Meaning behind your ship's name and registry number

stoltsstolts Member Posts: 482 Arc User
Excluding those that just used the random name generator or just randomly picked one themself... I am curious as to why people chose the name for their main ship and or chose a specific number for the ship registry.

I'm a theme player and mine draws from within the canon of Star Trek universe rather than outside stuff and is pretty straight forward...

U.S.S. Defiance NX-92865-F

I chose the name because...

The definition of "Defiant" from Oxford Dictionary: "showing DEFIANCE." Defiant is just an adjective while Defiance is a noun, essentially the same thing, lol.

The NX-prefix as stated from Memory Alpha: "...this prefix was used for experimental and prototype starship designs."
Going in line with this, The Defiance is equipped with and continues to conduct extensive field tests with [Prototype Gravitic Modulation Impulse Engines MK XIV], [Prototype Ablative Jevonite Hardpoints], and recently a more advanced [Cloaking Device] than what was fielded by its predecessor.

The registry number is the date the ship was made-coinciding with the date my character received his promotion to the rank of Captain. The letter at the end indicates how many times the ship has undergone significant upgrades as shown on my sig below. At the moment its 'F' just like the latest Enterprise B)

The first Belfast was commanded by Captain Ve'Kal Shon until its destruction in 2409. A new ship was commissioned bearing the same name and registry as special dispensation to then newly promoted Captain Edward XIII for his pivotal role during the renewed Dominion War.

My Fleet Yamato is the USS Bartlett.

All my main's ships are named for towns/cities I've lived in or near. Bartlett fits this practice, but it also happens to be a family name.

The registry number itself is random, but it's suffix reflects the number of ships I've owned with that name.

My Command Battle Cruiser is the only exception to my naming rule, it is the USS Boston. I bought the 3 Pack the week after Leonard Nimoy passed away, Boston is his place of birth. The registry number is based on his birthday, don't remember how I arranged it off the top of my head, though...

Multiple main ships? Interesting. Any other ships I fly are simply to unlock the starship mastery trait to use on my main ship, lol.

But quite intriguing how you two came about your names :)

    Nice.
My registry numbers usually contain certain dates (eg U.S.S. Tereshkova, NX-91937 - year of her birth was 1937 / or U.S.S. Concordia, NCC-91992 - 1992 was the year of the signing of the EU treaty with their motto "In varietate concordia" which is also this ships motto). Most of my other ships follow the same style.

Ah.. and for names.. well, in most cases I prefer to use names involving females like the already mentioned Tereshkova - or Jeanne d’Arc or Tomoe Gozen.. but also from mythology like Valkyrie or Banshee.

My mother passed away in May 2013 in a car accident. All ships for all characters have been named after her ever since.

Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

    U.S.S. Deviant NX-91002-D

Definition of "Deviant" from Oxford Dictionary: "departing from usual or accepted standards."
    Synonyms: Unorthodox, Exceptional, Eccentric, Nonstandard.

Also... I chose the name because its a one letter switch from Defiant hehe B)

"NX" prefix as stated from Memory Alpha: "...this prefix was used for experimental and prototype starship designs."
The Deviant has been equipped with and field testing [Prototype Gravitic Modulation Impulse Engines MK XIV] and [Prototype Ablative Jevonite Hardpoints], as well as a more advanced [Cloaking Device] than what was fielded by its predecessor and first of its class, The Defiant.

The registry number was chosen because its the first number you can use ranging from 91002-999999 coinciding with the ship being the first ship I commanded as rank of Captain. The letter at the end indicates how many times it has been upgraded. My signature shows the development of this.

I fly the USS Georgetown. It's based on the actual ship, the USS Georgetown. It's kind of unusual how this happened. When I first played the game, I named my ships all with the letter "G" in the first name. But when I got to level cap I wanted my end-game ship to still have that letter, but to be reflective of a real navy ship. I found the Georgetown was a real navy ship. So my Assault Cruiser got that name. As the years went on, I found out more about the ship. And it's pretty interesting. They were a spy ship that did listening of transmissions for the NSA. Under the guise of being a technical research ship. So that actual history started to affect the idea behind my ship's story. It's now a Fleet Guardian, which has more science capability, so there's that aspect.

The registry number is two 9's and my zipcode.

I also have a fleet Arbiter named USS Arsenal. That's much simpler. It's a battle cruiser. And Arsenal is my favorite EPL team. So it just sounds cool to me.

