But regarding the TOS expansion - I think that's one of the typical fundamentalist forum things. People believe there are countless of KDF or ROM only players out there, e.g. people that don't have Fed characters, or never play or buy anything for them. I think that's already wrong.
And even accounting for the ones that exist, even if they were large - the characters-by-faction numbers Cryptic puts out tells us that they are still a minority.
Well I don't know about that. But I do believe there are countless players out there who have one main character for which they buy things and never buy anything for alts. Probably even players who never even create alts in the first place. And sure, for most of them that's likely a Fed toon. But the faction restrictions aren't just a KDF/Rom thing. Feds can't get everything on one toon, either.
And even if they suddenly gave Klingons and Romulan access to the full suite of Federation ships, what is there to be gained for the KDF/ROM only players? They still don't get actual ships that fit their faction. They still don't get story content for that faction.
If they refused to fill up the holes in their roster with other faction ships even if they were made available, that's their choice.
And nobody gets any faction-specific story content anymore. Hasn't for years.
So even if Cryptic removed any faction restrictions, it does help the cause of the people that scream the loudest exactly nothing. The people that benefit the most are actually the people that already get all the advantages, because they finally don't need to bother with "stupid" KDF or ROM characters and fleets and what not and just take the KDF/ROM ships they like and play them on their Fed toon.
How much will it actually help to allow Cryptic to make more KDF or Romulan ships? Probably not all that much. The players that are really eager to play such ships probably already have their Rom or KDF alts.
Cryptic will make as many KDF or Romulan ships as they think is profitable and no amount of forum screaming is going to change that. Removing restrictions will benefit everyone who wants to play a single character without losing out. And I'm not the slightest bit interested in the "faction uniqueness" rhetoric. If Cryptic had originally allowed players to just buy the KDF/Rom ships on their Fed toons instead of making "stupid" factions, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.
Although I do imagine selling them KDF/Rom ships to the majority of the playerbase (=Feds) might improve sales a bit.
This is why the two new Temporal ships being cross-faction is so interesting but I doubt they do it again it's only happening for practical story considerations. I mean 9-packs probably make more money and are just copy-paste stats with unique skins. Science ships never sold well though so a 9-pack would likely bomb.
This thread has made me ponder something... Why do KDF/Rom players so often hate things written for them? I don't personally experience that problem, but I often hear it discussed on the forum. One thing that occurred to me is that it's an application of the old rose-tinted glasses thing. People see what they want to when they remember things from the TV show.
Written for the KDF / Romulans? When was the last time that happened? I'll tell you when.
LOR in Summer 2013.
Kind of hard to judge writing for new KDF & Romulan missions when Crypitc was quite happy to stop faction-specific missions 3 years ago. What we have since then are Fed-Generic POV missions. All they did was swap talking head portraits with random replacement of "Admiral" for "General" for KDF. For Romulans, they don't even do that.
As for the Klingon story missions, those are the only Star Trek styled ones in this game. The actions of the Klingons in these missions are believable from how they were shown in the shows. The Federation and the Romulans, OTOH, well...

They make a lot less sense when played by an Orion...

Good point. I RP'd a lot of my way through those KDF stories with my Nausicaan, essentially shouting at my screen:
Heh, I guess that's part of why I loved Nimbus on my KDF dudes. I used an Orion and a Gorn. No ranting about honor required. Orions are fine with using the sneaky approach.

"KLING-ahn, YOU PLAY DOM-JOT?"
Wasn't that immersive.
