Is Warp Core Efficiency supposed to affect Flight Speed (and not just by extra Engine Power)?

Not sure if this is intentional or not, and since it happens on Holodeck as well as Tribble, I am posting here.

For the past month I have been working on the Speed Formula, which I have actually got to work as long as there is no training in Warp Core Efficiency. I have found that Warp Core Efficiency directly alters the Flight Speed of any ship when the Engine Power Setting is at 70, 65, 60, 55, 50, 40, 35, 30, 25, and 20. And I am not talking about from the extra Engine Power provided from it.

While I know my formula is not perfect, it does get results within 0.1 of the actual observed speed in game, except as noted when throwing Warp Core Efficiency into the mix. And the formula was tested on Holodeck and Tribble with the same expected results when not using Warp Core Efficiency.

Example: A 0.05 difference was constant between each Engine Power Setting when Warp Core Efficiency was not used. When the same setup was used with Warp Core Efficiency, the 0.05 difference was maintained when the Engine Power Setting was set from 100 to 75 and 45 and 15. At the Engine Power Setting of 70 and 40 the difference jumped up to 0.16, at 65 and 35 it became 0.13, at 60 and 30 it became 0.1, at 55 and 25 it became 0.07, and at 50 and 20 it became 0.03. This was a common Mk XII Impulse Engine with no traits, powers, or any other equipment slotted. I also tested with Hyper and Combat, Speed Mods x1 to x3.

The above example was pulled from one of my Tribble tests. I have also run the tests on Holodeck with similar results. I have run the same tests with different ships with different IMods with results showing the same pattern. And while the values of the differences are obviously going to be different between the different ships and engines, they are always at the same Engine Power Settings and only there when using Warp Core Efficiency. The value of the difference appears to be dependent on the Ship's Imod and the Engine's Emod.

Is this a bug or is it as intended?

While difference may not seem that huge, when Speed buffs are applied, that small difference becomes a whole lot bigger.

    Yes.

Flight speed for each tick in the Thruster bar, changes with the amount of power placed in the Engine Subsystem bar...and not just from Warp Core Efficiency. You can manually move the engine subsystem power slider bar (take power away from other subsystems) and go faster.

Warp Core Efficiency skill adds power to all subsystems without taking away from other subsystems. Therefore, engines (as well as everything else set below that 75%) will receive a benefit from it and you will fly faster.

And the LESS power allocated to a subsystem, that subsystem sees a larger boost than those set above the 75% demarcation point (which sees none).

As I already stated, that is known and understood and accepted. That is not what the problem is. The problem is that when Warp Core Efficiency is used, it is further altering that Flight Speed BEYOND what the extra Engine Power applies.

When Warp Core Efficiency is not used, the Actual Speed and the Basic Math Speed have a 0.12 difference throughout ALL Engine Power and Engine Power Settings.

When Warp Core Efficiency IS used, the Actual Speed and the Basic Math Speed have a difference of 0.12 but ONLY when the Engine Power Setting is ABOVE 70.

IF Warp Core Efficiency did not apply any other affects to Flight Speed beyond providing an Engine Power bonus at lower Engine Power Settings, then the difference would remain CONSTANT and not FLUCTUATE. Therefore, Warp Core Efficiency IS further altering the Flight Speed.

Keep in mind that ingame rounding of the UI numbers is a bit wonky.

If I read this correct, your engine power is actually at 113 instead of 100, and you're getting a calculated value that is .12 off from what you see in the UI. Chances are, that 113 is actually 113.6 rounded down.

I am familiar with ingame rounding and a 113.6 would be rounded up to 114. It is not the matter of the 0.12 difference from the basic formula. My actual Speed Formula is a lot closer to what is seen ingame. This is about how Warp Core Efficiency is furthering altering the a ship's Flight Speed beyond the extra Engine Power it provides at the lower Engine Power Setting. If it did nothing else to affect Flight Speed than to provide that extra Engine Power, the difference would be constant.