EDIT: Forgot to add, I love these threads. It's always fun for me to read about the creativity people put into naming their ships. :)

My Ship names are reference from my Country's Mythology.

Bakunawa is for my Cruisers only changing on how they came out. My Oddy is the 1st Bakunawa and my last Cruiser is marked with a "X" after it's name. It's actually a jump from the "E".

My Warbirds and Dreadnought is named after Minukawa. Same as for my Oddy.

As for my KDF Battle Cruiser Buwaya is their name because it's both a name of a myth creature and local name for a croc. Which reminds me of how Greed and big KDF battle cruisers are and how lethal they can be on an Alpha Strike.

Dreadnought for my Fed is named Bathala and most escorts I named Apolaki God of War and the Sun in my country's myth.

Edit: What I meant for Same as Oddy for my Warbirds is that they have extensionas of "A", "B" etch.

All great ways of going about the same thing, naming  One was sad :'( but also still nice :)

@kurumimorishita Thanks for reminding me to think of my ship motto, lol. Totally forgot that.

    It depends on the character.
One captain has the Stadi as the regular version of the dread instead of the mirror version
    I have used USS Halsey
My Wells is the Pastak to say my captain was the previous one to the ship that keeps coming to our temporal rescue.
While my Ferengi commands the Profit Margin
And the crew I decided were misfits? The William D. Porter for the ship of the same name. 91579
KDF side my first character there commands the Melani D'ian. Yes an orion.
Romulans give me issues as proper names in romulan don't roll off the tongue as well so I put them in English.
So the Lighthawk has gone to patrol next to someone else's Nighthawk. :)

Back before the revamp of the Federation's Romulan Mystery arc, the game kind of beat me to the idea, but I still liked the name enough to use it. I named my Scimitar (now my Khopesh) the R.R.W. S'harien, after the Vulcan weaponsmith who originally resisted Surak's teachings, but eventually became such a convert he tried to have all his swords destroyed, which Surak actually stopped him from doing, since they were of such good craftsmanship. A few of those swords would get brought along by the Romulan exiles when they left Vulcan, including the Sword of the Raptor Star we would eventually find on what would become Mol'Rihan (New Romulus).

As for my reasons for naming it that, I feel like it's a name that D'tan would approve of, for its historical significance, and my own character gets a kick of the idea that, somewhere, a Vulcan's eyebrow is raised in barely disguised irritation at the thought of one the most monstrously powerful warships in the galaxy being named after a figure of peace from Vulcan history. >:)

Also...do non-Federation ships have registry numbers?

Meanwhile, for my Federation alt, I named all my ships after mythological goddesses, with their current ship being the U.S.S. Artemis, an Ambassador-class ship. For my KDF alt, all their ships have been named the I.K.S. R'hllor, as a combined reference with the name of my Orion KDF captain....

Shipname...for my Tac it is "F-5" on Baltim, because of...aahm...it finishes enemy ships...then for Sci torper "R.R.W. Hide and Seek", snooper to detect cloaked enemies. Main Sci mostly is "U.S.S. REtaliator" or "U.S.S. REtribution", my tholian ship is a "REcluse", my rommie warbird is named "R.R.W. Solar Storm" and my engineering toon's eclipse doesnt have a name yet.

My main ship is a Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser [T6]. I named her U.S.S. Mary Celeste after the brigantine of the same name who's crew mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the atlantic, always found the story of the Mary Celeste interesting. Registry is NCC 91869-B. The last 4 digits of the registry is the date of the ships name being changed from Amazon to Mary Celeste (1869). The B is because it's the third ship to carry the name. My old Fleet Advanced Heavy Cruiser Retrofit [T5], which was also named Mary Celeste was NCC 91869-A.

    fleet t5-u advanced escort u.s.s. interceptor-sr2 nx-95653-e
    fleet t5-u assault cruiser u.s.s. challenger-sr2 nx-95674-e

the interceptor is named after a pirates of the carribean ship ,
the challenger is named after the galalxy class u.s.s. challenger captained by geordi laforge
and the sr stands for special tactics and recon
and the 956 part of the registry number is based on its construction and when the ships entered active duty the rest of the numbers are there so i can differntiate between the ships and the letter e is there for i have had many ships with similar names, i had to differntiate between em somehow =)
and my escort has mask energy signature 3 but my cruiser doesnt but it still has the sr in its name since its good for tactics and crowd control =)

My main at the moment is Cpt. Jean-Luc Picard; I know, how lazy or "unique".

