Thanks to some of the other premieres around the world, word is beginning to spread about
Star Trek Beyond... and the words I'm seeing on r/StarTrek are 'overwhelmingly positive.' No links to that part, just in case they contain spoilers... you can find the articles/posts easy enough. The bottom line is: this is great to hear, and I think this franchise will have a monster week next week.
As for the future,
J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot aren't going anywhere, folks. The fourth Kelvin Timeline movie has NOT been officially greenlit... but Abrams and the team are already talking about it. He also said that Pavel Chekov won't be re-cast, and they will figure out a way to handle the character's absence once the fourth film is a go.
My hope is that people will give this movie an honest shot... and, yes, I'm mainly talking to the people who don't like Abrams. Some still won't, I know... although, I personally think that's a lie, and they'll just be closet Abrams fans.
But, this excites me to hear such positivity around the film side of the franchise, and STILL before we learn anything about the new series.
And, to the four or so people on here that threatened to leave the franchise because of more "JJTrek"... bye, Felicia.

My character Tsin'xing
As an alternative, if they were planning to do a fifth movie, write him out of the fourth, then once everyone's more ready for a new guy introduce him in the fifth.
I'd prefer it if they wrote him out of the story permanently. Maybe have Walter Koenig make a cameo as Prime Chekhov or just future JJ Chekhov if they want to have all the characters, but I really don't like it when characters are recast, no matter what the reason (age being the one exception).

It should also be important that whoever they recast doesn't try to imitate Anton Yelchin's performance, much in the same way Adam Lambert insists he'll never try to imitate Freddie Mercury in Queen.
He isn't an optional part of the series.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie
Your father was captain of a starship for twelve minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's, and yours.
I dare you to do better.
Give Chekov a great heroic self-sacrificial moment in the next one, then bring in M'Ress to replace him. Remember, he wasn't in the animated series
I agree, let Alt-Chekov go out with a bang, then intro a new character.
I'd love to see Arex be portrayed in a live action film, especially since he's supposed to have been one of Chekov's instructors at the Academy.
They already kinda-sorta had a similar version of him in Trek-2009...
(comparison)...
Please note I said SIMILAR, not exact.

Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

Arex, M'Ress, Xon (an unused Vulcan character that was written for ST Phase II), Ilia, Decker, and Saavik are all candidates that I think would make interesting replacements for Chekhov's character.
One of the best things about Star Trek is that the series is bigger than any one cast of characters, it is a tapestry of many overlapping stories with a vast diverse array of characters. If you pull Chekhov out of the story it doesn't destroy the overall product, but rather frees up space for other less well known characters to step in and have a chance to shine.
IF it will be all we get on screen from now on, that means it's a reboot.
I have more faith in pegg due to him actually liking star trek so i will give it a watch but jjs talk of having kirks dad coming back mean regardless of weather i like the third or not if hes involved in the 4th i wont see it.

Here's a review.
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