Here is a quick list of the same Engine Power (NOT SETTING) and how the ingame Flight Speed differs between them based on Warp Core Efficiency:

    WCE: 0, Engine Power Setting: 55, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 68 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 23.1, Ingame Speed: 23.22, Difference: 0.12
    WCE: 99, Engine Power Setting: 50, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 68 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 23.1, Ingame Speed: 23.1, Difference: 0.0

    WCE: 0, Engine Power Setting: 50, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 63 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 = 22.1, Ingame Speed: 22.22, Difference: 0.12 under
    WCE: 74, Engine Power Setting: 45, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 63 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 22.1, Ingame Speed: 22.05, Difference: 0.05 over
    WCE: 84, Engine Power Setting: 45, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 63 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 22.1, Ingame Speed: 22.16, Difference: 0.06 under

    WCE: 94, Engine Power Setting: 45, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 63 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 22.1, Ingame Speed: 22.28, Difference: 0.18 under

    WCE: 64, Engine Power Setting: 30, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 48 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 19.1, Ingame Speed: 19.3, Difference: 0.2

    WCE: 0, Engine Power Setting, 30, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 43 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 18.1, Ingame Speed: 18.22, Difference 0.12
    WCE: 54, Engine Power Setting: 25, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 43 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 18.1, Ingame Speed: 18.23, Difference: 0.13

    WCE: 0, Engine Power Setting: 25, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 38 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 17.1, Ingame Speed: 17.22, Difference: 0.12
    WCE: 89, Engine Power Setting: 15, 5 + ( 14.5 + ( 38 - 50 ) x 0.2 x 1 ) = 17.1, Ingame Speed: 17.22, Difference: 0.12

As you will see, there are only three instances that the Flight Speed without Warp Core Efficiency is equal to or within 0.01 of the Flight Speed with Warp Core Efficiency. With the final Engine Power matching, the Flight Speed should remain constant or within a very small degree of variance. No amount of rounding would cause the fluctuations as seen with the Engine Power of 63.

I'm sorry, I meant to say I think it truncates, not rounds. Putting those examples into a spreadsheet gives me these results:

    Group 1: Engine Power(68.6), Impulse(23.22)
    Group 1: Engine Power(68.0), Impulse(23.1)

    Group 2: Engine Power(63.6), Impulse(22.22)
Group 2: Engine Power(62.75), Impulse(22.05) <- oddity, power level lower than expected
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.3), Impulse(22.16)
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.6), Impulse(22.22)
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.9), Impulse(22.28)

    Group 3: Engine Power(53.6), Impulse(20.22)
    Group 3: Engine Power(53.4), Impulse(20.18)

    Group 4: Engine Power(48.6), Impulse(19.22)
    Group 4: Engine Power(48.15), Impulse(19.13)
Group 4: Engine Power(48.98), Impulse(19.3) <- oddity, power level on the verge of being higher than expected?

    Group 5: Engine Power(43.6), Impulse(18.22)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.65), Impulse(18.23)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.0), Impulse(18.1)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.0), Impulse(18.1)

    Group 6: Engine Power(38.6), Impulse(17.22)
    Group 6: Engine Power(38.6), Impulse(17.22)

Taking into account truncating, I could only find one real oddity, and one that was extremely close to being wrong. This makes me wonder if the UI is adding in the extra power before or after the values are being truncated.

Cryptic rounding in the past has been:
    • If the digit is under 5, round down.
    • If the digit is over 5, round up.
    • If the digit is 5, if the previous digit is 5 or more, round up.
    • If the digit is 5, and the previous digit is 4 or less, round down.

    Edit: Examples to clarify
    • 67.6 rounds to 68
    • 67.4 rounds to 67
    • 67.5 rounds to 68
    • 65.5 rounds to 66
    • 64.5 rounds to 64

Does that help this discussion at all? I'm really curious about this myself.

