The economy is going to crash and burn, wealthy economy moguls will dry up overnight and the supply of lockbox keys and other chance boxes is gonna drop significantly. Of all the stupid things Cryptic has done this one is truly unforgivable.
A certain YouTuber did this thing with GTA5 - where he challenged someone to get as much in-game currency as possible within a certain amount of time. He then just said; f--- this; it's taking too long - I'll just buy it [micro-transaction].
He explained why and it boils down to this; Why farm while you can work for the same amount of hours and then buy some in-game currency that way? You'll probably get more worth out of your time, probably also less monotonous. Therefor, you'll have more fun and get what you want when you want it.
On the plus side, you get to support your favorite game.
I've seen several STO players use the "I'd rather flip burgers for 8 hours than farm for an hour" justification for this very thing. In the end, it seemed like they simply loved flipping burgers more than playing video games.
I ain't one to judge. If a man enjoys flipping burgers, let the man flip those burgers.

Heh. Kinda makes you wonder how all that wealth and those tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of keys and lock boxes currently sitting in banks are going to vanish for this DOOM! of yours to play out.
Yes, I didn't vote because it doesn't matter to me at all. I turn in contraband very infrequently as it is.
Kinda got the impression they were polling on the overall good/bad thing, not to you personally. Also, seems like it matters to you in some way, otherwise you wouldn't have posted in this thread.
Unnecessary. It will annoy a lot of people, but I don't believe it will have a huge impact on the exchange rate as the refining cap will remain the same. As a contraband farmer myself I can say this change won't affect me.
Refine cap doesn't even matter when someone has 20 - 40 alts contraband farming.
8000x40 = 320 000 refined dil per day
Dil Exchange @ 450 Dil per Zen =
711 Zen per day for these leeches.
All that dill you refined can be placed on the dil/Zen Ex and then consolidated to one character.
Refine cap has nothing to do with it.
Personally, I'm elated that they're finally shutting down these serial contraband farmers.
They're destroying the exchange rate for regular, non exploitative players.
Sorry but they should've done this years ago.
The exchange rate wasn't obliterated until they added in the Admiralty system, which gives copious amounts of dilithium to everyone, thus devaluing it.
The people doing the most harm to the dilithium exchange are those who bot/game the exchange, not people who just throw their stuff up there and are done with it. Limiting the amount of Zen you can buy with dilithium (per account, per day) would go much further to do what they're apparently trying to do.
Fair points. Especially agree with your "Limit the refinement cap PER ACCOUNT" But it wasn't admiralty alone that inflated the market, even before admiralty, probably around the time of DR, things were starting to spiral out of control.
Good points though, something to consider.
You are right. It inflated alot even before Admirality, especially with the Delta Recruitment event. That allowed many exploiters to create countless alts, leveling them via botting and harvests the account rewards from a single delta recruit.
Yes indeed this is a very good change, even if its very late tho. Was suggesting exactly this to Cryptic a year or two ago... At this time it wont bother the botters too much, or at least the smart ones wich diversified their tactics. It wont have much impact with the admirality and both Delta and Temporal Recruitment rewards in place
But this should be followed by massive bans on those exploiters, but not now, better right after Temporal Recruitment event ends, so they dont make farming accounts to dip on Temporal recruits rewards. And put some barriers like unskipable episodes and other failsafes to make leveling bots more difficult.
Because those contraband farmers, the "serial" ones, are doing only that, only contraband, with 40 KDF alts.
Well, when we don't have any hard numbers, it is difficult to tell, but I very much doubt that contraband only farmers are the main suppliers of dilithium to the exchange.
In the end they'll just substitute the "lost" contraband by prisoner missions. It'll take them a bit longer, but the contraband nerf will not drastically cut the supply from serial farmers.
Even so, its a step in the right direction. And we can always continue to add more and more safety measures (such as this limitation on contraband) in game to uphold the integrity of the Dil/Z exchange.
Perhaps the next target should be prisoner turn in.
A good suggestion.
Let's not leave them any leeway. Once they realize the Jig is up, they'll move on to another game that is less difficult to take advantage of.
Let's us continue to be vigilant, and make it harder and harder for these exploitative players to make a profit off of Cryptics hard work.

You're under the assumption that we're all teenagers in college trying to buy our way through an education. I understand that buying stuff you want is a form of instant gratification, but on the flip side [no pun intended] - why artificially handicap yourself for the sake of 'creating' more fun or 'sticking it to the man', because why pay for something if you can 'work' for it.
There's also a difference in doing dailies across a couple of characters and a person that just does it so he can max out everything each day to get the max amount of Zen daily, that's just insanity and not really what I call fun.
Socializing is also on it's own a reward. Seeing people and all that.
I think it is both good and bad, but that reducing the amount of dil you get from it over raising the cooldown would have been better. If they were going to try an counteract the high dil to zen exchange, it would have been better to add more dil based sinks to the game, such as new projects in the older reps that you could get ranging from just new rep-sets to even rep-unique ship and hanger-pet designs that have a high dil/mark/elite-mark/ec cost.