I mainly did this because most characters I create end up having no real meaning for me. So I recreated the entire TNG crew, only Data is photonic. Be it a temporal thing, alternative universe, mirror or a teleport accident creating an entire copy of the crew when they were still young, with the exception of Data - being a program rather than a new android so the copied crew could relate to someone from this universe/time.

My Jupiter is the U.S.S. Juggernaut, because it's a very sturdy ship with near 28k shields and I like being the one taking most of the damage. Even being tactical it takes a horde of ships to take it down.

    Ship's Motto:

My main's ship is the I.K.S. Hegh yoHwI’pu’e’, a slight shortening of the Klingon phrase "reH Hegh yoHwI’pu’’e’" or "Always it is the brave ones who die.".

Other deliberately-named ships on my other characters are: R.R.W. Phlegraea (plasma boat, named after a volcanic zone off Italy), U.S.S. Audacity (H.M.S. Audacity was the first real-world escort carrier), U.S.S. Terra Nova (captained by an Andorian; the H.M.S. Terra Nova was the ship of the doomed 1910 Scott Antarctic expedition), R.R.W.s Fulminea and Tonitrulae ('Lightning' and 'Thundering'), and R.R.W.s Triarius and Veles (a veteran and a skirmisher in the pre-Marian Roman legions).

My Fed Sci is currently flying a Krenim Science Vessel named "Aces and Eights", which is also known as the Dead Man's Hand. When Bill Hickok was shot dead in Dodge City in the midst of a game of five card stud, the five cards he left on the table were a pair of aces and a pair of eights, together with an insignificant fifth card, the identity of which is disputed. Her previous ship was a Vesta named "Deuces Wild", for the song, which was an anthem of the 90's. The poker theme is obvious, but then again my mother told me long ago, "never draw to an inside straight", a piece of advice which she said she had been given by her father, the grandfather I never knew.

My KDF Engineer is currently flying a DSD named "Honey Badger V", the latest in a series of that name, just because, well, honey badger don't give a damn!

My KDF Tac is currently flying a Fleet Qib Intel Battlecruiser christened "Boudicca IV", again the latest in a series. Somehow I doubt the queen of the Iceni needs an introduction, though some may be more familiar with the other spelling of her name, Boadicea. I chose that name simply because I admire her for being a bad-TRIBBLE b*tch who didn't take any TRIBBLE from anyone.

I tend to go with a per-character theme. For instance one of them is Earth city/region names (Milano, Karachi, Seattle) with sub themes like all Breen ships are named for cold (Reykjavik, Svalbard, Nunavut, Tallin). My main Roluman takes Romulan ideas - Endless Sky, Elements, Raptor Sword. My main Klingon for Klingonese phrases and my Klingon alt for things like IKS Grunt, IKS Flem and IKS Indistinct Gutteral Sound. My Fed Science is follows historic scientists like Kepler and Hypatia.

Registry is random for me as my creativity extends only so far for so many ships on so many alts - though when I continue a name I do apend a letter and keep the number.

I'm a HUGE Greek Mythology nut, and I'm also a nerd when it comes to Geography. As a result, all of my Starfleet ships across all of my Starfleet characters are named after Greek mythological figures or actual locations in Greece (including cities, provinces, regions, islands, mountains, oceans, lakes, etc.).

I don't really care too much about registry numbers, but for the new T6 ships I have that replaced a T5 ship that I used to fly, I add the letter suffix at the end of it. Only my Intelligence ships have an NX registry prefix, since the rest of my ships are just standard ships in full service, more or less.

My main toon flies a USS Arcadia II because I started playing this game after watching the old Captain Harlock anime series. From there, I worked backwards to name my other ships after Greek places, like Attica or Laconia. I attach roman numerals to ships in a design series and add a letter to the registry, so the Arcadia II (an Assault Cruiser Refit) inherited the name from my basic Assault Cruiser. Ships I don't intend to keep, like event ships I consider too ugly to fly, just get whatever the random generator spit out before I dismiss them. I don't bother too much with the registry numbers.

