Check out our latest graphical updates coming to Star Trek Online for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Our new deferred shading and light probes change the face of lighting in game!
There be ghost there.
Some "people" appear in one picture but not the other. need to call the ghost busters for this one.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
These changes are awesome, but am I the only one that notices what seems to be fog in the background? That has me concerned a little ... I didn't mind fog in the N64 days, but now it bothers me ...

That's actually The Mist. We're currently talking with King about removing it.
Are these effects/lights already in place with the new TOS Episodes on TRIBBLE?

That second picture (single map with a ton of stuff just tossed in there in a grid formation) reminds me of The Matrix
- Operator here. What do you need?
- Props... lots of props.
The changes are amazing and I can't wait to see this eye candy finally hit PC! I'm also curious how the environment artists will work with these new goodies. Big thumbs-up!
As long as they don't go too far with any lens flares (kidding ^^).

The images with the new lights are probably a separate map with them installed. So the NPCs would be wondering in different spots.
Seems some people need to be educated in the subtle art of sarcasm.

Didn't they used to have the lighting effects in the game before hand? I seem to distincly remember during the first year of ST:O with it's random map generation and exploration clusters firing phasers and watching the orange glow on the saucer section of my ship. I was really impressed with the lighting that was transitioned.
Just lately ( About a year or so ) I've been wondering to myself if space combat in ST:O has been looking progressively worse since my initial foray into space.
Wow, I wonder how this new lighting system affects existing and future Foundry projects. Seems like the lighting is very map-specific. By definition, Foundry maps contain lots of arbitrarily placed objects that could TRIBBLE around with the lighting.

Awww... it sounds like a fun place to go for target practice.
I don't know but I think they got the titles for the screen grabs switched for this weeks notes in regard to interior shots. The After labled grabs look worse then the Before labled grabs. Lots of little textures gone in the floor panels look kind of smeared instead of neat details where the seams are. Less detail on the faces and so on. I really hope the labels were switched if they weren't the after is a step backwards.

They said they are changing the kits and stuff in the post, so I'm going to assume it would only take a matter of copying and pasting things from the main game to the Foundry. However, since the entire lighting system has changed, if you based anything on a certain lighting or mood, you are now going to need to adjust that.

Glad to hear that, Trendy! That Mist is the main reason I like the before picture better. The new lights are great, but that obscuring Mist does nothing but hide the other artists' work.
It's the same with this week's Before and After. The reflections are nice, but overall it looks like the main shange was maxing out brightness, and minimizing contrast. Not good, it just looks washed out.

Guys...the Mist is a thing from a Stephen King book of the same name. it looks like a couple people got it but yeah...thats what she meant. it was a joke. and i'm pretty sure it actually has to do with depth of field or "Screen space ambient inclusion" whatever that is. which are options that can be turned off.
Wow, that means "War is Good for Business" is returning to STO after a hiatus in the Klingon War chapter? That set is definately from the lost episode which I loved to play.

You all need to take a little closer look at them, I noted that the Nimbus scene: cat people moved, game table lowered and moved closer to Leeta and her outfit made shorter. I will be taking a closer look back at the other scenes to see if they changed/updated other scenes. Plus, I think all objects are not looking better in some scenes, but overall most things are looking better with more detail and depth. No, ghosts just changes or people moved out of the scene.
It is about time this game got a little more shininess and polish to the archaic graphics engine that this game uses. My only concern is how this is going to impact the graphics issues that people are already having, like AMD driver crashing issues that have been known issues for months but never fixed for more than a week. I would personally rather play a working game on max settings (because my system can and easily) than have to reduce certain elements like Dynamic Lighting, shadows, and so on, because PWE can't or possibly won't fix some issues that plague this game.
"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them." -Thomas Marrone
Yeah, I've been thinking this entire time you have had the before and after images switched since the beginning. The way you have them listed, the Before looks a lot better to me than the After. (Well, aside from the ones where you have it so dark in the Elachi mission in the Before picture. I've never seen that mission so dark)
Then again I dislike and never use Depth of Field, Bloom or Ambient Occlusion.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
They are bringing graphics down to the lowest common denominator, Consoles.
I get it. It's coming regardless. It won't affect me by much. I don't play STO for effects. Dumbing them down is at most a mild irritant.
But they are not going to attract the children of trekkie fans or young adult trekkie fans this way. Yes CBS is suing a better attempt than their own to reboot the series. This is a vain hope to minimize projected future computer / network system load that will not happen. There is not going to be an explosion of young people coming off Minecraft to play STO and look to Foundry to make their designs come true.
I hope they will not walk away from support for better quality systems. I ran this by my thirteen year old son - I've tried for awhile to hook him with STO. This approach may yet work for Cryptic, but honestly I can't get the kid interested in STO and we created his account in 2012. He likes Fallout 4 and the new mods.
Dumbing down STO graphics isn't for kids like my son. It's for Cryptic. Consoles are always a dumb down port. No matter CBS attempt at a reboot kids like him don't think of ST as anything other than a distraction from what they want to do.
Final truth: Young kids learn about ST from the older folks around them. Older folks are not for the most part console-first users. Another decade / half-generation, just maybe.
My first console was in the late 1970's so yeah...still love consoles. Btw 6 more MMOs are slated for consoles this year alone. The road has been paved research you haven't done has been done by people who have access to information you don't have. Devs talk to each other at Dev conference's. So you sir are inadequately informed...
Will we have to update our graphics cards with the update?

From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."
