a TV trope theory posited the federation could easily have made their own cloaks for a long time (Hell the ship Riker was an ensign on not only had a cloak, but one that let them phase through normal matter.) They simply conceded such a huge advantage because everyone else remembers the Genesis device. Yes yes it was ungodly difficult to make and the feds dropped the technology because apparently unstable. However look at it from the perspective of a weapon. Fire ONE torpedo and suddenly your whole planet isn't just gone, but any hint that your culture or people were there is erased.

The feds gave up cloaking to maintain galactic stability. I forget why the defiant was allowed cloaking (other than it was given a specific allowance in the face of the dominion threat and even then they couldn't use it in the alpha quadrant. (or was it 'outside of the gamma quadrant?) Either way the defiant class was the singular exception and that was due to extraordinary conditions.

It was outside the gamma quadrant, which they did use, and apparently it was on loan from the Romulan's for use against the Dominion, for which they got all of the Federation's intel on the Gamma Quadrant. (I read about it early today, lol.)

With the amount of political instability in early 25th century with the 8472 and Iconian conflicts, the alliance need every edge it can get, the Federation getting cloaking technology fits into that.

I'd surmise that the Romulan Republic being the masters of cloaking tech would be providing technical assistance to the Federation in developing Federation cloaking technology

Just standard Cloak. Only one class can have Battlecloak. This is the agreement. >:)

why is that most people are against fed have a battle cloak, from the way i see it, since the romulans gave the fed a cloak to be install on the defiant and since the fed already at once upontime made their own cloaking teach before, am sure they could have improve on it. the KDF did with their version of cloak they stole from the romulans. I don't even use my cloak on the defiant and Valiant, because it not the style of the fed to cloak ship and come out and start firing. that is the Rom and the KDF. So OP getting annoying of something the Rom gave is pointless.

It's less an in-world gripe, and more of a comment on how the Feds slowly get everything that's unique to the other factions if they whine long enough for it.

That said, the cloak loaned to the USS Defiant was a single, one-off agreement. Fed players need to learn that no, they're no Sisko and their Defiant is just a run-of-the-mill Defiant-class. And as for the KDF, most lore considers that the Romulans gave them their cloak during the 2260s-era alliance that saw the Romulans get access to the D7 cruiser.

Honestly, I don't really understand why anyone cares all that much about Feds having the cloak. In order to achieve it, they're essentially crippling themselves to use a crutch. That's a bunch of console real estate down the drain for one ability. The only way I would be unhappy is if it was built into the ship. If that happens, then... yeah, that should never happen.

The Feds have gotten aceton assimilators and the plasmonic leech. Did anybody ever doubt that they would eventually get the battle cloak as well? Tiaru Jarok's lament about everyone stealing Romulan technology wasn't in jest. It' just that she didn't go far enough and include Cryptic's role in that lamentation.

While I'm all for faction distinctiveness, perhaps I should remind you that the current state recognised as the Romulan polity, by most of the Milky Way, is in an Alliance with the United Federation of Planets, and Klingon Empire. ;)

An alliance they got into knowing they'd be forced to fork over Romulan tech no less. Still its all kinda moot since we're all one big TRIBBLE plot now

The cost of reconstruction, is cooperation. Fortunately, reconstruction is almost complete.

Romulans are very protective of their cloaking technology. They may be a republic now but they are still Romulans.

No worries, we did not get assimilated by borgs but will be assimilated by vulcans and the "pink skins" alliance.

No, they don't get ALL the faction-unique things, they don't get neglected, treated as irrelevant, abandoned, ignored, ridiculed...Those remain the "Faction Unique" traits of KDF, only now they're giving them to the Romulans...joy.

Can Romulans get their own Starbases, then? :D
