Some TOS Character renders for your enjoyment

Greetings Captains,

Jumping into the excitement of AoY, thought I'd share some of the TOS renders and maybe a note or two of trivia.

(Quick preface: these renders were made a while back and some of the parts and uniforms may be a little different in the final game version.)

First up, the Klingons. I posted a lot of background on another thread, but what started as a fairly small plan for an update and quick ranked faction turned into a robust set of diverse and unique costume assets that match the original source material very closely, while making it work for our game...even as free uniform options for the players. The biggest challenge was the sexual dimorphism in the uniforms - how to match the source, and still create a "look" for each rank that is readable in a game.

Renders: http://imgur.com/a/K31cm

Next, the Romulans. Like the TOS Klingons, some assets have existed in STO for years, but never as a game designed ranked group.
Render: http://imgur.com/a/O9Wko

Orion. There were basically two costumes featured in TOS: one a fairly elaborate and complicated lizard-like layered dress w/ what look like fabric spines, sequins, plates, and dangly fabric...and one more like a tie-dyed one piece bathing suit. Since we had very limited time and they wouldn't be a big faction in the game we chose the 2nd option.

Then, one of my favorites, the much requested Gorn. For the ranked group we took liberties inspired by the simple armor and patterned fabric. We even made it work w/ the existing Gorn assets - as seen in the example pic. Warning: Gorn nudity ahead :)

Renders: http://imgur.com/a/1CEMe

And how 'bout onesies? From the episode "Journey to Babel". Soooo many unique assets were made for that scene in STO to match the show, the internal joke is that's our most expensive level (from a production/development standpoint).

Finally, the Risa Retro Collection based on the episode:The Gamesters of Triskelion. Again, so much awesomeness from TOS to choose from and I'm glad we found a place for these crazy outfits.

This was a fun era to visit for us and we hope you're enjoying it just as much!

    Some great stuff useful to get a better reference for the colors. Thanks!

    Hm, it is fixed. I have the ridge jewels on my BOff. It's in head attach tech.

    Also, will we ever get the teletubbies Babel emissary robes as an unlock?

    Nice work.

    Dont mean to be critical but as far as the Romulans go i recall only two color trims used, the pink and blue i believe (or was it green?). And no ladies wearing helmets, as being a centurion guard was a typically male job (appearently) we only saw males wearing helmets.

    But overall love the work.

    Fix what specifically? The head jewelry? It's fixed and I saw a post about it so I'm assuming it's live already.

    Love 'em all! Excellent work :smiley:

    Are there any plans to make that female Romulan helmet and the colors used available to players? They're so more more vivid than we can get them right now.

    I love those new patterns for the Orion outfits, and that you made them available to use on our swimwear.

    The Gorn are just awesome! Can't wait to get my TOS character a Diplomacy Gorn and put them in the TOS Gorn outfit.

    This. The instant I saw the female Romulan NPCs wearing those helmets, I was like, "omg I want those for player characters".

    Love this post, crypticjoejing! Thanks for putting these costumes together; they're awesome!

    ETA: Re. the Romulan "department colors", which ones correspond to which?

    Pretty sure we only ever saw one female Romulan on TOS, ever. And as she was a commander, she wouldn't have worn a helmet in any case. So for all we know, there very well could have been female centurions who wore helmets, and we just never saw any. As for the rest, I don't see anything wrong with extrapolating more uniforms based on what we did see :)

    I have noticed the following issues with the KDF TOS outfits:
    • Only the short mesh sleeves are currently available for female Klingon characters.
    • The mesh sleeves use the wrong color block for tinting (they display the first color block, but the tint is based on the hidden fourth block, only accessible if you have certain other pieces in that group like the Terran Taskforce armor, which uses that block for the color of its lights)
    • Female Klingon characters using the TOS (that is, Standard) head can't use the "Tattoo - flair" option, although they can while using a Ridged (that is, the usual Klingon) head.
    • The TOS Klingon badges other than the dagger are unavailable.
    • I can't find TOS-Gorn options other than the head shape on existing Gorn characters. Only the regular 25th Century options are available for the hands, feet, torso, and legs.

    I know this is a bit off topic, but is there any chance the ENT MACO uniform could be given the Federation uniform palette instead of the off-duty palette it currently has?

    Love what you guys and gals have been doing. Everything looks great. I really like how the Romulan females are wearing the 23rd Century Romulan Uniform Helmet. Can our ladies wear it as well if we have the Uniform ?

    Thanks for posting this. You guys did a great job on AoY -- TOS was my first Trek and it was a lot of fun to wander around inside of it along with all of these characters.

    If the small percentage comment about the Orions was becuase its KDF, a little bit of effort towards that faction would go a long way tomending some fences with the KDF intensive players.

    They're based on rank, not division, but the render uses the mob rank names, not player-facing Romulan ones:

    Ensign = Uhlan
    Lieutenant = Centurion*
    Commander = Subcommander*
    Captain = Commander

    * Some departures from canon here, for readability no doubt. The Centurion and Subcommander Tal both wore magenta uniforms. Also, the green uniform is used by you and your away team when you're disguised as Tal Shiar agents (but your rank is also Subcommander).

    Please please please please let Player Orions have access to those orion costumes!
    I've been dying to have some canon/canonesque Orion outfits since the very beginning, and not just these silly Metal Bikini's which Orions NEVER WORE in all of Star Trek!

    Actually what I'd love to see is the Orion outfit from "ENT: Borderland", but it might be a bit too risque for STO.

    This would be an excellent opportunity to ask about unlockable "TOS Tellarite costume" after you complete Caleb IV. Where/what is this?
    I have the TOS Tellarite Head unlocked but i dont find a unique/different costume anywhere. I understand its not the cstore version of course but this "TOS Tellarite Costume" specifically was mentioned as an unlockable but nothing new appears.
    Thank you @crypticjoejing

    I believe the Tellarite costume is part of the Temporal agent bundle and costs Zeni rather than an in-game unlock.

    Yeah, the attention to detail on these TOS-era NPCs is nothing short of amazing. It's kind of funny to imagine Cryptic probably poured more money into making them look like they were made on a low budget than the actual low budget used in TOS.
