While he likes a dark, moody environment, he always felt that it was just a little too dark before.
Sorry, but not this time.
They seriously need to redo some parts of the lighting FX of the monitors, because it's waaaaaaay too bright. I don't mind seeing new and better light effects, but I do mind getting my retinas damaged and suffering from headaches due to an excess of artificial light.
Interesting that I never noticed how the grid pattern crosses the whole of that right viewscreen before. It's obvious under the new lighting.
I do agree that's a bit too bright. Looks like I'm going to have to turn down my brightness and gamma in the game even more.
I'm not wild about these lighting re-do's. They really wash out the colors AND fine details in the environments a lot, and personally, I feel that alone detracts from the Trek feel & makes it feel more...generic game-y.
I really hope they put a toggle in for this, because I think I like the lighting the way it is presently, and will keep it.

Well, we've got a bit to wait for them anyway. The PC won't be getting the graphical updates until next season from what I've heard.
Is it just me, or are alot of the Before picture looking better than the After pictures? The lastest After is all washed out and details are gone. The Before is a bit dark, but the After goes too far the other way. Unless we're going for the JJ-verse excessive lens flare effects?

It's not just you. I was thinking the exact same thing. Makes you wonder whether the before and after photos are getting some re-touching to emphasize the difference or we're about to enter a new era of playing the game wearing sunglasses. Hopefully if the latter is the case there'll be some in-game settings available to adjust things to taste.
This last before and after the current one looks better. Just the after portion looks like someone turned on a floodlight and blinded me and the consoles look all hazy from the shock.
I'm just hoping something soon will peak my interest but so far as a mostly KDF player when I play I'm not really finding any of these upcoming things interesting at all.
this week is prefer the "before", "after" is really too bright and shiny. did you have post-processing enabled when you took this screenshot?
I agree, another after shot that is washed out, has loss of detail in fact a very large loss of deatil and is overly bright. The visuals might be technically better from a specs point of view. But from a visual point of view the after shots are more of a graphics downgrade. Almost all the after shots have noticeably worse graphics. I am starting to get really worried about this graphics upgrade. The devs seem to be ignoreing feedback and almost all the after graphics shown have been way worse then what we have now.
I don't see how hazy shots with a washed out look and loss of detail can be called an upgrade.

No, it's definitely not just you. In the last two examples Cryptic has posted (IMO) the 'Before' picture's are better looking then the 'After' pictures. More lighting doesn't equal 'better' - it's what you DO with the lighting; and sorry just going overboard with the lighting sources (which is what they're constantly doing) doesn't make your game look better. It makes it HARDER to actually look at. (YMMV)
Oh, and IMO the 'film grain' effect for the23rd century AoY content is ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. <--- And no I don't feel I'm being mean here - again, it probably sounded great/fun on paper; but the implementation is GOD AWFUL - and I really do wish we had the ability to just turn it off.

Another Before shot that is WAY better than the After shot. Come on DEVs, GET A CLUE! Kill this "lighting upgrade" project. Every shot you've shown proves that it's a massive downgrade. Don't waste any more time, money or resources on it, just pull the plug. It's dead, Jim.

as for the lighting yeah its TRIBBLE, it looks to bright and the details to muddy or hazy, its asif they turned on lens flares or something..hmm
I as a primarily KDF player am a bit concerned everything will get a lot more orange. I prefer red and black. Orange can look really good at times and in this latest before/after makes a lot of things that are sources of light look a lot better. Though I would definitely prefer it if orange did not appear on things like ships more than it already does. Basically all I am saying is: its fine and in some cases really good to touch up with orange on some stuff but don't overdo it. A little on things like starbases and satellites is okay though (looks good on the ones already in game). Maybe if some new ship looks good with orange thats okay (on ateleth it looks great). But probably as a customisable color region (though for ateleth that is not needed).
However I definately prefer darker environments KDF side (more like the before screenshots). I think lighter in some places is okay (e.g. where appropriate in missions). But I definitely would prefer darker lighting in Qo'nos, Klingon Academy and Klingon shipyard (where I am located a lot).
In the screenshot the chest peice looks less reflective. It looks really good in a different way. But it would be good if the reflectivity of some things could be toggled back on (if that isn't a lot of trouble to implement). Or perhaps its just the angle and light that has made me misjudge its reflectivity.
The door (surrounded by me with yellow) lacks its red and black style. Which I don't prefer as much. However on some objects e.g. the main cylinder generator thing, the more goldish single color look is fine and sometimes looks better than the before screenshot. At the top of the cylinder generator thing where the really bright red and orange lights are: the orange looks a little too different from the red. I think I would have preferred it to stay red consistently throughout. On the Klingon storage container, I hope it does, orange on the bright light animation there would look weird.
The generator center piece thing (surrounded by me with red) I really liked colored red. Of course the orange lights on other parts of the generator do look much better than the before screenshot so
The exhaust grind (or whatever it is) (surrounded by me with black). I really really really don't like the orange here. I much prefer the one on the before screenshot. Of course it does look more TOS (for those TOS fans; I personally don't like TOS art as much as 2409, although I do like the TOS art in Spectres (the devidian featured episodes, http://sto.gamepedia.com/Spectres)) and has a certain underlying feel that is more "higher quality art" behind it. But I still much prefer the red one. Please no TOSing 2409 Klingon though.
The rust disappearance on the console is fine (the rust looked a little low quality). But does make the console appear a bit too light (though its fine, not overdone, its in the "matches" (as in contrasts/meshes well) range, but not my personal ideal). Though I mean "clean" (non rust) Klingon is fine. I think both "clean" and rust should stay. But never replace one with the other gamewide. And don't change visual styles of Qo'nos. Although tacofangs mentioned that they would like to redesign Qo'nos, perhaps then a slight style change would be better, but I really like the current look, I am scared style changes would make it look worse. I actually like the newer consoles better as a whole though.
This weeks "After" is awful! So much detail is gone! The columns in the before had some great sculpted details and the same column in the after is so bland and boring and what details there are are vague at best. Sure lighting is good but at the cost of losing intricate details it just isn't worth it! Stop the madness Devs! Leave the details that actually make the setting believeable alone! You are just making it look like a cheap low budget cartoon now.
The new lighting seems to only work in Fed settings, all the pics we have seen so far from the much more coloured Klink and Rom areas have been a bit of a mess, far far too bright and washed out.
The control panels in particular seem to be set to kill and there are so many overly bright light sources that shadowing and contrast have been mullered.
Oh and will the new lighting effect the player flashlight in any way? It seems odd that we can have torches today which are so powerful you can use them to light fires (I'm being literal, you really can!) yet in the future they struggle to be much more useful then a bicycle dynamo lamp?
https://s32.postimg.org/e548ufe6r/Graphics.jpg Pretty much shows everything wrong with the new graphics. Lots of loss in in the background objects, washed out look, overly bright displays creating a further washed out look on the nearby objects and it looks to me like the new graphics have made bump mapping graphics worse. I wonder if the person working on the lighting has there monitor colours correctly collaborated,.
The real payoff on the graphical updates will be when they get used to the tools and the effects and design NEW maps to take advantage of them. Just wait...

