Having seen the 'updated' Shield FX when hit, I found it was bland, a few squiggly lines and no colours. I preferred the old look, which was more colourful and showed decently that you were being hit. What are your opinions on whether you liked it or not? Please state your reasons.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

I haven't noticed it either. I almost forgot there was an update...

Actually... I don't think they really showed TOS shields due to tech and budget at the time. We never really saw shields even in the TOS Movies. Sure they said things about weakening shields, but no shield impacts and we saw damage to the hull despite shields in TUC. Hell... a torpedo punched through the Excelsior's saucer right after she arrived, with shields up.
We didn't see shield flares until TNG. And I think the Honeycomb pattern is actually an game engine thing I think, since we're using the same engine as Champions Online, so reuse of existing resources.

Yes I know. That's why I said it's non-canon info.
Mr. Scott's manual for the Enterprise (I don't know what it's called right now) described shield systems and depicted them in the honeycomb pattern. The original Borg shield effect used this pattern as well which is why I thought STO used it for the barrier fields, forcefield domes etc.

That would have been a nice update. I suppose they use white so that the effect is universal. However, coloured shields would be more canon, and I'm a stickler for canon. I remember spending hours modding a good looking shield effect and colour for my ships in Bridge Commander.
As for my opinion of the current shields, I'm ok with it. It's a little bit... wavy I guess is the correct word. Like ripples. If I could choose though, I would rather stick to a canon shield effect which in my mind is the one shown in First Contact.

This is a fair point, though. It's time Cryptic takes a stance on all the coloured effects at one point.

Agreed. When I have loads of powers/traits firing off their effects, it obscures the action alot! Only things that physically affect the ship and/or shields (weapon impacts/shield effects etc) should be shown.
It's like every new effect has to be so distinct and stand out from the others, they just keep trying to top themselves.
Given the amount weapons fire that hits the shields from every direction it still looks really wrong that impact just pops up on the front, back and sides of the ship.
A smaller, faster, realtime effect that looked like it was reacting to where the weapon was actually coming from would have been better.
The effect itself I don't mind but now that distortion rendering over the top is gone the shield is so subtle I hardly notice it.
This video pretty much sums up what I'd like to see one day.

They don't look anything like the shields in any of the shows and it kinda ruins my personal immersion.
I know somebody put a lot of effort into creating it, and I'm not downplaying Their creative talents, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Anyway don't like it tbh, would much rather see something more true to the shows.
If there is another animation with the shields, then I'm unaware of it as I haven't noticed it yet.

Yeah that's not what we are talking about.
Were talking about the visual effects from weapons impacting on the shield bubble. Which can be noticeable in the lower tiers, but tends to slip buy at endgame due to the infinite ability spam and their animations.
