It seems there already is an in-game mechanism for doing this, with a number T5-U ships: buy the T6 version.
they dont sell tholian or timeship versions.....
give it a minute... actually when they get around to making a temporal spec, some of us assume their gonna make, they probably will make t6 version of the timeships. would you want to have to buy a 3rd version to get to weaponize totally temporal science not time magic?
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
T5U lockbox /lobi ships are definitely NOT handicapped vs T6.
(You can't see it but I'm shaking my head in disgust right now) .
keeping shaking...nothing in there but rocks apparently...
Why would they create a mechanism to upgrade a lockbox/lobi ship to T6?
Where's the money in that for them, when they can make more by introducing NEW T6 lockbox ships with similar but upgraded abilities?
Who has the rocks?
Assuming equal or identical equipment (and stating what should be obvious):
A T5U Lockbox/Lobi ship is superior to its closest T5U Fleet ship analogue (same number of boff abilities and consoles)
A T5U Fleet ship is, in general, equal to a T6 (non-fleet level, so not CBC or Pilot ships). The exception is a T6 with an excellent trait and console. (A T6 has one more boff ability and one less console vs a Fleet T5U or T5U Lockbox/Lobi ship)
A new T6 Lockbox/Lobi ship is superior to its closest T6 Fleet ship analogue (same number of boff abilities and consoles).
Devs don't care about how a particular ship performs in a DPS build, not to the extent that most players who care about such things care. They're going to balance ships in ways that will be foreign to such a player, hence why there are so many exasperated-annoyed posts and threads made by people who really really care about DPS and only DPS who think everything else is superfluous and stupid.
The same can be said of those who are proponents of certain specialized science heavy builds, who behave in a similar fashion.
That's what I call realistic, within a wide frame of reference.

Again, not that the devs were even hinting that T6 upgrades were going to be a thing, but this is exactly what the playerbase was rallying against the devs to do in the leadup to / fallout from Delta Rising.
But the devs were also solid in their promise. They said that T6 was designed in such a way as to sidestep the trend of devaluation in other MMOs. Our T5 ships are strong enough to the point that 1) I've still bought new T5 ships after T6 was a thing, and 2) I have yet to replace on of my T5 ships with its respective T6 refit version.
T5 was never invalidated, devalued, or made obsolete. And they designed the T5U upgrade system in such a way as to make them on par with T6, with the only noticeable difference being a lack of specilization seating.
Slightly unrelated - but I wish they'd done the same with Fleet T6 ships as they did way back when Fleet ships were introduced.
Back when they first appeared, there were a number of Fleet ships that had no T5 version. I.e, the Nova class - it had a T2 version but there was no T5 Nova until the Fleet version appeared.
Yeah, I guess there's no reason not to introduce T6 without a Fleet counterpart (except for ships like Command, which are already Fleet-quality), seeing as it's all end-game capable content.
But, they do differentiate somewhat. The T6 Gal-X doesn't come with the Yamato costume.
Either way, the fact that most of the ships in the game are available at Fleet-level, means that most of the ships in the game can make it to T5-U. Which is pretty awesome, because it means that there are only a select few ships that aren't flyable at the end-game.
It would be nice if there were an in-game mechanism by which we could upgrade a T5U to a T6. Zen/Dill/etc.
Are there any plans/ideas about this?
T5U was the upgrade. If Cryptic could or (more likely) wanted to allow players to upgrade all applicable ships to T6 then they would have enabled it with the very first upgrade scheme. A second would be, simply stated, redundant. T5U brings T5 ships up to the new par minus a single boff seat and spec powers, the latter of which would also need to be omitted from an upgrade scheme (because it would require making a choice between existing specs, which for DR would have meant a whole lot of intel ships.) Adding a bonus Eng/Sci/Tac/Uni boff seat to T5U might be an idea worth arguing for (because then there'd be complete parity, not just sufficient parity) but as a new component of the existing upgrade scheme.

