While we're revamping skills, why not make shots and torpedos fly faster?

Why not increase cannon shot speed and torpedo flight speed? With all the beamspam going on, them taking their sweet time to reach the target further increase the disparity between these weapons.

Cannons would be nice... torpedoes could have different flight speeds based on type with new traits and skills to increase that. This would make heavy torpedos especially far more effective since you could really build to make them work. They've given us some nice toys right now but it's not quite enough to balance things out.

Well, I think the beams are regardless of the type some sort of light, and a torpedo or cannon projectile is a solid matter. So the question is, how fast one type of matter can travel since light is theoritically travelling at 299.792.458 m / s

cannons and torpedoes don't need to be traveling at the speed of light...but they DO need to take into account the firing ship's CURRENT speed at launch in addition to their own

they don't currently do this, so any ship traveling fast enough can literally OUTRUN the torpedoes and cannon shots they fire, making it look almost as though they're firing backwards
Like special weapons from other Star Trek games? Wondering if they can be replicated in STO even a little bit? Check this out: https://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1262277/a-mostly-comprehensive-guide-to-star-trek-videogame-special-weapons-and-their-sto-equivalents

Cannons are energy weapons just like beams they should travel just as quickly as DS9 demonstrated. The only difference is they are concentrated blasts but theoretically they would function very similarly and one could even be modified into the other.

Well I just did some testing and it takes roughly 2 seconds for a cannon shot to reach SB234 from 10km, and torpedo takes ~4 seconds. Which means cannon shots travel at 5km/s (5000m/s) and torps at 2.5km/s (2500m/s). I think we can safely double or triple these values and still not TRIBBLE off mr. Einstein.

This is another oversight which needs to be adressed, but I expect it to be much harder to implement than increasing static value of shot and torp speeds.

    It could... *hint hint*

You made weapon drop-off into a new skill after all and this is somewhat related.

Please excuse, the title made sense to me when I was making the post, but it indeed is misleading. Ill fix it right away.

Might not be skills, but still should be addressed. Yes, the Terran rep added a thing to make destrucatble torpedoes fly faster, but its so small its laughable.

All torpedoes, that means destructible ones too, need the speed increased. Everything in the game is faster than when they were designed. Cannons especially need to be increased in speed. Watching cannon shots being dragged around the map by a fast player or npc is just wrong.

This has everything to do with change, because players don't really grasp scale when it comes to upheaval.

The skill vamp creates a window where things are in flux. Unless gamer psychology took a really weird turn sometime in the last 4 years making one large set of changes is less unsettling than making two waves of smaller changes. You yourself have already launched into some huge rationalizations surround the "as much as possible" clause. Change is coming, on a scale not likely to be seen again in years. Can you blame folks for wanting to use that power for good? (at least as they see it)