I'm sorry, I meant to say I think it truncates, not rounds. Putting those examples into a spreadsheet gives me these results:

    Group 1: Engine Power(68.6), Impulse(23.22)
    Group 1: Engine Power(68.0), Impulse(23.1)

    Group 2: Engine Power(63.6), Impulse(22.22)
Group 2: Engine Power(62.75), Impulse(22.05) <- oddity, power level lower than expected
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.3), Impulse(22.16)
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.6), Impulse(22.22)
    Group 2: Engine Power(63.9), Impulse(22.28)

    Group 3: Engine Power(53.6), Impulse(20.22)
    Group 3: Engine Power(53.4), Impulse(20.18)

    Group 4: Engine Power(48.6), Impulse(19.22)
    Group 4: Engine Power(48.15), Impulse(19.13)
Group 4: Engine Power(48.98), Impulse(19.3) <- oddity, power level on the verge of being higher than expected?

    Group 5: Engine Power(43.6), Impulse(18.22)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.65), Impulse(18.23)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.0), Impulse(18.1)
    Group 5: Engine Power(43.0), Impulse(18.1)

    Group 6: Engine Power(38.6), Impulse(17.22)
    Group 6: Engine Power(38.6), Impulse(17.22)

Taking into account truncating, I could only find one real oddity, and one that was extremely close to being wrong. This makes me wonder if the UI is adding in the extra power before or after the values are being truncated.

Not sure, truncating may be the reason for it adding the extra speed, but only when Warp Core Efficiency is used. In my long form Speed Formula of the basic math, my results match exactly with the ingame speed; at least when Warp Core Efficency is not used.

If that is the case, I would still like official word if it is intentional or not.

I'm double checking my numbers as I try different things, and I'm running into a slight problem getting things to continue lining up... What do you have that is bumping up your power by the initial 13? That might also have a hidden decimal.

Edit: Here is my Google spreadsheet.

Warp Core Potential and Engine Performance.

However, I do believe that the hidden decimals are a red herring. There are other calculations in game that have them as well, and player methods (like the Weapon Damage Calculator or the old Starship Power Calculator) were not affected as drastically by them.

I do think that the truncated math that you proposed is happening when Warp Core Potential is used. In my other data collection and working on the Speed Formula, I have been able to factor in everything that affects the Flight Speed (Engine Mods, consoles, traits) to within 0.1 of the actual Flight Speed. It is only when Warp Core Efficiency is added that the results become extremely off. If the hidden decimals were a factor for the entire process, it would have shown when not using Warp Core Efficiency.

This is actually the only reason why I have not released my formula.

P.S. I really hope that someone from the STO team would chime in on this. @borticuscryptic

At a glance, I'd chalk this up to rounding inaccuracies. The differences are small enough that it could account for it.

I'm afraid I don't have the time right now to dig into your math to see how accurate it is, but it's safe to say that Speed calculations in Space are ... not simple. There are multiple table lookups, references to speed variables from classes, items and subsystem power, and more. Then there's the question of whether or not the information you're being given via Tooltips is completely accurate or not.

Rather than being a bug, I think it just as safely be presumed that whatever equations you're using are producing approximations, but don't have the complete picture of what's going on behind the scenes. I wouldn't fault you for that - it's not something we've ever taken the time to publicly explain how it works. Even getting close would be something of an achievement. ;)

I understand Bort, that you don't have time as you are dealing with the Skill Revamp and thanks for the quick reply. None of the results I posted used any speed boosts.

The basic formula for calculating Flight Speed, without any skill in Starship Impulse Thrusters or speed boosts has been: 5 + ( FSpd + ( EPow - 50 ) x Imod x Emod ). That is the formula I used for the results I have posted. The long form of that basic formula is: 5 + EPow x Imod x Emod + (Eng Mark Level x 0.38) and that gets me within 0.01 of Actual Flight Speed, except when Warp Core Efficiency is used.