ummm No. I beleive OP you are under the impression T6 equals instant win. Sorry but a few of the T6's are in some ways actually less capable then some of the T5U's. You really dont need a T6 or T5U to do anything in this game. Yes they may make it easier in some cases but the way ships are right now is fine. I wish instead of revampng older ships to T6 they would just make all new designs that are actually way better the T5U's in every aspect. There are a couple but for the most part all you need for end game is a T5 that is properly geared and played.
i have a few T5U lockbox ships and tbh i cant tell the difference and my galor can beat the doors off most T6s so no there is no real difference besides a trait.
And tbh you can by some traits off the exchange and you can even reuse the traits you unlocked from your T6s if you have any so no not much dfference your T5U is only T5U if you choose not to use ship traits.
Once you slot a ship trait your T5U has every aspect as a T6 so imo these type of threads are more about whining then actually trying to give positive feedback , criticism or ideas about the game .
I still fly my T5-U fleet avenger from time to time, have no immediate plans to get the T6 Arbiter yet
Same for me, really. I view T6 refits as a second-chance to get the ship with an extra shiny bit.
For example, I have the T6 Arbiter because I never got the T5 Avenger beforehand. But on the flip side, I haven't bought the T6 Kara because I already have the T5 Haakona.
Haven't yet been tempted enough by any T6 refit to buy it in addition to the T5 original I already have. There's probably a ship they'll release at some time that'll tempt me enough, but not so far. In my opinion, Cryptic kept that solid to their original promise of T6 not invalidating T5.

Despite the cost being the same, these two ships are not even close to the same league. T5U is much weaker than T6.
Detail-impaired.
1) You're not comparing the right ships. It may be called a Dreadnought, and have a Dreadnought mastery package, but the Breen Dreadnought is essentially a tactically themed T6 Flight Deck-Support Cruiser.... compare it to the Samsar/Fleet Guardian/FT5U Ambassador. Or, even better, compare it to the T5U lockbox/lobi flight deck cruisers.
2) The Rezreth has 13 Boff/ 11 consoles ... "Fleet equivalent" --- +hp, +shields, +1 console vs "regular" T6
3) You're not actually thinking about what is said in posts that you don't agree with. do better.

if they did this they wouldn't be able to sell T6 versions of virtually the same ship.
I always thought we should get a free T5U upgrade for all T5 ships and a 500zen paid upgrade from there to T6 even for event ships but I guess its not to be.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
Remember when everyone wanted a better boff layout for the Gal-X even before the release of the Odyssey? Well we didn't get our wish until they decided to just release the $30 version of it and leaving the original Gal-X as it is.
Bad way to give players what they wanted. I hardly ever saw the original Gal-X, but I see plenty of Yamatos.

There's always an X sucks phase, or an X sucks compared Y.
... All these threads and comments about how T5U is terrible...
Well, is it terrible if you've joined the artificial DPS race? YES, in some cases that is true.
Is T5U completely incapable of enough DPS to do endgame content? NO, many T5U ships can be built and flown to do 20-30k DPS (or more), without spending large amounts of money or time. Contrary to what some of the more juvenile players think, that is more than adequate.
Finally, it all depends on your point of view, the perspective from which you look at a ship:
If you spend most of your time playing Borg STFs and the current non-Borg STF(s)-of-the-moment, then DPS is a concern. It's a concern, up to a point, after which it's all psychological fears of inadequacy tied to power fantasies and the pride and status assumed if you succeed.
If you spend most of your time playing non-STF content, solo, or with friends, it's not imperative to have 50-100k+ DPS. You can get by with 10-15k, even in normal or easy difficulty STFs (which is where the majority of "i just want to play Star Trek" players will get, with some enjoyable gameplaying effort, on their own).

So the OP is asked "why" and can't come up with any sort of strong argument that might compel cryptic to do so other than "I can't get T6 versions of my favorite ships". Makes it easy for Cryptic to not ever consider it.
But let's just think for a minute. What do they release every few weeks? T6 ships that more often than not are "upgrades" of older T5/U ships. What's been coming out in lockboxes? T6 ships. So one would think that eventually they'd get around to doing even more of the T5/U ships right? While everyone has their favorites, how long did it take them to do the BoP despite it being so iconic? i.e. Ships will get upgraded eventually.
And here's another thought. It's S11 and who are we dealing with? What's shown up? Time ships. Tholians. So what might the next lockbox be and contain?
Having said that, it wouldn't surprise me if the Wells never gets upgraded. The Annorax is basically the "upgraded" version of it.
It makes zero business sense for Cryptic to ever offer a way to upgrade a T5/U ship to T6 when they're designing and released T6 ships constantly. I just don't understand how some people can't grasp that.
Just allow us to upgrade ships like we upgrade all gear. I'm 100% serious.
This may require a rework of the ship system but overall it will improve the game and allow everyone to use their favorite ships, end result more fun for everyone.
this could be interesting. I have some mirrors ships that I would like to upgrade. But the cost would be crazy. The cost to upgrade our gears is already exorbitant
You're more likely to get your T6 version of your T5/U Lockbox ships as a new Lockbox ships ala the T6 Jem'Hadar Strike Ship.
