Crashing Error: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG

This has been happening for me since the patch a week ago. From what I can dig up, the explanation is: "The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is an design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed.". STO is the only game I have ever seen this in but I did find a thread over on the Steam boards referring to the same issue in Neverwinter a year ago.

i7 4770k
MSI Z87-GD65
16GB G.Skill PC3-2400C10
XFX R390 8GB
Win 8.1 x64

Drivers tried: 16.1 Hotfix, 15.11.1, and 15.12, all of which have this issue but yet games like BioShock Infinite and Arkham Knight on max ultra settings runs fine for hours.