Im sure they will get around to nerfbatting admiralty dilithium as well, just a matter of time.

I agree, handicapping yourself for the sake of "fun" is silly. The quest for "fun" leads people to make all sorts of bad choices. Moreover, why work for something when it's freely given and even forced upon you?
Remember, no one buys the cow when the milk is free, but after a while, no one even wants that free milk.
On balance I think this is a good move. At the very least it shows that Cryptic still cares about a balanced dilithium exchange. Clap clap.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."

While im deffinitely not Mr. Cryptic i dont see this drying up the economy, unless im the only player on the server who has never gotten into this contraband farming.
Instead of making more ways of spending dilithium they chose more easy way: they decided to nerf dilithium income.
Not really, though. It only affects people whose primary source of dil was turning it in multiple times a day. Most of them are quite space poor, so in the larger scheme of things it isn't such a huge nerf.
That said, I can certainly see how those small-time folks with their small-scale view of things can see this as a serious game-changing nerf that affects everyone. I can see how from their perspective they're on top of the world, and this is a serious death-blow to their operations. Hopefully they'll gain a bit of perspective and learn from this change.

This is the easier. Instead off people using multiple alts just to farm contraband and do this four plus times a day. This just hurts those players/bots, whichever they are. It doesn't hurt the regular player that gets dil on their chars by playing them. Even without this, dil is still entirely to easy to get.
I think this will hurt some casuals and enjoyment. Let me use my habits as my example. During the week I have a job. So I log in once maybe twice during the whole day and run one or two characters a while. I have a stack of contraband because most of the time I am not trudging to the security officer for a turn in. But on the weekends I may play the entire day. And then I need to upgrade my gear. And thus need dil. Only paid every two weeks so on my off week I may turn in a few contraband so I can up my gear. And there is a lot of gear on a ship and five members of a landing party. Doing this as a 20 hour cool down. I think I could get more doffing and the admiralty system than that and be gaining in another section as well. So this makes it one less reason to see the out of the way security officers.

I'm indifferent to it. I don't run contraband for my dilithium anyways. If it levels out the exchange rate, great but I doubt it will have much of an impact.

There should be an option for "Irrelevant", Admirality is the new dil-farming method these days. I don't see this will change things at all.
Except people might just stop using their Klingons as contraband farmers.
Which I'm not opposed to either, when I play KDF I actually play the game. I don't farm contraband.
Freedom for Klingon farmers!
So let us also curb the dil rewards for Admiralty if people think its problematic. Lets get all of these loopholes closed.
Daily Dil cap per account on admiralty.
Another solid idea

The economy won't crash and burn.
There have been several threads on these very forums complaining the dilex price is way too high, that's because of an oversupply of dilithium, and the only thing to spend it on being zen for most players.
So less dilithium being available means the price should in theory drop, which is better for most players. More people willing to turn dil into zen, more keys or ships bought.
Keys will still be bought and lockboxes will still be opened. There will still be people buying with real cash as well.
I am neutral on this matter. Therefore, I have not voted.
BAD for people who needs Dil for things like upgrades and fleet projects or whatever else you want to do that requires Dil that does not involve the Dil Exchange. This means you need to spend a little extra time to get the Dil you want.
GOOD for players who trades in refined Dil for Zen in the DIl Exchange. The less Dil entering the market means refined Dil is worth more, thus the Exchange Rate decreased from around 490:1 last week to around 425:1 this week.
Also to be noted, simply adding another huge dil sink to the game will do absolutely nothing to dissuade Contra farmers who will completely ignore any and all "optional" dil sinks regardless.
A new fleet holding, wont even phase the full time contra farmers, they'll just continue hoarding, and ignore it.
It will only hurt the regular joe players who are not actively looking for backdoor ways to earn RL currency.
Asking for new sinks only serves to ignore the exploiters even further, as they will continue to operate in relative obscurity and with impunity.
Meanwhile the rest of us folks, will pay dearly for these new holdings. While the serial exploiters continue to live off the hard work of Cryptic.

Dilithium is worthless, hence the Dil to Zen ratio being so bad.
While this won't fix it completely, it will help to lower it to a reasonable level.
Break them in half. Literally. lol
Nice catch though chatty.