For my other Fed toon, I chose names that sound sorta stereotypically Royal Navyish, like the Redoubtable or the Indomitable. That toon's main ship is a tier 6 Heavy Escort carrier named the Redoubtable III. If I ever buy one of the end-game Defiants, it'd be the Grenadier II.

My Romulan and Klingon toons mostly went with random names chosen by the game, though I tried to pick interesting ones for their final ships. My KDF toon has a T6 Flight-deck Raptor named Galaga II and a Dyson Destroyer named Gelgoog (red paint, of course). The Romulan flies a Dyson Destroyer named Teel'dir because I thought that was sorta funny, along with a line of Ar'kif vessels named Durin.

Ok, my ship's name is explained above, but now, for a confession:

One of my first alt's ships started off as Freedom, Liberty, Justice, etc, but lately, the randomly assigned name the ships come with has been "good enough."

I'd like to change this.* I've gotten some good ideas from this thread, but one idea that occurred to me while reading the thread will be easier with a little help from non-English speakers here. The idea, which I admit is a little silly is:

A Ship Series named after Santa's reindeer. Some of the names might seem a little silly in English, though, so if anyone out there could translate them into their native tounge:
Dasher - one who runs quickly; a sprinter.
    Dancer - one who dances.
    Prancer - one who prances
    Vixen - a... Yeah...
    Comet - the celestial body
    Cupid - the bow-wielding cherub
Donder and Blitzen - which already translates to Thunder and Lightning, but let's hear what you have for a translation!

I went to Google Translate, but the results there are frequently off, so I'd like opinions from people who actually speak a language.

Romulan D'Deridex is the Haakona. I liked that name and thought it would be good to use it.
KDF K't'inga is the K'Tango. Another name I liked that was used in the shows.
KDF Hegh'ta is the K'Vort. Since they won't give us one in game. I made my own.
Fed Galaxy Dread is the Yamato. Very fitting for this ship and named after the most feared Battleship ever created.
Fed Defiant is the Renegade. As it matches the theme of how they get the job done. They do missions no one else wants to deal with.
Fed Ambassador is the Casinghead. This is based off the ship my pawpaw served on in World War II.
Fed Andorian is the ??? I hadn't decided on the name for her yet. I'm still like 10 levels from getting it.

My registry numbers are always the date I acquire or commission a ship.

Most of the names I use for ships are family names of certain plants or insects. (Physalis, Zephyranthes, Oxalis, Lampyridae, Luciolinae)

One of my fed captains has a similar theme, bassed around Hunt though.
Started with the Miranda being called the USS Paradine (random registy)
The T2 cruiser broke the theme, only one to do so in the linup.
She then moved to the free T3 excelcior she got way back when they were first released, called it the USS High Guard, registry was random.
Next moved to the galaxy class (free t4), USS Lexic Dark NCC 522780-A (added the 0 to the code to make it 6 numbers letting me start on a 5 rather than 9)
Then Free T5 assault cruiser after that, named USS Pax Magelanic, NCC 502010 (May 2010, when i got the ship, not theme related but meh)
Somewhere alone the line her Delta Flyer was named the Eureka Maru
Eventually she moved into a Galaxy-X and i made it out as a refit of the T4 ship so it too was named Lexic Dark with the registry letter changed to B
Picked up the free oddy when they were first released and named it USS Hunt. when the Avenger came out she picked that up and named it the USS Crimson Eclipse (Hunts command before Andromeda for anyone thats not an andromeda trivia buff)
and there she sat until the T6 Arbiter came out, transfered over to that nd named it the USS Lancers Hope.

I have another Fed captain that has named all her ships for Solar Events, all Science ships, started with the Nova class at T2, named it the USS Solstice (in contrast to the USS Equinox) and it sent from there, currently flying the ISS Eclipse, Paradox dreadnought, though when she isn't she's flying a T5FU Nova with mirror skin named... well the USS Eclipse

A KDF character names all her ships for Within Temptation song titles, current ship being a T6 BoP named the IKS Our Solumn Hour

My Main Flys the "White Queen", originally a fan-ficish attempt at creating a legacy ship name in the Trek universe (like the Enterprise). It started back in the days of Starfleet Battles miniatures game, went through all the games since, FASA RPG's, Starfleet Command computer game, etc. It's story changed greatly once Trills became part of Star Trek and this game started it's Time Travel stories. The registry number 990210, was a after thought.
