Finally, they came up with something to replace the end-of-lifecycle-all-lockbox-drop-event. The infinty lockbox is an all-in-one lockbox that lets you chose the ultra-rare ship, the grand prize, the T5 ship, the trait, the console, the weapon type and the BOFF manual you want. It will help getting prices of many items down to a more reasonable level. But it will also make opening lockboxes in between such special events very unattractive.
None of the old lockboxes will be available in game anymore. Instead, the infinity lockbox prize table is gonna be updated with every new lockbox they release.
So what do you think? Good or bad idea?

I hate lockbox spam, so anything that saves them clogging up my inventory and making it harder to delete them all, is a bonus!

This isn't either sarcastic, or a dig, but how do you figure it will be more expensive for anything? I can only fathom that every rare module will be cheaper, and even those items which are less desirable will be cheaper. (I expect a channel to form up where people can request what pops out of a box after agreeing to a price from someone holding an Infinity reward pack.)
Lockbox revamp! Now that's what I call meta.
I imagine most people will go with the easier approach of checking the exchange to see what has the highest price, and choosing that, rather than go into a chat channel and take bids from people who want other things. With the resulting reduction in supply, those less popular items will jump in price.

That's right. The launcher says Infinity lockboxes are now available.
The only effective difference is you choose which box to open after rolling the RNG instead of before. It will not "make some items even more astronomically expensive" nor will it "make opening lockboxes in between such special events very unattractive."
But of course it will spare people having to suffer a bazillion different types of boxes cluttering their inventory during the old lockbox event.
My expectation on exchange prices is we'll see a normalization within each prize class - cheap ones will come up as the old stock is cleaned out and not replaced, while expensive ones will come down as it becomes easier to acquire them as by-products of your main interest.
This way... we can do away with that clutter, and make it a bit easier for everyone to zero in on what they want without having to try and remember which box had what.
Also with the Vorgon Escort we might see a bit of a spike in demand for Phased and Destabilizing Tetryon.

You open a box and get a item that is BOUND to character until you select the item you want... what you select is not what I need so... what I need becomes RARE... it becomes SUPER RARE. The price will jump up.
You're assuming that no one will sell ships anymore.

Also, what about the faction-triad things like Traits (ex. Reciprocity) and consoles (ex. Metreon Gas Canisters/Repair Platforms / Projected Singularity)?
More importantly perhaps for Cryptic and many future players - it will solve the question how the console players will get their hands on stuff like Plasmonic Leech or prized ships from earlier lockboxes.
I think it's a good thing overall.

Remember the drop chances for unique ship, console etc. will remain the same. You just get to choose, what to claim. nothing more.
Considering how many of my toons use carriers, I'm not sure who to give it to.
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though.
JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.
