Just curious. A lot of people talk of facts on other people's opinions. I'm curious what the reality is. I did phrase this as "first" character but I think main is more accurate as to what we put the most effort into. If you don't consider you have a main, pick your "first".
Whereby I define roleplay as you just want that faction for story/cosmetic/RP etc. and gameplay for advantage in stats/ships/traits etc.

Now look at me! I got what I consider "Faction Mains" and a few alts.

To me Star Trek was always more about the Federation (well humanity really, but whatever) then any other faction. That is what the TV series was really about, and that is what I come into STO for.
So I started as a Fed. Eventually I think I made a Klingon too, because I do like the whole idea of it. Now I have 20 characters total (not counting the dil farmers) 3 are KDF, 2 are Romulan republic, the rest are all Fed. Though in fairness, 4 of those Feds are Cardassian/Dominion characters using the alien creator.
There were a few exceptions, like when Riker served aboard a Klingon vessel, or Worfs trials on Qo'nos. But primarily, Trek is about us, humanity. Faults and all.
Its not that I didn't like the kdf side, I wanted to play one. I just prioritized the Federation, because they are the focus of Trek.
I later went on to make 5 Kdf alts.
2 of which are Rom/Kdf.
I like them every bit as much as my Feds. (Even though Roms are OP).
My first character was a Vulcan Sci. Fed
I have a total of 9 captains on my account. I break them up into primary, secondary and tertiary captains. I play all three factions in STO because I wanted to experience story missions that were unique to each faction. Sadly, with story missions starting with the Cardassian Struggle story arc there are no more unique faction story missions.
I created all three primary captains within 3 months. My captains are categorized as follows. I devote equal time to Primary and Secondary captains the only difference between is a 4 month pause between creating the last primary captain and the first secondary captain. All these captains were created in 2014. All tertiary captains were created in 2015 while I do not play these captain very time I log into STO, I still play them very often.
Primary - Fed Engineer, KDF Tactical, Romulan Scientist
Secondary - Fed Scientist, KDF Engineer, Romulan Tactical
Tertiary - Fed Tactical, KDF Scientist, KDF Tactical (Delta Recruit)
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
"This poll lacks the options to express my nuanced opinion" Sounds rather cheeky don't you think ?
If cross faction teaming was a reality I'd be playing my KDF clone of my current main so I could Maraud rather than be Diplomatic on DOFF missions.
Cheers
Wow...OTHER wins a big time. Sorry OP
My character Tsin'xing
Prior to LoR my main was my Gorn. Right now I have 4 Republic alts, all 60, 2 KDF both 60, and 2 Fed one 60 one 57. Neither of those feds are my original characters as I deleted those as soon as I unlocked KDF play :P
Pretty much. My "Science class" roster consists of a Male Vulcan "first born", Male Joined Trill "main-main", Female Joined Trill Delta Recruit, KDF Orion, Delta Recruit Gorn, and Rom (Fedside to support my personal fleet).
My Rom-Fed Sci's playing the "EBC Science Tosser out of a T'Varo", my Orion lives in the big C-store DSD (which I don't like flying on anyone else because part and parcel of the fun of alts is to have them in different ship types, I wish a line of KDF science ships that "base off" the Vesta would be dropped...) meaning my Gorn's gonna wind up "homeless", rather not have double-DSD in KDF, nor am I a big fan of getting the EBC BoP to "cut into" my Rommie, and my Feds dice around between Vestas, Pathfinders, or my main and his Recluse...
To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]
I wanted to be me. That means human. I, for a time, studied Engineering in college. That's really how I chose, I guess that means Role Play.
I do "Faction Mains". I got a Fed, KDF and Romulan now. The others are alts I don't play often.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350
Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
At the time, I didn't know much about the game, I just wanted to be a fed. Maybe I picked the wrong option, I could say that both options 1 and 2 are applicable to me.
I mean, whose idea was it to give Romulans and Romulans alone the ability to get BOffs that have an incredibly powerful space trait that stacks with itself? For Feds and KDF, BOffs are utterly devoid of any space traits that can compare. Though Klingons can get Nausicaans with Pirate and Letheans with Efficient, Feds can only get Saurians with Efficient. Pirate is a fairly good space trait, but in no way does it compare with Superior Romulan Operative. Efficient would actually be more worthwhile on Romulans due to the lower power generation on their Singularity Cores. Feds and KDF don't really need Efficient, as their Warp Cores generate more power and, at least for me, my builds allow me to maintain 65+ power in all subsystems while having weapon power (or aux power, if Science) maxed out.
Considering that BOff abilities and setups are at the core of any space build, it would make a lot more sense if they actually had more access to more effective space traits. Yes, I know there are those Embassy BOffs, but only a few of them have Romulan Operative, only one has the superior version, and they're all Romulan, which don't really fit with my Starfleet crew. Please Cryptic, make some of the new space traits available to all BOffs of all races!
Nonsense, THIS IS SPARTAAAA!

But I never deleted those characters and today I have three or four I play equally, as in when I'm statisfied with the progress on one I switch to the next.
