I'm a casual player, but occasionally, when i've got a day to myself, I might do a bit of a marathon sesh. Otherwise, i'll put in maybe a few hours a week, then periodically I'll have a break for a few months. I do this for about 5 years now.
I would say 'no'. Unless your finances mean that $200 means little to you. On a Zen sale that $200 could instead be 25,000 Zen. Which would be alot more useful and would take the Stipend 50 months to get you to the 'break even' point. Lifetime made sense back in the pre-F2P subscription days.
Being LTS or gold member only has an advantage when leveling a toon. You get more inventory slots as you rank up, a ship token at RA (if I remember right?) and some other stuff. But if you have 1-2 toons, then you really would be better off buying those things as needed/desired.
Advice: DONOT take advice from anyone and make your own mind.
But you just said not to take anyone's advice. So following that, they shouldn't listen to you about not taking advice...
But really, that's a stupid thing to say 'don't take people's advice'. You should take people's advice, give it thought and weigh it appropriately. Make an informed decision.
If you asked this question in 2010 or 2011, then it was definitely worth it. Now it is not something that can be easily answered by others. The 500 Zen Stipend requires you playing for 3.3333 years or 40 months for you to get your money's worth. Then there is the various Veteran Rewards and Lifetime Rewards. I would suggest looking through the various rewards and see if some of them are worth it.
In 2010 or 2011 no one could know it was worth it, either. Doom proclamations were around since forever, but reliable predictions seem pretty much impossible for us (Cryptic and PWE might have another view, since they have more data, both for this game specifically, and for their MMOs in general). If anything, one could try to argue based on past performance - in that case, we can expect the game to continue for many more years.
But only in hindsight will we know the truth.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
The alternative is to sub for a month, to get char slots, bank slots etc. Most of these things stay when you unsub. When you roll a new character you have to sub again. I have done it in the past. You can also buy the stuff, char, bank, ship slots etc, straight from the Zen store. You have to do it on each character you roll, if you want 'equality' on your characters. When you delete a character, you throw away things you have bought.
I did buy a lifetime sub, because I wanted it of course. Let me say the benefits for me.
- three pretty good ships, with an extra skin, T6 and T5
- slots, char, ship, bank on each character I roll.
- 500 Zen each month
- 3 shuttle crafts
- higher EC limit. I can now sell expensive stuff.
- all veteran perks in one go.
As I said, for me it is a good bargain. In fact I have subbed for about 14 months. After that, it is a free ride. Anyway, can't say I don't have fun with my money from the start.
