Question for everyone. I'm just about ready to open up nominations for the station's command crew. Should I use this thread or make a new one? I don't want to overcrowd this forum with threads, but I also want to keep this thread for general project discussion.
Either works but it'll sooth my nascent OCD if we could have a clean discussion of the crew in a new thread.
I'm the same way! It would be nice to keep everything under one thread, but I think a separate thread for this subject would probably be best. I have a feeling that the topic will become huge. Just look to Thay's very long threads about populating his works.
I know that it's not relevant now, but I published a map to show what a Klingon Alliance base might look like...if interested, look for Gorkon Station under review.
I kinda like the Gorkon concept, but I think the old ESD station works better for the main base of operations for the Project. Perhaps Gorkon station was one of the primary KDF exploration bases before the Alliance station was built and is still used in that capacity, though to a diminished extent. You could use it in your missions and ask that others maybe reference it theirs (maybe even getting a shout out from one of the core NPCs in the 'intro' mission on the new Alliance station - ask Drogyn).
Well, I think we should discuss the crew here, and then when we are ready to take nominations, we'll start a new thread.
Here's what I had been thinking, based off the DS9 crew: Station Commander, Executive Officer, Chief Medical Officer, Chief of Operations, Science Officer, Strategic Operations Officer, Chief of Security and then one official representative each from the Federation, Romulan Republic and Klingon Empire.
But your suggestion is a good one, rather than doing the command crew, have people who are in charge of the various types of exploration missions.
Edit: oops I guess you already started that thread. No worries, I'll post over there.
Here's a list of ships my exploration mission currently includes (no stated affiliation with starbase but they're in the area at least. )
U.S.S. Discovery - Nebula Class - Captain Bailey (SSF)
U.S.S. Sierra - Sovereign Class
U.S.S. Essex - Excalibur Class
U.S.S. Foundation - Akira Class
U.S.S. Hoplite - Maelstrom Class
U.S.S. Challenger - Emissary Class - Captain Maxwell (Starfleet Captain ENG Human Male 01)
D.C.V. Dyson - Custom Dyson Destroyer

what do you mean exactly by "Custom Dyson Destroyer"?
I used a combination Dyson Destroyer bits to create the Dyson. Everything else uses one of the corresponding stock variant from the NPC contact list.
If someone else is planning on using it too I'll throw up screenshots for the variant I came up with.

So I'm assuming that your U.S.S. Dyson as it was originally called went through some refits? I'd like to see it if that's ok!
I'm changing it to D.C.V. Dyson. Players may have seen a U.S.S. or an R.R.W. Dyson depending on their faction. I'm chosing the FED design but to reconcile the faction differences (and to go along with backstory details) I'm choosing to invent a new prefix for the Dyson Joint Command.

That looks really cool! If anyone wants to use the U.S.S. Calypso (Generic Odyssey class) from my mission which is still to be republished (working on redoing some of it) feel free I'll get the sliders for her captain when I next go in the foundry.
I thought about offering the Pax Federatica, but as a Tactical Odyssey she's more of a combat ship than an explorer. So instead, I volunteer the U.S.S. Trailblazer (kitbashed Multi-Mission Recon Explorer), an NPC version of another one of my toons' ships. I'll get the settings next time I'm in the ship tailor.
I will offer the U.S.S. Ophion, an Oberth class vessel that runs Xenological surveys and has been modified for First Contact scenarios. Her Captain, Jerrold Cornell, is an FDC Envoy and knows a bit about archeology. He was a bit psychotic for a while, but he feels better now. I can supply sliders for the Captain if anyone is interested.
As promised, here are the U.S.S. Trailblazer settings. (These are taken from the in-game ship tailor, but I believe all the settings are the same in the Foundry costume editor.)

Another list to keep is probably species and planets in the area (as a quick reference guide for other authors and handy way to indicate "hey, I'm working on a similar idea. Join forces?")

Here's a location I'm using from the local neighborhood.
SOF-898 (aka "insert random star designation here")
It's a young system, still not quite fully formed, which a couple Alliance factions (Starfleet and the Dyson Joint Command) have selected for experiments.

Mine will be a First Contact mission....now I can create the new species easily enough with the character creator but I've having a harder time with the ships, got any advice on that front anyone?

Easy: skip the tailor and select from "Generic" NPC ship costumes for your new species.
Less easy: in the tailor look for an alien ship that people aren't too familiar with (ex. Xindi escort) and give that a new paint job.

The Star Trek series had no problem reusing the same ship model to be many different species ships so that's good enough for foundry missions.
My first exploration mission has just published (and been tested).
Trident, Part 1 [SSF-E]
I'll add the 3 letter exploration tag when we decide on that. Current starting location is the Archer System, and feedback would be very appreciated, (I did go a little further out with this one.)

well I would suggest as a tag AEI since we do have a banner to that effect
Another poll is probably going to be in order soon (maybe right after the name is finalized?)

My (first) AEI mission won't be out until sometime in the summer (since I still have "Mirrorball" to complete before then) but here is a summary of the concept:
"Defense Mechanisms" Affiliation: Fed (will make it Romulan-friendly too) Synopsis: An unusual first-contact situation has arisen. A civilization in a nearby star system, though still pre-warp, has developed subspace communications and sensors, and they have not only detected the AEI starbase, but have sent a message inviting the Alliance to their world. Given these unusual circumstances, the first-contact specialist dispenses with the usual Prime Directive guidelines and sends the player's ship to do the honors - but shortly after arrival, the ship is targeted by the planet's automated defenses, which seem to have a mind of their own.

I don't think they match up here's what's in my editor looks like, plus it doesn't tell you colour codes for some bizarre reason!
