Building A Beam Ship

jslynjslyn Member Posts: 1,790 Arc User
I have always run with Torpedo Boats (and one All-Turret just for personal amusement), but I feel like starting a new character and mixing it up a bit. I decided to try Beams with a Fed-Aligned Romulan Engineer Captain. Since I know practically nothing about Beam Builds, I thought that I would ask for advice on making one from scratch. So would y'all be so kind as to share with me your knowledge on the subject, please?

Boost weapons power as high as possible even over the 125 cap and get plenty of EPS. This way when your beams begin to drain power the extra power will refill the bar almost Immediately depending how high your EPS rating is and significantly improve your DPS. You can also run eight beams without issue. Look Into buying the Plasmonic Leech and Astika Lobi ship for its trait. Also the Arbiter or its other faction equivalent for the trait which reduces weapon power drain. The Arbiter itself is an amazingly lethal cruiser and my personal favorite for DPS. Also use the Intel power Override Subsystem Safeties for a massive DPS boost. Use with other DPS boosts for best effect.

Make a tactical captain, use any console that improves the damage of your chosen weapon type like spire consoles of course. Any remaining slots fill with universals like the borg, Romulon, bioneural and tachyokinetic Lobi consoles. If you use Antiproton get the polymorphic probe console off the exchange from the Herald lockbox. If you use phaser grab the quantum phase set and the counter command weapon set 2-piece gives a nice bonus etc.

Antiproton is best by a little bit and the ideal mods are [DMG]x3 [PEN] for most normal people and [CRTD]x3 [PEN] if you have a high critical rate such as Romulon players. Either will work fine and the difference is minimal. If that's too rich for you just get a combination of the above mods at atleast UR level. Of course you don't need Uber weapons but they certainly help. Fleet weapons with some combination of dmg and crtd are easy to get and quite good as well.

    Did I miss anything folks?

    Thank you for your advice.

I used a Tac as my Torpedo Boat Captain. I didn't like them, honestly. I figure the Engineer will increase Lifespan and help to cover the Energy Deficit that Romulans come with.

Coming up with Weapons won't be a problem. My other character has 15+ in Crafting Skills and tons of materials to work with.

Glad to help, any career will work but tactical captains are better. In the current state of the game engineers suck and science is decent.

I was wanting to make a Ground Summoner, too. That was another reason for the Engineer.

Ooo. I bet I can a Space Summoner also, if I find a Carrier. Hm. Something to think about.

Engies can make things more survivable with that natural hull heal they get. And the EPS Power Transfer will give a good power boost.

Persionally, I say pick a damage type you like and run with it. Unless you are shooting for top tier DPS where everything melts just by you LOOKING at them, anything will work. I got a decent Tetryon setup on my Fleet Assault Cruiser. Sure I'm nerfed a bit by using the hybrid Phased Tetryon, but I made it work.

My For-Fun Turret Dreadnought used Tetryon for a good long while, so I right there with you. :)

I think I am going to try Polaron. I never bank on the 2.5% Chance anyway.

Anyone have suggestions for good BOff Skills and DOffs that give them a hand?

Two copies of FAW and one each of APB and APO. Tactical team, OSS and Kemocite if you want.

DOFF'S are up to you, I use ones to decrease my emergency powers to global and a Zemok but he's terribly pricey. You'll also want the Reciprocity trait from the Phantom or exchange for the other factions.

I like to use one torpedo but that's up to your preference.
