As it has been pointed out. The Energy Credits should be the most useless currency we have. Sure they work in the Federation. But in the Neutral Zones, the Empire, The Republic, Alpha Quadrant and Delta Quadrant, Gold pressed latinum would be the primary for of currency. So it's not about needing another currency. It more about using the right currency.
Quatloos are never going to be a uniQue or reQuired Quality Qurrency in this game.

I agree, it should be added to the game. Too little currencies. ST is, among other things, about diversity.
An even better idea is to change the Exchange so that items can only be listed for quatloos instead of EC. Thus all items should be delisted on the Exchange and returned to the captain who listed it.
So how can we get quatloos? Simple, every ground enemy will drop 1 quatloo that can be picked up. A boss will drop 2 quatloos. Therefore, in a ground queued mission the first player to click "Take" will get the quatloo(s).
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"

I remember a long time ago they made a big deal about dropping a bunch of currencies from the game to make things simpler and easier to understand. Then they later added a bunch more currencies to make things complicated again ...

That happens in pretty much every game where Devs go on a rampage trying to "make things simpler for the players" without realizing what the multiple currencies are ACTUALLY FOR in game design terms... Usually on the second or third try they figure it out, which is better than the initial spread but still meets the inescapable need to not have your most brokenly easy/rewarding activity flood out every other portion of the game.

Just trying to put a different spin on things to "spice up" competitiveness in STO.
Oh, and the drop rate of 1 or 2 quatloos was inspired by ESO.
absolutely not - we have WAY too many currencies as it is

I would love to see them implemented. I would love if they were used almost exclusively for betting and could only be gained by winning bets.
I do not think it is likely to happen.

In honor of JJ-Trek coming to STO how about monetizing Lens Flares?