Given these screenshots are supposed to show how well the artists and designers 'know' these tools - and have supposedly been asking for such 'improved' tools. Sorry, NOT impressed; and I don't think we'll see 'better' lighted new maps down the road. YMMV.
It's like expecting these Devs to know/understand how to balance this games weapons/powers after six years. it ain't happened yet and I have a feeling these 'graphical updates will see this game turned into one LASRGE visual mess. I mean these are the same artists who are proud and patting themselves on the back regarding their crappy "makes the TOS faction look like A$$" 'film grain' effect. <--- If these so called 'artists' thought THAT was a good use of there development time/budget - I have zero faith left with any of their judgements.

The "Before" shot is vastly better than the "After". Consoles are way to bright to be useful on any military craft, and the details are getting obliterated. We know from all the source material, movies and episodes, that Klingons oppose bright lighting unless you're the subject of a trial, so please, please revisit this concept, if not outright abandon it.
As for the Starfleet HQ shot, NO ONE in a space habitat wants unfiltered sunlight streaming into their station. The shadows end up being far to sharp for planet-born aesthetics, and raw unfiltered UV eventually damages your hardware.

this week "after" is really good, the lighting and the shadows are more realistic. nice work
Again, here's a situation where in context the lighting looks worse.
The BEFORE looks like a room taken right out of TOS - colors, etc. all look like the way a TOS set was lit.
The 'After' doesn't make it look like something out of TOS at all. More shadows? Yeah, but who cares when it makes something you're trying to recreate an aesthetic for look nothing like said aesthetic?

Is it me or is a HUGE amount of detail being lost? In the Dronza station the tables had a neat little light on the edges and a nice crisp edge like a real metal table has now the detail lights is gone and the edges are well soft and fuzzy for lack of a better term. I noticed a huge loss of deatil in the previous Klingon before and after as well. These new lighting things are muddy as far as detail goes. Is this only going to port to Consoles? I hopes so as this is losing a huge amount of realism on PC's. When you start muddying the details for the sake of lighting gimmicks this really shows a misplaced sense of what is important. Fancy lighting does not trump details!

^ Exactly! They are sacrificing detail for questionable lighting effects! I can understand this if it's staying on the Console side given they have rather fixed and limited resources as far as memory and processor power goes and the console jockeys are used to cartoonish graphics but to throw this on the bread and butter side of the game is wrong.

My thoughts exactly! The first time I played this episode series and got to "Everything Old Is New", I felt like I had stepped right into a TOS set and the contrast, lighting, colours, etc felt perfect for the episode theme.
I'm very happy with most of the lighting improvements that we've been shown, but this one is disappointing.
I think the significant contrast differences between the computer displays and the console backgrounds are especially disappointing when compared to like http://i.stack.imgur.com/lKwxP.jpg
Hopefully when we actually get to move around and explore these environments, things will look better.
This is the worse graphics update I have ever come across for a MMO. The after shot has a nasty haze, graphics distortion on areas that looked better and smooth in the before shot and those are some of the worst shadows I have seen in years. Why are the devs ignoring all the feedback? The graphics are technically better and more realistic but they look horrible more of a downgrade.
Did they get the July 15 before and after photos mixed up and reversed? The reason I ask is that the loss of detail in the photo labelled after is so dramatic that surely it must be the before photo...