Just for reference, here is the data I gathered from Tribble with the Skill Revamp. Again, the difference is constant, until Warp Core Efficiency is used. And the results from Tribble appear to show a pattern.

I had a whole big write up with a formula that seemed to be working, but then I started having my full throttle speeds vary just doing stop-n-go on Holodeck and Tribble without any changes in power, gear, or other stats. I'll have to figure out the cause of this.

If you were using the Advanced Engines trait, that may be a reason. It starts out with a 25% speed boost, then about every minute it adds another 1% boost on top of that. It peaks at about 33.35% after 8 minutes.

I am going to look into your idea of the truncated math and see if that evens things out. I am still not sold on the idea that rounding inaccuracies are the cause. That is only because of all the data I have accumulated doesn't really support it.

I will be returning to focusing on how either solving the problem or working the Warp Core Efficiency into the formula, and treating it as it is intentional.

I use the Counter Command engines. The problem I am having is I'd go to full throttle and have 49.5 impulse, come to a complete stop, go back to full throttle a couple minutes later and be at 51.4 impulse. It then stays at 51.4 until I leave the zone. If I come back into the zone, it goes back to 49.5. It's as if the game is taking a few minutes to find something used to calculate impulse.

    * After additional testing, I get this slight impulse increase after a few minutes even if I do not come to a complete stop. It does not increase beyond this. I can also get a variance of .02 depending on the angle my ship is moving. Perhaps impulse speeds have something to do with map units moved over a period of time.

I'm using a modified version of the impulse formula from https://theenginescannaetakeit.wordpress.com/articles-3/starship-mechanics/#speed, and am getting numbers fairly close to what they should be.

That was my starting point as well.

As far as Warp Core Efficiency situation, I believe I found the answer, thanks to you. I ran your idea of truncated math into my spreadsheet, but only to the data I got from Tribble. Specifically, I changed the values for the Engine Power Bonus that the new version of Warp Core Efficiency provides. I added those new values into my formula and adjusted the Engine Power from what was shown in game to reflect no Warp Core Efficency being used. After that I adjusted my formula to add the Engine Power (with the +3 from the first box of training of Warp Core Potential) and the adjusted value from Warp Core Efficiency, and use that total instead of the in game display. And the final adjustment was to to Excel to truncate the result. I applied the new information and the truncated formula to the rest of the data I posted earlier, and the differences became uniform. I applied the same changes to my long form formula and it worked there too. A little later, I will go on Tribble and get the data on the different traits and consoles slotted and then run those results through the truncated formula and see how they get along.

    Tribble Warp Core Efficiency
At 70 Engine Power, adds 0 Engine Power, value changed to 0.83333333
At 65 Engine Power, adds 1 Engine Power, value changed to 1.6666666
At 60 Engine Power, adds 2 Engine Power, value changed to 2.4999999
At 55 Engine Power, adds 3 Engine Power, value changed to 3.3333332
At 50 Engine Power, adds 4 Engine Power, value changed to 4.1666665
At 45 Engine Power, adds 5 Engine Power, value changed to 4.9999998
At 40 Engine Power, adds 5 Engine Power, value changed to 5.8333331
At 35 Engine Power, adds 6 Engine Power, value changed to 6.6666664
At 30 Engine Power, adds 7 Engine Power, value changed to 7.4999997
At 25 Engine Power, adds 8 Engine Power, value changed to 8.333333
At 20 Engine Power, adds 9 Engine Power, value changed to 9.1666663
At 15 Engine Power, adds 10 Engine Power, value changed to 9.9999996

Those exact value changes (and with no rounding of them whatsoever) brings the results inline.

@borticuscryptic : Just tagging you to show that we figured it out.

I'm glad to hear it worked. The truncated math was something I first encountered while making a damage resistance spreadsheet. The numbers were correct, but not quite matching what I saw in the UI. It took a bit of trial and error to figure it out.
