it has already been established in another thread that fair warning of 2014 being the last chance to gain past event ships was given by cryptic, if this was missed or ignored by players that is not cryptics problem.

I tend to follow the forums pretty well, and I don't recall anywhere, in 2014, that the retirement of ships was going to be a thing. When the Risian "Love Boat" Cruiser and/or the Breen Carrier dropped, I don't recall seeing "you better slot this whether you want it or not, because that won't be an option come next event".

Now in 2015, shortly after the promotion of Salamiinferno to EP, in that short window between the Samsar / Anniversary Event and the release of information on the Nandi for Summer Event came the "exclusivity announcement". This gave zero "last chance" opportunities, it was "if you didn't already plan for it, you're SOL"...

This is, as I tend to remember it, the general gist of the situation. If there was a 2014 announcement, I (and many others, it seems from the plethora of posts) missed it hardcore. And remember, it's not "announced" if it shows up in a Podcast, the only true official source of official Star Trek Online news is and always should be the game's official news pages.
(and this is a whole nother ball of wax that the previous Community Management Team didn't seem to catch on too very well, either...)

having a problem holding the news page as it skips to the new format but this is the relevant passage >

"NOTE: If you want to claim the Raider or the Cruiser, and have not already done so, make sure slot the appropriate project by Thursday, January 16, 2014 around 10AM PST as the ship projects will no longer be available to slot, and ship projects offered may change during the next Winter Event – this many include the Raider and/or Cruiser not being available as a project option next year. Any winter ship project in progress by the aforementioned date will remain in progress until it is canceled or completed by you."
That's saying you can't slot projects outside events, which is kind of obvious. The rest is just the usual legal disclaimers they put in all announcements, same as the "stats subject to change" in ship blogs. That same comment has been there in every event for years and the ships have remained available, so it doesn't count as "fair warning" of anything.

Though it is interesting even as a disclaimer, because it promises that already-slotted projects would never be removed.

Ok, so there was some warning - but it says "....may change....", not "...will change..", so there was nothing definite about it...

And with all the bugs that jumped in with switching event ships to account unlocks, some people propably thought that they will get the ships next event, when all the bugs get fixed...., oh well - nothing to do about it now (only to keep writing do PWE, so they put the event ships to Lobi or Zen store - which would be good thing actually).

don't you know they wont commit to anything until its about to happen, making long term statements of future events is not something cryptic do.
putting out a warning that something may happen is about as good a warning as you are likely to get until they commit to an idea and it is too late to act on it.

even so that is enough of a warning for anyone to make sure they had all the past event ships before they were "possibly" removed from the game, if players failed to act on this they only have themselves to blame.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

you must be reading it different to the way I am, the words "ship projects offered may change during the next Winter Event – this many include the Raider and/or Cruiser not being available as a project option next year."

seems like a probable indication that the ships are likely to be removed from the event at some point, as I read it this has nothing whatsoever to do with not being able to slot projects between events as you suggest.
it is true what you say about the statement about projects never being removed however cryptic is free to change its policies at any time and I guess they figured players had been given enough chances to get the ships if they wanted them and to be honest I kind of agree with them on that.
having said that I think it would be fair to at least make the set parts available to players who have at least one ship from the line.
