Oh yeah, we were taking fall damage from the ramps even before they fixed the speed boosts. It just wasn't all that noticeable. Now it's in the hundreds instead of tens that we lose.
Still, I'm getting the hang of it. Literally and figuratively *Amused*
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
First of all: yes, a finish line could exist, and the problems would be similar. I do believe that complaints would be worse though.
Then: if you generally don't like the rules of the race and would prefer them otherwise, that is a fair point. But I don't believe that there would be major changes in who wins races and who doesn't. Yes, I too would like that jumps would give a benefit instead of a disadvantage, yes, I too would prefer closer control of who leaves the track, but rules are rules and you need to adapt to them if you want to win the game, even if you think they're stupid, even if they are. So it is not a race to cross the finish line first, and the decision whether to try for first or go save and approach the second flag is part of the game - how much do you like a gamble?
Then: I am by far not the best racer, but I win my fair share (probably more often than not, though I do not count), so maybe I can help some struggling:
1) Avoid jumping. A perfect run for me has two jumps, a bad one three. Also the "jump to stop and change direction trick", so beloved in the winter race, slows you down too much.
2) Ignore the race track itself. You have to steer really far of to get DQd - I veer left or right all the time and haven't had it happen, until reading this I didn't even know it was possible.
3) Ignore the animation of your toon and the board. You're going with the same speed straight on, no matter how it looks, as long as you press forward (and have reached max speed after acceleration).
4) At the finish, learn when to jump off and jump off. You will hardly have a chance to get a flag while on a board. Also I found that at least for me, smashing F is not the answer, but calmly waiting for the prompt and then just pressing it once but thoroughly. (WIth smashing a key, not every stroke may register, you can try it out in Wordpad or similar applications)
As for the race itself:
Before the race is off, activate your floater for a second to get it to "speed", just around the "get set" mark. It looks silly, it feels like an overly nervous teenager on his first date, but it helps.
Start heading directly for the left rocks under the arch and get there in a straight line. You will leave the track right and left, but not get a DQ, also the arrows have no collision detection, don't worry about them.
Where the track divides, take the left. Actually, even left of that, jump over the shallow outcrop left of the ramp. (Try to get to the left of the rock after the arch to ease the angle). Sometimes you won't make it, then the win is gone.
Between the ramp on the beach - around the Ferengi - and the actual beach there is a small strip of water. That is the fastest option here and you can allow yourself a bit of sand under the board without being thrown off (but keep close to the water)
After leaving the grotto area, there is a long straight - a good time for a look at the minimap how far you're ahead if you're ahead, so how much risk you want to take.
At the sharp turn in the west with two ramps right and left of a rock following, try to pass inside of the inner ramp. This needs you to for once not use the shortest line but come from a bit outside with a wider turn. But don't overdo it, if you realize you can't reach it comfortably, take the ramp - falling off halfway up the ramp is the worst option.
At the final turn leading to the home stretch, again ideally don't use the ramp but the outcrop inside of it.
Point your board directly towards the flag and get ready to descend in time. (Most of the time at this point I am ahead far enough so I don't have to worry if I keep my cool or far enough behind that I will get participation marks only anyways. If it is close - all the merrier, although I lose the F race more often than not)
Most of all: try and see what works for you. Look at what others are doing who are ahead of you and learn. And don't do always the same if it doesn't work and then complain about the badly designed rules. You may not like it - fair enough. It may not play to your particular strengths - fair enough, but then: why should it?
But the most important part is: if you don't enjoy the race, don't do it, monkeys are ugly anyway, rep marks can be acquired in multiple other ways, and your time should be worth more than doing a chore you don't enjoy for less than adequate rewards.
You can of course make your opinion about the race public if you don't like it. But don't whine or scream, don't treat it as fact instead of just your opinion. If you start swearing or insulting, you're taking it too far.
Very good valuable points...should be put as a sticky IMO.
There shouldn't even be flags in the first place. You should simply place based on when the game records you passing through the last posts. The flag grabbing is clumsy and extremely poorly implemented.

The flag thing has already been discussed to death. So let it be, it ain't changing.

Speaking of which I still have two more toons to get tags for. Let's see what hilarity ensues while they race.
