansion, just there to make an honest credit in a turbulent galaxy.
And you could plug it into the end game easily enough... the Solanae Dyson Sphere and the Delta Quadrant both offer huge opportunities for commercial exploitation (that Ferengi in the cutscene even says as much), and the Iconian War is (supposedly) a crisis big enough that everyone, military or civilian, would be drafted in to fight. (And if you were a civilian volunteer, it would actually make sense for you to be taking orders from Captain Kagran! - well, except where his orders don't make any sense, but that's a separate problem.)
I like this idea a lot. You would need to add a whole bunch of merchant-type ships - say, cargo haulers as the equivalent of cruisers, fast couriers in place of escorts, independent scouts and surveyors instead of science vessels - and there'd need to be some expanded mechanics for handling trade (it'd be nice if, instead of getting promoted when you level up, you could just buy your rank in the faction with dilithium or EC) - and, obviously, civilian ships wouldn't be quite as combat-effective as military ones (which might make it a challenge to play - and that might be a good thing in itself!)
Yes, there's all sorts of possibilities here. I doubt very much they'll ever be explored, though.

And that's what's so great about people. We don't all like/dislike the same things.
I pretend all my toons and crew are civilians. Starfleet is super lame.
"Space bomber" faction can be the next enemy
We are running out of aliens we can wage war on
So why not spacebomber flying around with omega particles
"Alalalalalalalalalalala"
